To think that Lidl are taking the piss?

So under the old system, if you spent £10, you got a bakery treat, £50 free veg etc, plus the scratch cards giving you 15% off of something youve typically bought before

It wasnt good but it was fine

Now, you get 1 point per pound

And one donut costs 40 points

So I need to spend £40 now to get a free donut? Plus no scratchcard rewards?!

Nonsense

I live in a country that doesn't have a Lidl but do spend a couple of months where they do exist.

I can't download the app due to a google issue with regions.

The prices you pay in Lidl are far better than what I pay the other ten months of the year.

I remember when you could get a Ford Escort for 1400 completed books of Green Shield stamps. You don't get that any more.

🤣🤣

mumofoneAloneandwell · 15/05/2026 16:45

I dont 😄 i'm just annoyed at how they're taking the mick

They cant really have been losing money by giving out free veg - i used to buy a nice big bag of potatoes

Just another retailer ripping us off

Every retailer is ripping you off. That’s what happened when corporations decided a 50 percent mark-up was crazy and it should be a 500% mark-up.

Lidl UK makes a pre tax profit of under 1.5%

Most organisations would not consider this a safe margin. Just a slight downturn in business will take them into a loss.

Many companies making profits that low would be closed down.

Lidl is making a lot of profit:

They are a private company, if you don't like their value for money shop elsewhere.

You have an inflated sense of entitlement if you think they are 'taking the piss'

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/05/2026 05:02

IsabellaVireauxLaurent · 15/05/2026 17:40

yep strange it is

They only get to rip you off if you buy from them.

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 06:37

They are not a charity at the end of the day. Their donuts are shite too. All these reward cards are becoming less generous. Brexshit innnit! In Spain last week a coffee and donut sat in a cafe was £3.75. Here it’s double!

Mabiscuit · 15/05/2026 20:07

Their recent email said "You asked, we listened" so it's apparently what we wanted! I'll still shop at Lidl but just not every week now.

If you believe that then you'll believe anything. That's marketing hype if ever I heard it. I've swapped to Aldi now.

fundamentallyauthentic · 17/05/2026 04:05

Lidl is making "a lot of profit" because Lidl has a huge turnover.

Lidl has a percentage profit of under 1.5%, which is very small. A tiny downturn in their business would send them into a loss.

Market share growth is not "making a lot of profit" in the sense that they can give it away to customers, it just means they have opened more shops.

Did we seriously have the OP saying up thread that it doesn't cost them any money to give away vegetables?

Does she want farmers paid, or not?

I see you haven’t mentioned again the amount of profits.

I never said they could give profits to customers. No business would do that. But they are making a lot of profit and doing well in general. They are choosing to put some of that profit in new branches. The rest? Huge dividends and bonuses, banking what’s left. A tiny downturn means closing some branches or (more likely) reducing headcount at head office, it wouldn’t be a big deal for them so no idea why you bothered to mention it.

I have mentioned the amount of profits in two posts, you just refuse to accept the answer.

And I see now that you object to the difference between Lidl's 1.3% and Tesco's 4.5% being used to build new Lidl stores in areas that currently don't have access to one.

Don't tell me, you're a hard left socialist and you think all food stores should be nationalised so nobody makes a profit?

TheKeatingFive · 17/05/2026 07:56

shop somewhere else if you don't like it 🤷‍♀️

Cindefuckingrella · 17/05/2026 08:05

I think they will lose a lot of business to Aldi and maybe have a rethink. The Aldis in my area are far superior- the only thing Lidl wins on is their bakery - our local Aldis don’t have them.
I will now shop guilt free at Aldi knowing that I’m not missing out on anything much from lldl’s reward scheme!

Yokodoko · 17/05/2026 09:37

Either that or prices go up even more 🤔

HughJackmansLeftFoot · 17/05/2026 09:48

mumofoneAloneandwell · 15/05/2026 21:35

I remember lidl being known for paying well above minimum wage as well, back in the good old days

Wonder what they pay now 🤔

My daughter’s a deputy manager at Lidl, they do still get their 10% staff discount which goes up to 20% if you spend over a certain amount. They do pay above minimum wage, but you earn it! I do miss the free veg items like they did last year or year before. Look out for the too good to go fruit n veg boxes they’re a right bargain at £1.50 though some stores are better than others for these!

MarchingOnTogether · 17/05/2026 13:14

I dont think lidl is even that cheap anymore!! My sister swears by it but I spend way more if I shop there (especially if we go down the middle.aisle lol).
Instead I shop online and im always getting vouchers sent. At the moment im bouncing between morrisons and asda, asda regularly sends me £10 off £60, morrisons is usually £12 off £70.
I also had a 20 off 60 from ocado the other week and sainsburys keep sending me £12 off 120 which i havent been using as ive had better from the others to use.
Even before the change the lidl rewards werw quite rubbish and they rarely send me a decent money off voucher, once in a blue moon i get £5 off so we will pop in for a few bits.

Lidl is still cheaper on a typical shop, what more do you want ?🙄

It really is. I've even compared it to Aldi and it's cheaper. I got a large ready to eat avocada + any bakery item for free at Lidl yesterday. Plus, they have a great range of foreign foods. I love Lidl.

It really isn't.

Aldi wins the independent Which analysis of which is the cheapest supermarket for a typical family shop year after year.

croydon15 · 17/05/2026 21:44

I love Lidl the bakery is great and half price to M&S or Waitrose.

Best description of Lidl I've read recently.

"Lidl is for people who want to shop in Waitrose or M&S and can't afford it."

Everanewbie · 18/05/2026 08:36

I can appreciate that them removing an offer that you have enjoyed will be annoying. But they are certainly not taking the piss. At the end of the day, it is a free market with lots of choice, and you can vote with your feet if you think you can find better value elsewhere. They are a business, and businesses can, and do vary offers and pricing as part of their profit/marketing strategies, and these offers are to entice customers, they're not indefinite obligations.

Rickang88 · 19/05/2026 13:38

Been lidl Longton branch today, in the offers they are ripping you off at the tills. When you see offers reduced and being charged with no offer isn't very nice, I feel ripped off though it only £2.25 extra i was charged at the till, but didn't notice until I got home and checked my receipt, this is not the first time this has happened it also happens at the Bentilee branch too.

Naunet · 19/05/2026 14:09

Selkie33 · 15/05/2026 16:48

All supermarkets have been severely impacted by this CoL crisis, they're having to tighten their belts too, just not in the same way as the rest of us @mumofoneAloneandwell 😉🤣

I was watching a video yesterday of how someone found their tesco shop was £50 more expensive, for the exact same stuff, than it was 7 weeks ago.

Supermarkets are helping to create the cost of living crisis, they're cashing in. Just look at their profits.
