Booked hairdresser for 2pm for a full head of colour (dark brown/black) and a cut and blow dry. I realised at half 12, she’d emailed me at 11am asking if I could come in any earlier. I emailed back and said earliest I could go in was 1, which she said was fine. I’ve been to her before and she’s always been fine.

Get there and she’s incredibly short with me. Seems pissed off that I didn’t come in earlier and she’s been “waiting around all morning” even though I booked a 2pm appointment. Doesn’t offer a tea or coffee or anything and slaps on the colour. Leaves it for 25 minutes, then starts saying she may not have time now to do a full blow dry as she’s busy but could blast it with the hairdryer. I’m annoyed and sense tension but say fine. She then proceeds as she’s washing it to say actually she may not have time at all, and as I’m only going home after can only towel dry it. We weren’t even at my original appointment time yet.

She then cuts it quickly, just the ends and not my usual layers and when I mention it again she says about time. Things are getting tense and I’m getting tearful. (7 months pregnant too). She then wraps my hair in a paper towel and says that I’m finished and I look at her gone out.

She says sorry needs the chair back for next client. I say fine whatever, get up and leave. Issue is I’ve booked through Fresha and they’ve taken the full amount from my card. I emailed the salon once I’ve got out and processed everything and they’re point blank refusing a refund even though I got barely a cut and absolutely no blow dry.

i won’t be going there again but can/would you request a bank charge back? Paid by debit card and it was £85😭 im so upset, money is tight anyway and this was suppose to be a birthday treat.

Why are you having your hair dyed when you are pregnant?

Because they use products which are perfectly safe to use while pregnant. What a ridiculous question.

Hankunamatata · 21/05/2026 22:44

I would do it without hesitation.

Plus leave loads of reviews

Sam9769 · 21/05/2026 23:14

Why don't you make an appointment to go in and see the manager to discuss this. She may rent and chair and be self employed but the salon and manager can't just wash their hands of this.

TerracottaWorrier · 21/05/2026 23:32

I reported a salon through Fresa once and they forced a pretty instant refund. I was pretty unconfident since it was just an email address rather than a live chat like you might get with Uber, but I sent screenshots and the email was responded to and the issue resolved within an hour.

Get her in trouble with fresa too! They don't want shady characters like her on their app either.

You are not going to get your money back so all you can do is leave a brutally honest review everywhere you can. If I read about your experience I would never use that hairdresser so at least there should be some satisfaction knowing you will cost her business.

Silverbirchleaf · 21/05/2026 19:31

I’m not actually sure that you’re eligible for chargeback. A quick google suggests these are the situations you can claim for and being dissatisfied with a service is not listed. You did have the haircut, just was unhappy with the result.

she did not receive the service she requested

She will
i designed fraud and dispute systems
she has a case that will succeed

That's all extremely weird, OP. If she's usually good and you have a long-ish relationship with her, I would really be questioning if she had something dreadful going on on her personal life. Like, she couldn't take you at 2 because she found out her teenager had to appear in court at 2.30. Or got an urgent callback from a mammogram. Or something.

It seems like there's no recourse for a refund (VERY annoying!) so I think your best best is to talk to her. You could do it via message, so she's not put on the spot.

"Hi Kate! How are you? Hope all's well. I noticed you didn't seem quite like yourself at our planned 2pm the other day, and I wondered if all's well with you? It's not like you to rush through an appointment and not do a blowdry, and only cut my ends. I'm sorry I didn't see your message about coming in at 11 earlier. I'm guessing you had a crisis of some sort which meant you couldn't do 2pm. Anyway, I hope things are OK at your end. Let me know if I can do anything to help. Love, Tidalwaver."

You catch more bees with honey rather than vinegar. If she values your business at all, she'll probably invite you for a blowdry and a more thorough cut.

It does sound as if she had something happen that made her freak out and act in an unusual manner.

And if you get the brush-off after sending that, at least you know to just get another hairdresser!

It might have been if she had actually received a colour, cut or blow-dry however unfortunately the poor OP got none of the above.

