I thought they changed the law and you had to be 18 in the UK?

So many of you are so completely wrong about us

Then please explain how leaving school at 11, marrying at 16 and having to base your entire world round your husband is a positive thing for girls and women?

What happens if a girl doesn’t want to follow that path?

Well like a lot of things, we will never really know the truth.

Paris did speak about herself aswell though. Paris works at different things.

Yeah in the same way that Katie Price ‘works’.

She is known because of her husband and even though she’s apparently an author and businesswoman she still says she’s a full time mother.

At 16, people wouldn’t know if the person was a good person. You know fuck all about most things at that age.

This is so true. I've been around a fair few sixteen year olds and obviously they all differ in levels of maturity but in their heads they all feel they know all there is to know about everything and are already fully fledged adults.

It seems somewhat skewed that she is deemed too young to vote for a government that can be changed in four years (or sooner!) but old enough to commit to another person for the rest of her life.

Agree with Lunar. I work with Traveller women and men, 5 days a week, and they place a huge premium on education and self-development, to the point where a big number of ladies did a two-year Leadership course at one of Ireland's top universities, juggling family commitments and work commitments around it. Sad to see negative stereotypes prevailing on this thread - it is quite clear that those people haven't really gotten to know any Travellers.

Honestly leaving school at 11 and then saying 'place a huge premium on education' doesnt equate.

flabbypea · 17/05/2026 20:55

I can’t believe in 2026 people are still banging on about travellers marrying young. Especially when you will never understand our world or culture. Just because you think it’s wrong doesn’t make it wrong. The girl isn’t rich and living off daddy. She’s is married now and it’s her husbands job to provide she won’t see a penny of her fathers money now. She’s also an influencer and makes her own money. She was also home tutored after she left school but didn’t want to sit her GCSEs. Her husband is a lovely young man and lost his own father when he was very young and was brought up by his mother. I can’t believe that grown adults talk and gossip about a young married couple so horribly, it’s not your life and you will never understand it.

It shouldn't be acceptable in the modern world for a school aged girl to be getting married instead of taking her GCSEs.

Yeah, she looks older for sure. Like mid 20s.

100% agree. 16 year olds are still at school. (Well, they should be!)

If they were still living in England she'd certainly still be compulsory school age and her parents would have had to provide her with a full time education.

You don’t agree that it’s wrong, fine. Why do you think it’s right? I’d like to hear some specific reasons, not “culture”.

I'm really sorry that you and your fellow community members have had to endure so much slander and hate on this thread. I came to the realisation long ago that English people are very bitter, we have such a superiority complex about everything but know deep down we are just pathetic little xenophobes who can't stand the fact that our culture is entirely built upon stealing the best things from other civilisations and claiming them for ourselves. For what it's worth I've had such an education about the wonderful traveller community from folks like yourself and will definitely be looking to volunteer and raise awareness for traveller interests. ❤

Explain the positives of getting married at 16?

SomethingFun · 17/05/2026 21:10

The thing is, at 16 who does want to do exams? Who does want to go to school? If you went round all the 16 years olds now in the country knee deep in exam season and gave them a free choice how many would say yes to not doing their GCSEs? They don’t get the choice because they aren’t mature enough to understand the consequences of not doing these things.

Venezuela might have been the human that came up with the cure for cancer or figured out climate change and we will never know because she lacks the formal education required to access higher levels of education. Yeah she can be an influencer but what fucking low expectations when with millionaire parents and private tuition she could have been anything.

Why the hell are you people so fixated on education? Because you have all been brought to believe it’s the be all and end all. We are brought up to provide for ourselves, it’s a team effort boys are taught work and provide girls are taught to bring up a family and keep a home it’s a whole different way of life. Do I agree with non travellers lives nope. School, college, university, job, debt, more debt, kids putting you in a home until you die. Nah don’t agree with it. Is our culture better in the way we do things.. absolutely. Am I right and you’re wrong, nope! It’s just a different way of living I don’t understand your ways and you don’t mine. No one’s right or wrong we just have to respect that there’s differences and move on.

Thank you for your kind words. And I have to agree I do think there’s quite a bit of bitterness and resentfulness about the way we live our lives freely and don’t answer to no one. You’d think over the years people would be used to us getting married young but clearly not lol

Education isn't the be all and end all it's the bare minimum, and it should be every child's right.
Then the girls who don't want to bring up a family and keep a home have options.

Pigeonpoodle · 17/05/2026 21:30

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:15

Are you a traveller? If not then do not comment on other cultural traditions.

By that logic female genital mutilation is ok, and if you’re not from the East African culture it is practiced within, you have no right to say otherwise!

Of all the arguments you could have used, this is a terrible one.

Scarlettjune · 17/05/2026 21:30

I think that Venezuela may also have seen marriage as freedom.

She is the eldest of seven, and on the netfkix show, she is often looking after the other six kids.

I believe you should choose when you want to get married. If that’s 16 or 30 then so be it. I have a daughter 24 that is still at home and I have a daughter that got married at 17, it’s all about when you find the person you want to marry.

So it’s wrong to have a view on traveller culture, but it’s ok to generalise the entire English nation by saying that we’re very bitter. How hypocritical!

Education comes in other forms other than school. Most are home schooled or have tutors come a couple of times a week. I thought you EDUCATED folk would know that. Also you don’t need an education to live and put food on the table. That’s what yous believe because you don’t know how to do anything else. You don’t have the skills we do to provide for our family’s.

What are the benefits of marrying young and why can't you you have that and an education?. When people don't agree with something, it's not always based on envy or misunderstanding, people referencing FGM as its a good example.

Well obviously not because that is illegal. There’s nothing illegal about marrying at 16.
