How did Tyson Fury’s daughter get married at 16?

Wouldcou · 17/05/2026 13:08

I thought they changed the law and you had to be 18 in the UK?

OP posts:
likelysuspect · 17/05/2026 14:14

I thought we were past the stage of saying that harmful family cultures cant be questioned or criticised due to the ethnicity or heritage of the family?

Lifeomars · 17/05/2026 14:15

Did anyone see the photos of Molly Mae's 3 year old daughter Bambi wearing an off the shoulder dress. Am I old-fashioned in thinking this is inapproriate for a little girl? It also occured to me that the bride is only 13 years older than this very young child.

LizzieSiddal · 17/05/2026 14:15

I looked at the wedding photos and felt so sad for her.

I saw an advert for the new Fury family show and the father is telling his 16 year old DD that if she wants to get married she can but she must never get divorced as that isn’t their way!

What a shitty thing to say to your teenage child.

Scarlettjune · 17/05/2026 14:15

SnappyQuoter · 17/05/2026 14:14

I was referring to the OP’s use of “UK.” When she didn’t mean the UK.

Not sure if you’ve noticed but, particularly on mumsnet, English users will constantly say UK when they are talking specially about something English. Even in the scotnet board, they’ll pop up and say “well actually, that’s not how it works in the UK” because to you English lot, it’s only the UK if it’s England. Nothing else matters.

Yes that happens a lot on mumsnet.

Some English people dont seem to know that so many things are different all over the UK.

Age to marry is only one of them.

Age to marry in England is 18
In scotland is 16
Isle of man is 16

Berlinlover · 17/05/2026 14:16

Totally normal in the traveller community along with other things I’d get banned for mentioning.

Scarlettjune · 17/05/2026 14:17

People on here knocking the traveller community. Who says our way of life is better than theirs?

Honestly if I had to choose between going to school + then working all my life,

Or choose the traditional traveller lifestyle which was for women to stay at home while the men work, I definitely would not mind the traveller lifestyle. At 41 i am exhausted from constant work

SnappyQuoter · 17/05/2026 14:17

MandyMotherOfBrian · 17/05/2026 14:11

Weird way to make a point, but yes you’re correct, thankfully the Westminster government acting for both England AND Wales is not backwards enough to still not be protecting children from marriage, in 2026.
Other devolved UK governments seem to have not yet managed to safeguard children, in their jurisdictions, against it though. That is what you meant, right?

And since you think the English and Westminster are oh so much better than the rest of us, how do you feel about England still not making it illegal to hit your children? We’ve made that illegal. You lot still smack, and it’s totally fine in the eyes of the law.

I can honestly say children from any community should get to finish their education and not be married while still school age.

Samysungy · 17/05/2026 14:20

Because the Isle of Man is not part of the UK.

Why?

Should they not have a choice?

Why should anyone be forced to go to school? School is often a horrible, prison like system

I hated school. Especjally because in many classes I just sat there, while the teacher spent the majority of the class trying to get the naughtiest boys to behave. 1 adult to 30 teenagers is a ridiculous system. It definitely wasn't a great atmosphere for learning. I also hated the prison like feel of school. Uniform. Need permission to go to the toilet etc.

Most people are criticising the fact a 16 year old got married.
It doesn’t matter what community, race, age or sex, no 16 year old should be marrying.

JustAnUdea · 17/05/2026 14:22

If the worse was to happen and a Child Bride was widowed, with a young child of their own, how would they support themselves and their child both before 18 and after?

(Not pertinant to this case with family money, but in general)

ThatPeachQuail · 17/05/2026 14:22

I'm from traveller heritage, though my Grandmother left because it was shit and she wanted to marry outside and not marry a relative.

There are numerous things wrong with the culture but I don't think marrying at 16 is necessarily one of the worst, though it is bad.

In this case, it has the best chance of success. She's rich, she won't be held back by the patriarchy in the way that most girls would be. She won't be battered by her husband with nowhere to go because her parents won't allow it because even if they thought it wasn't wrong - they're so dependent on their reputation in the outside world for money, they'll step in.

She won't be living in poverty on a site cleaning a caravan every day or working minimum wage unless she wants to. She'll be leading a very different life to most traveller wives. Just like her Mum is.

Why exactly though? Why is it ok a 18 and not at 16.

The law in the isle of man says 16

Are you really asking why girls should have an education 🤔

In general, benefits presumably

In this case, her dads money I would assume

Yes I am. I am asking why they should have, in a lot of cases, a BAD education.

Many schools are horrendous.

Why should teenagers be forced to go there?

TotalBaloney · 17/05/2026 14:24

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:25

Would you make the same comment sbout an arranged marriage at 16 within the muslim community?

I would, yes.

Smacking should definitely be banned in England. Although saying "You lot still smack" is the equivalent of someone saying Scottish people get married at 16. It's legal but that doesn't mean most people do it.

I learned more outside of school than I did in school.

We are able to learn by ourselves using books, online resources etc

pinkyredrose · 17/05/2026 13:57

16 isn't a child. A minor yes but not a child. You can work full time and pay tax at that age.

Of course it's not a child. I hated turning 16 because I didn't want to be completely grown-up. I'd like to have stayed 14 forever.

Scarlettjune · 17/05/2026 14:27

m1ghtl1ke · 17/05/2026 14:25

Some schools maybe, not many

Teenagers need guidance and education. Limiting your life choices at 16 is not a good idea for anyone, regardless of cultural background, religion or gender

Not the whole of the UK. It's 16 in Scotland.
