AIBU to think these boys should have been incarcerated?

BBC News - Teenage boys sentenced for raping lone girls
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clypg68e2neo

I've never started an AIBU before, but I'm genuinely really shocked. I'm just not sure how this sentence is justifiable. Their actions were premeditated and deliberate, they were carrying a knife and they filmed themselves. They're obviously a danger to women/girls, and probably to other boys too.

If anyone knows how and why this sentence might have come about, I'd be interested to hear it.

Teenage boys sentenced for raping lone girls in Fordingbridge

The boys filmed themselves laughing and encouraging each other as they raped girls in separate attacks.

This is horrifying. Thankyou PPs for sharing the form. I have submitted

Doesn't matter what these boys thought. If you imprison them for the rest of their lives, they sure as hell won't be raping anymore girls. That's all we should care about. They forfeited their right to freedom when they raped this poor girl, and she will have a lifelong sentence anyway, whether or not the boys are locked up.

This.

Given the calibre of some of the MPs and Councillors that get elected, I bloody wouldn't!

There are Scottish Green MSP's who want to abolish prisons.

link to form again for anyone who wants a review of this:

What is your name? - Apply to have an unduly lenient sentence reviewed – GOV.UK

Hi it is asking for names of persons sentenced? I really want to sign this.

Quietisgood · 21/05/2026 18:54

I'm so glad to find a thread on this, as I was so shocked and sickened when I read the news report, I could not believe that more people were not aware of this case, and as outraged as me. Those poor girls have suffered so much already, and now to hear this sentencing, I can't even imagine what they are going through. Women and girls are not safe, and we deserve better protection.

As said before just say names withheld due to reporting restrictions because of the ages of the accused.

Hi it is asking for names of persons sentenced? I really want to sign this.

Just put: Juveniles, rapes at Fordingbridge and later Southampton for the court.

peskyginge · 21/05/2026 18:55

The truth is we don’t have the facilities to rehabilitate this type of young offender. The stats above look good but this type of premeditated rape is not comparable to other types of sexual offending. The whole point is that our YOI should be a place for secure rehabilitation but they aren’t because they are not funded. Just like the YRO will have no real bones to it, no real depth or specialist therapy. Neurodiversity is a red herring and not an excuse for any type of behaviour that is this violent. So much for VAWG, the patriarchy is alive and kicking. I think this is appauling and I also would like to know what support has been provided to the survivors who have to live with this forever.

Sbmpp · 21/05/2026 18:56

Gee, I thought it was worse here in the US. What a nightmare for those two little girls.

Just do what I and others did and states that their names haven’t been released for legal reasons.

Dollymylove · 21/05/2026 18:58

Horrified and disgusted. What planet do these judges live on?
It needs to go back to the court of appeal for unduly lenient sentence

BloominNora · 21/05/2026 18:58

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/05/2026 18:50

Isn't that reoffending within 12 months, though?

Yes - unfortunately not measured more long term for young people

Nihongo · 21/05/2026 18:59

PhaedraTwo · 21/05/2026 18:40

And I guess the animal cruelty and illegal hare and rabbit coursing gets a pass?

It's well recognised that people who have no empathy with animal cruelty tend to have no empathy with human pain and suffering.

Yes, it seems they are no strangers to illegal behaviour.

Anyone who thinks these guys won’t be back in front of the courts in the next few years are deluding themselves.

It is things like this that would lead me to consider taking action myself if this was to ever happen to my daughter. The thought of having to wait years for it to get to court, for a judge to do this 😱
I wonder if he'd have felt differently if it was his wife, daughter, or himself, who had been put through this ordeal. Sickening.

Seriously, if that happened to my daughter, I’d be up for murder…. Ironically, I’d almost certainly get life!

BlueMum16 · 21/05/2026 19:03

I've also submitted the form.

As PP

Name unknown
Court sentence 21/05/26
Court Southampton

I'm disgusted at what message this gives to teenage boys and girls. I'm a mum of both.

Heartbreaking for the victims and their families

BatFeminist · 21/05/2026 19:03

Given the gravity of their crimes they should have had a custodial sentence. When will the justice system step by for women and girls. I have also appealed and contacted MP. I really hope this is looked at again.

fairislecable · 21/05/2026 19:03

I have been happy to sign and send in a sentence review request as it occurs to me that if this sentencing is allowed to stand it may be used as an example in future cases.

As women we need to let the authorities know how, yet again, the feelings and rights of women can be cast aside.

Use your right to request to show the strength of feeling amongst those this will affect - women.

Your silence could be misconstrued as acquiescence.

Pleasealexa · 21/05/2026 19:04

Thanks for the link..mine is submitted.

Let's see the government ministers stand up for women and girls. This case is truly sickening and the police who investigated must feel so undermined. They were obviously close to the details of the crimes and have said it too lenient. I trust their judgement on this...not the judge who seemed to want to soften the sentences.

Yes as he is clearly a danger and if that mentally incapacitated will never be anything else.

I agree, but I'm not even sure how much capacity we have in secure mental units these days, there is a mental health hospital near me that houses the criminals insane (or whatever we can them now) and has a few long term 'patients' with severe autism that aren't safe to be in the community but we seemed to have moved (too far) away from this as a society.

Pigeonpoodle · 21/05/2026 19:06

Monty36 · 21/05/2026 17:16

I was wondering if he was fit for trial. Which is a thing. You can look it up.
There are a series of capacity and competencies they have to look at. Given his level and severity of learning capacity which is considerable I was just wondering how they arrived that he was fit for trial. It is a reasonable thing to wonder.
Clearly they did as he stood trial.
It doesn’t mean I don’t think what they did appalling. It doesn’t mean if he was found unfit for trial that he would be simply let free. He wouldn’t .

If you’re capable of gang rape, and then posting the material online, then you clearly have the mental capacity to be punished accordingly.

I actually find it very disablist to say that someone of low intelligence doesn’t know the difference between basic right and wrong, and wouldn’t be aware that this was an evil thing to do.

PhaedraTwo · 21/05/2026 18:39

No it isn't a fair point. It's a completely irrelevant point.

In your opinion. The reason I don’t find it irrelevant is, the weaponisation of violence against women is something we all should be against, and this is a good example of it.

Look at any SM post by police about women being attacked. The “doctor or engineer” comments, the clamour for “why no description” comments, most recently 3 women tragically died in the sea in Brighton and the vast majority of comments were about small boats, no sympathy whatsoever.

I’m sorry if this weaponisation bores you, but it’s actually a real threat to women.

They can fester in a damp cell for I care. They don’t need special facilities.

OnePeachCrow · 21/05/2026 19:07

The fifteen year old you have to wonder if he was fit for trial. Their learning difficulties / ADHD were assessed as being in the bottom 1% for their age.

I'm sure the victims feel so much better for knowing this.

I'm sorry but these boys need to locked up to protect the public. Hopefully they could be rehabilitated while they are there. Fat chance of that happening while they are home with the families who raised them to behave like this in the first place.

Your point is well, I'm not sure really. I suppose whataboutery really. I see neither you or the other poster have even expressed sympathy for the victims.

I see the actually really quite offensive post you're defending has been deleted. Wasn't me who reported it, but it deserved deletion.
