AIBU to think these boys should have been incarcerated?

BBC News - Teenage boys sentenced for raping lone girls
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clypg68e2neo

I've never started an AIBU before, but I'm genuinely really shocked. I'm just not sure how this sentence is justifiable. Their actions were premeditated and deliberate, they were carrying a knife and they filmed themselves. They're obviously a danger to women/girls, and probably to other boys too.

If anyone knows how and why this sentence might have come about, I'd be interested to hear it.

The boys filmed themselves laughing and encouraging each other as they raped girls in separate attacks.

Youth detention has a strong rehabilitation element, as well as providing punishment to the individual and indicating that society finds the acts unacceptable.

Appalling judgement, I hope it's appealed.

And also thinking that the mothers of these boys may not have been crying just with relief - I doubt that they sweet angels at home.

Luckily the criminal justice system doesn’t work on “what I’d do if my daughter was gang raped”

thank god, hey?

You have so little idea of what you are talking about.

Cartmella · 21/05/2026 15:39

You can also email your MP asking them to complain about the lenient sentence.

Agree, disgusting sentences for premeditated, evil attacks that will stay with those girls for the rest of their lives. What incentive is there for victims to come forward?

Absolutely agree. The female CHILDREN have had their lives destroyed by the CRIMINAL acts.
Those boys are criminalised by their own revolting actions.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 21/05/2026 15:40

I cannot believe what I have just read.

I highly suspect those 2 girls will not be the only victims given the description of the crimes, I'm sure there will be more girls who have been too ashamed to come forward, or fear they would be in trouble if they've met up with this sick group without parents knowledge.

I hope the girls happen to come across this thread and see the support for them and enough people complain to overturn this ridiculous sentencing.

I have summarised the strong and brave girls victim impact statements;

The victim impact statements described profound and ongoing trauma experienced by both girls after the assaults.

The 15-year-old victim said the attack had destroyed her sense of safety and badly affected her mental health. In a poem included with her statement, she expressed feelings of despair, emotional numbness, and suicidal thoughts. She described living with fear and the lasting psychological impact of being assaulted while others laughed and filmed it.

The 14-year-old victim said she felt emotionally disconnected after the assault and struggled to trust or relate to people around her. She described feeling numb, withdrawn, and permanently changed by what happened.

Agree, they criminalised themselves when they committed horrifying criminal offences that destroyed the lives of two girls.

Does the PP believe James Bulger's killers shouldn't have been criminalised? How monstrous does a crime have to be then? Does the effect on victims (current and most likely future) not matter?

A lot of mistakes were made in the Bulger case, yes. One of them hasn’t been rehabilitated.

there is a famous comparison to a Swedish 10 year old murderer in the 90s. They wren’t imprisoned, in fact they weren’t prosecuted. They still live in the same community of their victims family. They are considered rehabilitated.

Ohcrap082024 · 21/05/2026 15:04

But judges do sometimes get this wrong. Sentencing guidelines are not always correctly and consistently applied. That’s why we have a system in place to request a sentence review.

I have submitted a review request because I think the judge may have been too lenient in his application of the sentencing guidelines. As is my right as an adult citizen of the UK.

Of course they do, and of course you do.

I didn't say anything which even suggests the contrary.

If you knew me at all, trust me that is the opposite of what I am trying to do!

This is outrageous and disgusting! I have filed out the form , the fact it was actually videotaped makes it far worse too ! I’m in tears for those poor girls, who are children too ( in case the apologist poster forgot!) , how old were the girls? ( not that it makes a difference) it doesn’t seem to have been mentioned.

I have complained, you can do the same, it’s not acceptable

Edited

Thanks. I didn't know you could do this. I have submitted mine too.

Absolutely

These boys are rapists and therefore criminals
They are a danger to others
They are repeat offenders
They should not be allowed to go home

Shame on our justice system
So many judges are lenient on sentencing when it comes to rape
Here’s just two others

Who ‘literally’ got off with murder? This is a story about boys being convicted (ie not getting away with) rape but being sentenced surprisingly leniently.

Okay, I'll admit 'literally' isn't accurate but cases like the one at the link below come to mind. Seven years for murdering someone, and I think manslaughter is often the same thing, is getting off with it. They should be imprisoned for a couple of decades at least.

And yes, the boys may have been convicted, but without a prison sentence what is their real punishment? And what does this sentencing do to deter other boys and men from doing the same? Zero!

You have so little idea of what you are talking about.

Why do you think that? Because I’m not advocating being a vigilante? Because I understand rehabilitation isn’t about what sounds the most vengeful?

Sartre · 21/05/2026 15:48

coulditbeme2323 · 21/05/2026 15:22

Where you live and where you are form are two entirely different things.

Oh here we go, trying to blame black or Asian kids. We also incidentally don’t know whether the girls were white or not. Race doesn’t play a part here, they’re pieces of shit irrespective of ethnicity.

tinyladybird · 21/05/2026 15:48

I don't understand how these judges come to these rulings, people go to prison for less.
I don't think "children" like this should be granted anonymity whatsoever either.

It is entirely possible that you meant no harm, and I do apologise for my remarks, but I did not think your comments were at all helpful.

I'm stepping away from this conversation now before I say something I really will regret.

.The boys, who were aged 13, 14 and 14 at the time of the offences, cannot be named for legal reasons.
During a five-week trial at Southampton Crown Court which resulted in their convictions on 5 March 2026, jurors heard that the victims, aged 14 and 15 at the time, were attacked in separate incidents less than two months apart and were physically overpowered. The girls did not know one another
