AIBU to think there are still positive signs in the economy?

There is plenty of money out there still.

Now let me add the caveat that I know there are people that are struggling, but I think there are reasons to be positive about the economy and country.

The shops are busy, the coffee shops are busy, the restaurant's are busy, and there is money being spent.

We fancied an impromptu roast out on Sunday, and I had to call 5 pubs before I could get a reservation.

I still think we are a few more years away to see the property market where it once was, but I do think there are signs to be hopeful.

That's the whole point of your thread no?

Not at all.

To be positive.

Look I am not trying to be chancellor of the exchequer - I have been fully open that my evidence is anecdotal.

Last Bank Holiday weekend we were in London. We tried to stay another night, but the hotel was fully booked, the London shows were sold out, The Lego store was a 20 minute queue and more often than not people were coming out with bags.

My area (Windsor) is lively, the cafes and restaurants are packed.

Tried to book a last minute hotel in Christchurch (just outside Bournemouth) for this weekend and it was fully booked.

Tried to book a hotel for this weekend in Hook (just outside Winchester) and fully booked.

Now people can send links of the GDP - and I am not dismissing that.

I am just giving positive stories of at least 4 areas above.

But that’s not what people are disagreeing with you on.

People are generally agreeing with you that business is good in London and the South East, from where you’ve taken all these examples in your post here.

But people are disagreeing with your suggestion that the economy is positive everywhere, because it’s not. The unemployment rate is at 5% and rising, and lots of people are not only struggling to afford treats but also struggling to afford the basics, even in the cheapest supermarkets.

So your whole argument is not really accurate.

If that is the case, surely we would should be celebrating the areas doing well even more.

All I’m getting from this is that you’re very wealthy. My family couldn’t afford a London/South East hotel staycation twice in one month.

That may very well be true, but plenty of people can and surely that's a good thing?

Nobody is disputing that. We are celebrating economic success when it comes. But it needs to be balanced with reality. It feels very distasteful to talk about how we must celebrate the economic success of already affluent areas when more and more people are genuinely struggling to feed themselves and their families.

I do get that, I just thought it might be good to share positive news about the economy.

Yes, it absolutely is a good thing, but we also need to recognise the needs and situation of the growing majority of people who can’t.

Again, for the sixth or seventh time, what positive news? That rich people can afford to do expensive things?

But you are looking at from one side.

If the shows, shops, hotels are full of "rich people" that is creating catering, cleaning, security, hospitality jobs - and the people working those are likely to need the money.

It's a good thing that wealthy communities have been able to insulate themselves from the hardships experienced by the rest of the country and everyone should celebrate them...while 1 in 7 hospitality businesses go under and many more are cutting staff, at a time when people are so strapped for cash that 16% of adults go without food when they are hungry and youth unemployment is at an 11 year high ?

What kind of celebration are you thinking...cake?

I have never once said I was wealthy.

Don’t worry, when Wes Streeting increases CGT to 40%, even the wealthy will be feeling the pinch.

Everywhere is busy where we are but that’s because we live in one of the most touristy places in the country.
We definitely think twice before eating out now because it’s so expensive & we just can’t justify it. We’re not going abroad this year but when we go on our UK holiday we will eat out & spend money in gift shops etc.
