To think that Lidl are taking the piss?

So under the old system, if you spent £10, you got a bakery treat, £50 free veg etc, plus the scratch cards giving you 15% off of something youve typically bought before

It wasnt good but it was fine

Now, you get 1 point per pound

And one donut costs 40 points

So I need to spend £40 now to get a free donut? Plus no scratchcard rewards?!

Nonsense

It was always pretty crap data collection vehicle. I don’t bother with it though I do shop at Lidl a lot.

I wouldn't be caught dead inside a Lidl so them fleecing their customers is of no concern to me. If you can afford the transition, M&S food is of substantially higher quality.

How do you know if you've never been in one?.

I actually don't think it is. The Lidl own brand stuff is very good quality, much better than the core supermarkets, on a par with M&S and better than Waitrose IMO.

They've changed their pricing structure, as has everyone else due to inflation, they've just done it by changing their rewards system rather than directly increasing prices. They're still better value than anyone else. (Except Aldi)

I said IF and used 40p to make the sums easy for people to understand.

There's no big food retailer in this country making excessive profits. If you don't like their prices, shop elsewhere.

Yerdunfer hen 😉

If you are bothered about data farming Mumsnet is a pretty rum place to hang out

mumofoneAloneandwell · 15/05/2026 16:45

I dont 😄 i'm just annoyed at how they're taking the mick

They cant really have been losing money by giving out free veg - i used to buy a nice big bag of potatoes

Just another retailer ripping us off

Yes I don't like the changes, I always got a free bag of potatoes nearly each week!, sweet treat, bar of chocolate, bag of prunes or dried apricots a lettuce ,ive had loads of free stuff. Now it's crap

C152 · 15/05/2026 18:41

I just read an article elsewhere that said Lidl was the only supermarket in that country that didn't offer a loyalty card; they just offered cheaper prices. Yet people stuck with the supermarkets that were 20% more expensive because they got a 1% loyalty rebate on food that was overpriced to begin with. The thought that you might be missing out on something is an odd mind fuck.

If Lidl is cheaper, shop there. If it isn't, don't. Personally, I don't think any loyalty cards are worth it any more, as they've reduced the benefits to such a degree that they're basically worthless, in exchange for an extraordinary amount of data, which they make money on by selling on to other organisations.

Gotta love this sort of totally pointless contribution to a thread😅

The new Lidl scheme sounds like what we’ve had in NI for some time. I didn’t realise it was different elsewhere!

Mingou · 15/05/2026 18:48

Weird. I'm in Ireland and get the points AND the scratch cards for random free pastries/discounts AND other coupons.
Lidl.is great

Starsaff · 15/05/2026 18:49

All the reward cards and schemes are rubbish now.

likelysuspect · 15/05/2026 18:53

I actually think all these loyalty card schemes are a scam for big companies and when Lidl brought theirs in I was a bit disappointed. I dont think that they or Aldi should get involved in mirroring the big stores with that, they're a discount super market, the main big 4 do the loyalty schemes because they're overpriced and con people into thinking they're getting a bargain. I thought the whole point of Lidl and Aldi was that they simply dont mess about. The price is the price is the price.

I thought I was getting free veg today so bought a bag of potatoes. At the checkout I got some money off but they weren't free so no idea what went wrong.

Did you buy any other veg? It'll be cheapest veg free, you can check your receipt on the app

I think I've been getting better deals. Got my free veg last weekend and free cleaning item today...premium dishwasher tablets £4+...Thank you Lidl!
Neither freebie was based on spend either

bigboykitty · 15/05/2026 18:57

I think they've misjudged this. I'm revolting 😘

Missed opportunity - Lidl are taking the piddle! 😂

Peony1985 · 15/05/2026 19:02

I shop in Aldi because it DOESN’T have any gimmicks.

Snd M&S does cheap basics like eggs and butter really well.

I can’t afford £3 for a bag of fresh salad that’s 89p in Aldi/Lildl. Fresh unprocessed stuff is going to be very similar especially as it’s all grown on the same farms.

kittensinthekitchen · 15/05/2026 19:12

mumofoneAloneandwell · 15/05/2026 16:46

It is, its just irritating at how much theyre making whilst most struggle to balance the books on essentials

You do know they're a business, not a charity, right?

They aren't ripping you off.

They were giving you a freebie for £x spend.

That freebie is now given at a higher spend.

The freebie was always free to you. Not something you paid for

How is that ripping you off?

There is a big up uproar about it on reddit

I don't shop much in lidl but did enjoy the £10 bakery reward

I avoid my Lidl now, there's never a staffed till open, it's all self serve and after a day working I've no interest in doing what was someone elses job, the self serves are so loud too, beep can prob be heard miles away. Asda and Aldi at least has some staffed tills open. The offers were never enough to pull me in, though I think Harry Hippo's > Percy pigs and >>>>that Aldi's sad version.

in mine there's also rarely a staffed till open so you have to do self service with 2 assistants watching you and then you have to scan your receipt to get out the bloody place....i prefer aldi

Yellow2024 · 15/05/2026 19:27

I recently moved to tesco after shopping at Lidl for a year and have collected quite a few points which ive changed into ask italian vouchers which I was really pleased with but the biggest thing was that my shopping is actually cheaper at tesco! I really did think Lidl was cheaper but apparently not for what I buy.
I did love the 10% off and my free massive bag of potato's at lidl though 😂
Im just pleased boots haven't changed their loyalty card, ive got £60 on it so far this year.

zanahoria · 15/05/2026 19:28

ReightYorkshire · 15/05/2026 16:59

I remember when you could get a Ford Escort for 1400 completed books of Green Shield stamps. You don't get that any more.

It took me ages to collect them and days sticking them in

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/05/2026 19:31

This explains the latest Aldi billboards then! All saying that you dont need an "app thingy".

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 15/05/2026 19:31

I prefer the new system. With the old one I used to struggle to spend £250 a month so the 10% (if I reached it) used to save me about £2.50 max. I'm sure it was great for people doing huge shops once a month but it was rubbish for me. Now I can slowly build up points to get £5 off.

The only thing I'll miss is the free bottle of sauce.

FoldThreePiece · 15/05/2026 19:47

Selkie33 · 15/05/2026 16:48

All supermarkets have been severely impacted by this CoL crisis, they're having to tighten their belts too, just not in the same way as the rest of us @mumofoneAloneandwell 😉🤣

They will make their millions in profit as per usual.
Lidl and Aldi are no longer a cheaper option.
Nor do they sell the nice German style desserts of old, large frozen fruit tarts and the like, although they do a nice open frozen apple tart. But it’s tiny compared to what it once was.

Holdonforsummer · 15/05/2026 19:57

There are other threads about the Lidl change in points. It’s going to cost me about an extra £20 a month I reckon. But when I mentioned it to the staff in my local Lidl, they were sad as it affected them too as employees. They used to use the extra 10% off too. I just wish Lidl had been more honest about the reasons they needed to make this change: are they struggling?

Holdonforsummer · 15/05/2026 19:59

And a quick google threw this up: Based on recent data from early 2026, Lidl is not struggling in the UK; rather, it is experiencing significant growth and high sales momentum, making it the fastest-growing brick-and-mortar supermarket. So why have they done this?
