To think Andy Burnham will not make Labour any more electable.

I think there is little appetite for a new PM and a new Labour leader will make 0 difference to their chances of winning. I also think the best the public can hope for, from any government, is a slow, well managed decline. I don't think there is much of a future in the UK and the public need to accept the social contract is no more. .

I think he’s popular for a reason and could turn it around

Thank you so much for explaining the voting system to me as though I am a child I know exactly how it works.

Perhaps you should also explain it to all the political parties and tell them that campaigning during a GE is pointless because people only vote for their local MP and so have no interest in their manifestos for the country or who the leader of any political party is?

Perhaps they haven't realised and it would save them an awful lot of
time and money

Not at all! I’m glad it helped. I used to not understand politics, so I know how tricky it can be. Let me know if any other questions.

Please let Andy Burnham know before he wastes his time trying to get elected. Thanks.

Btw, are you my exH? There's something about your condescending manner that is horribly familiar.

Anyway, whatever you say or think you are still being governed by the Labour party. A fact that probably really annoys you but pleases me because I voted for them.

Thefastandthecurious5 · 16/05/2026 15:50

@cloudtreecarpet I entirely disagree that general election campaigning is pointless. It’s actually crucial in persuading voters to vote a certain way.

The campaigning can help voters hear about all of the good things their local MP has done or about policies a certain party has. Voters may then decide to vote for their local MP because they agree with the things that person has done or because they agree with the policies of the party represented by that MP. So it can be very helpful!!

I didn’t intend to be condescending at all! I was trying to be really clear. I’m pleased my explanation has cut through to you.

What makes you think I’m not a Labour voter?

Sartre · 16/05/2026 16:06

Well, Streeting has fucked himself over today calling for the UK to return to the EU, what an idiot.

I was being sarcastic?
Wow, seriously?

I don't care how you voted tbh.

I missed your sarcasm. I’m ND. Also think you’re being quite rude.

I found your post patronising because I completely understand how the political system works but obviously people vote for the party they want at a GE even though they actually vote for their local MP.
Just as you missed my sarcasm I missed you apparently genuine attempt to educate me.
That's the danger of posting on forums I suppose. 🤷‍♂️

Viviennemary · 16/05/2026 16:23

Even if people don't technically vote for the PM in the general election it's a big consideration. I wouldn't vote for an Angela Rayner led government. Or any other leftie they want to put forward. I think Andy Burnham is meant to be left wing. If so it's a car crash.

Why are you posting on MN if you’re a man?

GenialHarrietGrouty · 16/05/2026 16:24

There's no prohibition on men joining MN.

Actually you were rude when you posted the "lol" at the end of your first post telling me I didn't vote for Keir Starmer!

Thefastandthecurious5 · 16/05/2026 16:23

Sorry about that.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 16/05/2026 16:37

@Sartre He’s right. It’s directly opposing Farage and a recognition of the huge error we made. Farage conned people and is doing it again on many policy matters. It’s basically manipulating the voters who don’t understand economics.

Sartre · 16/05/2026 16:06

Possibly not. I'm glad at least he has put his head above and admitted this would be in UK's best interest long term. If he can clearly set out the reasoning and how this will improve our living standards all well and good.

cloudtreecarpet · 16/05/2026 16:41

Thefastandthecurious5 · 16/05/2026 16:32

You used an emoji of a man at the end of your post?

Um, haven't got my glasses on so...
Anyway, whatever but your initial "lol" was definitely patronising and then that followed up with what seemed to be a similarly patronising explanation of the voting system is what got me thinking that you were, in fact, the one being rude.

No shit Sherlock, you think I didn't work that out?
Pretty low to do that though, don't you think? Pretend you are ND when you aren't?
Nice.

Not really. It’s quite satisfying seeing you get all riled up.