Hopefully you've issued a charge back Tidalwaver and you've located a new hairdresser who can fix your hair before baby arrives. Flowers

She did get the colour, but not the blow-dry, and only a glancing cut, which is much less thorough than she usually has.

nevernotmaybe · Yesterday 00:52

You can, after making sure you have taken all the procedures they have for complaining.

Remember this doesn't mean you are owed the money even if you get the money back using chargeback, this is something people often dont understand and think it means they deserved the money.

A civil dispute between you still exists, and they can try and go to court to get the money back etc. You would probably win, they probably wouldn't even bother. Just pointing out it is a possible outcome though.

You are asking mumsnet if you should commit fraud.

no you should not charge back.

being unhappy with what you paid for is not a reason to juat do a charge back.

actually ridiculous

Crushed23 · Yesterday 04:26

I’d book her again directly (not through Fresha) in a few weeks then not show up. If they ask for card details on booking, give old card details / promptly cancel the card after you make the booking.

Yes, I would be that petty.

Namesuggestion101 · Yesterday 04:27

What a cow. Email the manager, get in touch with trading standards and write a thorough review.

Fatnearlyslim · Yesterday 04:37

A few years ago I went to my usual hairdressers, I book in advance
anyway after the colour & cut she said can the junior dry your hair I’m really busy
I said yes
then a lady promptly sat down and said
‘thanks for fitting me in’
i didn’t return to that hairdressers again.

Fraud? Gosh posters on here can be ridiculous at times but to accuse someone of committing fraud is quite a new low. Did you read the thread...

Op please ignore such nonsensical replies.

Did you even read it? She did NOT get what she paid for. She paid for colour, cut, and blowdry, but only received the colour and a slight dusting off the ends. She did NOT get the blowdry or a haircut.

And the colour was given insufficient time to develop!

It’s never been like that before nor has she so I think I was a bit bewildered and confused to start with and things kept changing, one minute it was I’ll blow dry it and then it was, I can’t but will blast quick with the hairdryer and then it was ah I’ll just towel dry it. As soon as I was in the seat she did the quickest cut and then was unhooking my over cover thing and telling me she needed the chair.

I was barely there 40 minutes and 25 of that I’d say was hair developing (not really long enough), 5 minutes of hair washing and then 15 minutes of absolute weirdness. I’m also quite tearful at the moment, tired and it wasn’t really until I suddenly sat in my car with wet hair I thought what the hell just happened?!

Edited

You need to follow up the email and be clear that you did not get what you paid for. Outline the original appointment time. What the appointment was for. What happened. Explain you have not received the service you paid for/ service was not for for service and a refund is due under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Do you have pictures of you with wet hair in a paper towel? If so. Add these.

See what they reply. They either refund, or you have enough papertrail to be successful in a bank charge back.

I would also leave reviews of the salon literally everywhere. Talk about your experience as you have done here. Also talk about the response from the salon owner.

This is not fraud. She has not received the goods or services she paid for and is entitled to a refund under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (before this Sale and Goods Act would also have covered a refund given the circumstances).

Salon and hairdresser are clearly in breach of consumer legislation here. If they will not act, she has additional protections to raise a dispute with her card provider (request a charge back on debit, or S75 for credit card).

Dogmum74 · Yesterday 07:08

Tidalwaver · 20/05/2026 16:08

Got an email back from the salon owner to say that as she rents a chair, it’s at her discretion to refund and on this occasion she won’t. That they don’t handle payments etc and it goes to each person who rents a chair. Such a nightmare.

I would 1) absolutely do a chargeback yes and if that doesn’t work 2) contact the salon owner and say you don’t care if she rents a chair, it is their salon and if a refund is not given it will be the salon getting a bad review. I would then contact the hairdresser herself and say that if she doesn’t assist in the refund then you will be taking her to small claims court to get your money back. Clearly state the reasons why and provide her with the evidence.
There is no way no how I would be letting this go

Ethelspagetti · Yesterday 08:14

It’s good you have this email from the salon as the bank will ask you to forward this, to prove you tried to get a refund. Explain in the charge back form what service you booked for and what you didn’t get. You will get your money back as they didn’t give you the service you paid for.

I had similar with an avant garde hairdressers I used to go to in Spitalfields. A local business owner was going to an event so she was fitted in at the same time to me. I did go back but I was a bit pissed off.
