Daughter broke neighbours bike

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:00

Basically as it says. Brand new bike which for some reason she jumped on when walking passed. No idea what she was thinking but it’s snapped something and seems can’t be fixed. I wasn’t aware until this morning when another neighbour mentioned it and gave me recommendations for where to go for a replacement.

Personally if it was me I’d never ask for a replacement and put it down to kids being kids. I have spoke to my daughter but she can’t explain why she did it . It’s totally out of character. AIBU not to buy a new bike?

It's not fit to be stomped on, the parents have to cough up for a replacement. He must have done quite some damage if it can't be fixed.

I agree, but it’s an option to help op out

Delphiniumandlupins · 23/05/2026 20:36

Also, shouldn't be OP's problem, but often second hand bikes are available cheaply on Marketplace because kids do grow out of them quite quickly.

By lying to the retailer?

Auroraloves · 23/05/2026 20:38

You need to pay to repair or for a new bike. And have a chat with your daughter about respecting other people’s property

Sorry just read all your posts. Yes they definitely need to repair or replace.

Hope your child is ok

SundayMay · 23/05/2026 20:48

Sorry this has happened. Your neighbours are being unreasonable to not pay for a replacement! An apology doesn't cut it.

If you don't get anywhere with them replacing it, we rent our sons bike through the bike club, under £10 per month and when he outgrows this one we can replace it for the next size x

Viviennemary · 23/05/2026 20:48

It wasnt accident. Your DD deliberately broke the bike. Sounds like she was jealous. I think you need to make good the damage. If that means paying for a new bike then so be it.

Bluehouse14 · 23/05/2026 20:58

Deleted as a reverse! They should absolutely pay and teach their child accountability

BellaVita · 23/05/2026 21:00

The other parents need to replace your child’s bike. End of.

@Viviennemary @Bluehouse14 It's a reverse

oh my! I didn’t expect such a strong response! got it. It was my child’s bike and that’s the response I got from the parents. Financially we’re struggling and I wondered if that made me over sensitive hence the reverse.

Saltedtoffee · 23/05/2026 21:01

My views are often not those of the masses. But I hand on heart could not not pay and my daughter would be punished accordingly.

Londonrach1 · 23/05/2026 21:05

Of course you replace the bike. It's very strange you saying kids will be kids. Don't minimalist this. Replace the bike and let your dd learn a very important lesson. She needs to work to pay for the bike be it chores, selling toys etc.... yabu

andnowwhatdowedo · 23/05/2026 21:06

A child's bike arguably can't be safe if it breaks so easily. Perhaps you should contact the manufacturer first and say it is not fit for purpose. An 8 year old is not very large or heavy.

cestlavielife · 23/05/2026 20:02

How old is your daughter? Three. Or 13 or 23?
What do you mean by "jumped" on it?

Honestly it doesn’t really matter. Three? Op pays for it because she clearly wasn’t supervising properly. 13? OP pays for it and daughter has pocket money taken away for a while. 23? Well then OP gives her neighbour her daughter’s number to pay for it. Either way the bike needs replaced.

oh just seen it’s a reverse! Yes OP they should absolutely pay for it!

InterestedDad37 · 23/05/2026 21:15

Was the bike made of bread sticks or something?

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 23/05/2026 21:17

Please please tell us how you get on. This has broken my heart, it feels so unjust! I’m sure if your neighbours continue being dicks the mumsnet community will have someone that lives near you that can find him a bike for the summer - I know I have one for example! I’m in Yorkshire

Hankunamatata · 23/05/2026 21:20

Whats actually broke on the bike. Dh has built a few. Unless the actual frame is snapped it can be repaired.

I would take it back to where you broyght it and argue its not fit for purpose.

Can you post a pic of broken part

MrsBatshitRatshit · 23/05/2026 21:22

Who do you think should pay for your daughter's expensive misdemeanours, if not you?

Anononony · 23/05/2026 21:23

I'd be fuming personally, my lads bike isn't new but he raised the money for it himself and uses it for racing, if it was broken, especially by something as unnecessary as it being jumped on (as opposed to letting someone ride it and something happening) he would be devastated and would potentially have to miss club sessions and/or races until it was fixed/replaced.

Replace it/give them the money to take it to a bike shop ASAP. I'd be surprised if it's broken beyond repair, a kid jumping on it couldn't possibly snap the frame and everything else on a bike can be replaced for cheaper than a new bike, a bike shop would know, ask them to get a quote

I'm ready to jump in the car to go and see the neighbour - I'll be taking the tv if they don't pay up!

Teapotparadise81 · 23/05/2026 21:26

If they outright refuse to pay fir a replacement, suggest the other remedy is for their child to give your child their own bike and then their child is the one who can't go out riding due to their child's carelessness.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 23/05/2026 21:26

God I hate a reverse, so tedious. Just post what happened. They absolutely should pay.

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 21:27

Thanks all. I honestly don’t know what’s broke. The front wheel is seized and won’t move when he peddles. When I walk it on back wheel it’s fine so seems it’s front. Wheel looks fine, can’t see anything bent etc.
It was a handy man that looked at it as I don’t think it would be worth paying a proper repairer. The bike was £140 . I’ll check and see what a repair would cost at a bike shop

Op don't accept no... tell the neighbour you expect them to pay to repair or replace it or you will take them to small claims.
