With 2 days left to go on my notice period, work colleague I work with being nasty with rude comments, bosses ignoring me I came home and emailed/messaged my boss that I won’t be returning for the last 2 days of my notice period as I want some time before starting my new job next week. She’s seen the message but not replied. AIBU to think she should have?

You can struggle to believe what you like, but we have dedicated legal resource who supports managers in employee matters such as this.

Like I said, well respected, well known company. We have a reputation for being excellent to work for. We have very few problems with employees. Do you think that happens by accident?

Edited

your very well known, well respected and therefore presumably very large company has very few problems with employees?

What does that even mean? You know how many grievances sackings disciplinaries have taken place? I suppose you’re in fact, the CPO of Tesco?*

What demonstrable contribution does your legal team supporting on every employment contract breach make to this?

*they have terrible employer reputation mind

The contribution is that our managers have support ensuring that the people are well managed and where problems could occur, they're handled appropriately.

I've been there a long time, I've seen a lot of things happen, I'm fairly senior and therefore privy to a decent amount of the information.

Believe what you like, but the fact is that legal support for people managers is a very useful thing. And competent managers will seek whatever support is available to them to ensure they're handling any scenario appropriately. Whether there is legal support available to them or not, they should be using what support they do have.

Backedoffhackedoff · 21/05/2026 12:32

managers who can’t make decisions or perform basic processes using their management knowledge- which inability to deal with this situation would well come under- would be incompetent.

you seem to have low expectations of people paid to manage.

No, I'm realistic that you can't expect people to know how to handle every situation and providing support allows people to work to their best.

I'm done explaining this to you now. I can see what style of manager you fall into from your posts and I am glad you don't have responsibility for managing people I care about.

At my work managers can't enter leave or absences via the self service HR tool (we only approve/rescind leave) so I'd need to reach out to HR so that could be updated for payroll purposes. Also there is a full process for IT and building control access that gets kicked off by HR when someone resigns which would need to be updated. So informing HR is the appropriate and required action.

Livpool · 21/05/2026 12:42

You have basically told them to stick the job up their arses so they aren’t going to be wishing you well!

Right but that’s just a system thing. You wouldn’t need to jump into talking to HR about the issue to meet that requirement

PurpleThistle7 · 21/05/2026 12:58

I have no idea what I’d reply to that so no judgement on your ex boss for just leaving it.

Yes true, but I also wouldn't be entering into any discussion about pay with the leaving employee because I wouldn't know if HR/ payroll would be able to stop the pay in time/bother to recoup if too late etc.

I mean, this 🤣

MilkyLeonard · 21/05/2026 13:30

Indeed. It’s a bit like stamping on someone’s toe and then complaining they didn’t admire your new Doc Martens.

Bluedenimdoglover · 21/05/2026 18:32

Sounds like they are as happy to see the back of you as you are to leave. Forget about it. They are history now.

StormGazing · 21/05/2026 18:42

You actually broke your contract by not seeing through your notice period, I’d have just lied and said I had Covid or similar

I’m sure it was very hard to have to work with a colleague being nasty and your boss ignoring you, and I don’t blame you for not wanting to work the last few days. Yes. In an ideal world a reply would be nice but they sound awful. Hope your new job is better. And don’t worry about the other reply’s. Mumsnetters love to pile on someone feeling low.

It does not matter which career or profession you have and no matter how high you are in that profession if you decide to leave it just carries on.
Employers could not give a damn.
I learnt this the hard way that NO One is irreplaceable.

Just to update everyone including the majority who have given not so nice responses to me leaving 2 days early on notice period AFTER I said that Work Colleague I work with was being nasty/bosses were ignoring me, my Boss today messaged me to say they wish me well for the future.

I don’t know why you think it’s important that you did this AFTER falling out with your colleagues.

So your complaint is they didn't respond quickly enough?

Well that's a win then now you can go off into the sunset complete.
Hope it feels the way you wanted it to and life is now complete.
Congrats.
