AIBU to think there are still positive signs in the economy?

There is plenty of money out there still.

Now let me add the caveat that I know there are people that are struggling, but I think there are reasons to be positive about the economy and country.

The shops are busy, the coffee shops are busy, the restaurant's are busy, and there is money being spent.

We fancied an impromptu roast out on Sunday, and I had to call 5 pubs before I could get a reservation.

I still think we are a few more years away to see the property market where it once was, but I do think there are signs to be hopeful.

That's really not the vibe I get.

I don’t understand this. What vibe do you get then? That the eocnomy isn’t in a really bad way and we’re being lied to? Because you’d be wrong. The economy is on its last legs and really suffering.

HarryKanesRightFoot · 21/05/2026 10:26

Busy shops/coffee shops/pubs in an affluent area do not a thriving economy make.

I think the poster was trying to state that the coffee shops were full because people had nothing to do, and I was stating that wasn't the vibe I got.

I live in London. There’s money everywhere. But I travel outside for work - it’s very obvious outside a small area of London and the SE that the country is in trouble

Yes, I understand that. I’m asking what vibe you get. Because I would’ve got the same one as the other poster.

Agree with this completely.

I got the vibe that the people using them were doing well for themselves.

Oh yeah, I put my nose right up to the window when I pass by thriving bubbles to get a glimpse of all these busy cafes and bistros on the train, like a modern day matchstick girl.

I'm sorry, op, you have to be on a wind up?

@Bagsoflifewipedout Oxford and Cambridge are the cheapest universities to attend! They have huge subsidies and the most generous grants! You need to get these young people to wise up a bit! Do the research!

But you aren’t allowed to have a PT job if you’re in college. So it isn’t cheaper if you need to rely on having an income

Haha - but all jokes aside it is good to small business's busy.

Yes, of course, but it’s not a truthful picture of the economy at all. If you read the papers and watch the news, you’ll see that your experience in/near Windsor is entirely different to what’s going on in other places.

As another poster said, London and the South East are a completely different picture compared to the rest of the U.K.

I can’t really understand the point of your thread, to be honest.

Is it a veiled attempt at a pro-Labour thread? If we're discussing the UK economy, surely it's better to focus on the meaningful metrics that enable global benchmarking. I would start with the recent rise in unemployment.

They’re not. I went to Cambridge and it’s an incredibly expensive city. I didn’t qualify for any grants or bursaries, and couldn’t work (as they don’t allow part time jobs, as another poster points out) and I found it very expensive to live there.

Defo not pro Labour!

Yes, but that doesn’t really tell us anything useful. It doesn’t mean the economy is suddenly thriving, because all data points to the fact it is not.

But look at my bustling village <stomps feet> what are you all on about? I have nice coffee shops.

Maybe this is the intro to the next autumn budget?

Based on what? Vibes?! And doing better compared to what? Covid? You haven’t really given any meaningful evidence to back up what you’re saying.

YANBU. The economy is in decent shape. A lot of people don’t want to admit it though because it’s Labour in charge

Probably the fact our growth forecast has recently been upgraded and we grew in the first quarter of the year despite the Iran war?

Giving Rachel plenty of time for 128 U turns, assuming she's still the Chancellor by then.
