To think that Lidl are taking the piss?

So under the old system, if you spent £10, you got a bakery treat, £50 free veg etc, plus the scratch cards giving you 15% off of something youve typically bought before

It wasnt good but it was fine

Now, you get 1 point per pound

And one donut costs 40 points

So I need to spend £40 now to get a free donut? Plus no scratchcard rewards?!

Nonsense

The most annoying thing is that under the new Lidl Points Plus scheme you now don't get the 10% off your next shop if you spent £250 (within a month). I always used that 10% to do my biggest shop! Now it costs the same as Morrisons to do a big shop so may as well shop there as there's more choice.

What slightly irks me is that Lidl have done a big ad campaign with Liberty X to position this as a great boost for new and existing Lidl customers whereas in fact it's significantly worse than the old scheme.

Be thankful you don’t shop at Asda. You have to spend £40k to get enough points for a tin of soup.

The Asda Rewards scheme used to be amazing!! They changed it about 12-18 months ago I think.

I used to be able to save quite a lot of points/money for Christmas. It’s hard to get anything back from it now.

It’s quite liberating though - I shop around more now whereas I would have just gone straight to Asda before so 🤷‍♀️

Electricsausages · 15/05/2026 17:55

Yeah, the Asda rewards are worse
although I complained that my amount hadn’t gone up in about six weeks of shopping and I got £3 added to it
still crap though

These retailers make about 4% profit.

If you spend £10. and they give you something that costs them 40p then they've made no money on your shop.

Would you rather they put the prices up than changed the loyalty scheme?

@Imdunfer it doesn't cost them 40p though, does it?

e.g
For the financial year ending February 2025 (reported in April 2025), Tesco reported an adjusted operating profit margin of 4.5%.

The retailer reported a total adjusted operating profit of £3.128 billion, marking a 10.6% increase in profits year-on-year.

Throwing their customers crumbs would hardly impact them, shareholders may be rather disgruntled though.

Oh yes, it's terrible now.
I used to get 50p or £1 added almost every time I shopped (typically spending £20) and now nothing for months!

Boxcan · 15/05/2026 18:03

Shop somewhere else?

It's all paid for somewhere And they're cheaper than anywhere else without any offers.

Personally I wasn't a big fan of the freebies because it meant I "bought" and ate sweet treats I would have otherwise left on the shelf.

itsalltoplayfor · 15/05/2026 18:03

M&S Sparks has done something similar - changed the offers so you have to spend, accumulate points to get the rewards. Not that I'm shopping there much but occasionally the upfront offer of e.g. 20% off jeans made me look at what they had. It's a totally different way of promoting customer loyalty/interest.
Lidl have offered me a free cleaning item so I'll be swinging by to see what's the most expensive cleaning product I can get!

lazyarse123 · 15/05/2026 18:05

I found Morrisons more card is better but they do a thing where you choose 10 out of about 15 offers every month. Spend say £4 and get so many points, it was very good but I haven't had any for 3, months so I complained and the chap just said they choose who gets offers. Well I know that's bollocks so I've screenshot the offer thing and complained that I'm not happy at being fobbed off. Just waiting to hear. I still use it to get cheaper prices but not happy.

I said IF and used 40p to make the sums easy for people to understand.

There's no big food retailer in this country making excessive profits. If you don't like their prices, shop elsewhere.

19lottie82 · 15/05/2026 18:06

The scratch card rewards were shite anyway…… 15% off something that costs 89p, that you would never buy!

SapphireSeptember · 15/05/2026 18:06

Hicupping · 15/05/2026 17:45

I avoid my Lidl now, there's never a staffed till open, it's all self serve and after a day working I've no interest in doing what was someone elses job, the self serves are so loud too, beep can prob be heard miles away. Asda and Aldi at least has some staffed tills open. The offers were never enough to pull me in, though I think Harry Hippo's > Percy pigs and >>>>that Aldi's sad version.

I didn't know they did hippo sweets! I still miss Sainsbury's Eric (the elephant) and friends sweets (Eric was strawberry and there was a cola flavoured monkey and orange flavoured lion.)

imaravenGRONKGRONK · 15/05/2026 18:08

Yeah, it’s shit. I posted on another thread about this. It just means we’ll spend less there as it’s not longer worth the drive when we could get Tesco or Asda or Morrison’s to deliver (and there’s much more choice from them, especially in free from).

Yep I picked my free antibacterial surface cleaner up today 😝

You whattttt??!!

I thought they were keeping the scratchcard? I used to get some amazing freebies from it. And yes, I can still buy them but it's nice to feel valued and get something for nothing sometimes.

Also the coupons didn't seem as good this week so I wonder if they are watering them down too.

rolloverbeethoven · 15/05/2026 18:16

Well yes we can all afford a doughnut if we want one, but that's spectacularly missing the point. It used to be nice getting a free cake after spending a tenner, doing a scratch card or my favourite the spin the wheel for a random treat. Fun - remember that?

InstantlyBella · 15/05/2026 18:18

I wouldn't be caught dead inside a Lidl so them fleecing their customers is of no concern to me. If you can afford the transition, M&S food is of substantially higher quality.

WimbyAce · 15/05/2026 18:19

RaraRachael · 15/05/2026 17:23

I thought I was getting free veg today so bought a bag of potatoes. At the checkout I got some money off but they weren't free so no idea what went wrong.

Was it capped? I made that mistake with a melon once. Think it was capped at 1kg free.

Sartre · 15/05/2026 18:19

To be fair, the donuts are like 40p so...

WimbyAce · 15/05/2026 18:20

I think they will still do the scratchcards and spin to win etc. It is just the monthly reward targets that has changed.

BunnyLake · 15/05/2026 18:20

I used to like how at the Co-op you could build up actual cash with the Members card. Now you’re lucky if you get a slight discount off one random item. I was gutted when they scrapped that.

CurdinHenry · 15/05/2026 18:21

How are they "ripping you off"? Do you think you are owed free doughnuts?

Lidl is unbelievably good value.

Yeah I have had no Morrisons offers at all for 2 months at least. I only got the Easter treat thing.

RNApolymerase · 15/05/2026 18:21

I'm inclined not to bother scanning the code any more. It's a trade-off, isn't it - they get your data and lots of information about what you are buying, in return for some discounts. If the discounts aren't worth it, I shall not bother trying to find the right angle to scan the QR code at.

justasking111 · 15/05/2026 18:22

DH has done all the shopping for the last year because of my health issues. He's now going to ASDA, Tesco and Iceland for bargains. I did wonder why.

tulippa · 15/05/2026 18:22

I've just had a look at mine and I can claim a free cucumber or hummus 🙂. There were some welcome points sitting there that I hadn't claimed so that helped. There are too many loyalty schemes to keep up with now. I find Asda Rewards a bit rubbish. I don't think I shop there often enough so there's never anything I can claim back.
