How much would you guess I earn?

I took redundancy from a very corporate job a few years ago. Very respectable job title with a big company.

I decided to have a go at home dog boarding. So I look after dogs in my home for people who don’t like kennels. I also do a bit of doggie day care. It’s all just in my house.

It obviously doesn’t carry the same respect that my corporate job did! You don’t need any qualifications.

If you had to guess, what would you think I earn a month?

@Dogladyloveswine How many dogs do you have at the same time to generate 4K a month? Obviously asking for a friend 😂

Joolsin · 13/05/2026 00:13

Wow, that's amazing, op. Well done for getting out of the rat race (sincerely, I'm not being sarcastic!) and finding something that gives you such a fantastic work-life balance. I almost wish I actually like dogs so I could do similar!!!!

Caterina99 · 13/05/2026 00:14

Good for you OP!

How long did it take you to build up to your current level and how many dogs do you have at a time?

It’s not the job for me, but I can see people pay a lot of money for their dogs. And getting reliable care for them can be really hard

House doesn’t smell really! I keep it clean. I make £4000 a month usually, but summer peaks at £5000. I think that’s pretty good given that I have no boss! I am done waking them by 9am. Then I don’t have to do anything till their afternoon feed at 3pm. I’m free to sit in the garden and chill. I love it!

Great! I loathe dogs, too many everywhere since COVID and everyone who has dogs think their house doesn’t smell just because they’re used to it.

askmenow · 13/05/2026 00:38

£60k p/ annum.

askmenow · 13/05/2026 00:42

Soz just skipped thru the OP and made a guess.

Vets are as expensive as they are because kind Brits will not see their cherished pets do without and spend what’s needed. So likely to also to spend on doggy daycare.

GrandmasCat · 13/05/2026 00:42

An arm and a leg if you house sit more than 3 dogs.

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 13/05/2026 00:51

I would love to do this. Sadly dcat2 doesn’t like strange dogs in the house otherwise I’d be tempted.

Ryanstartedthefire2 · 13/05/2026 00:56

900 pcm

itwasyourshowallalong · 13/05/2026 01:01

Fucking hell, that’s enough to make me want to like dogs enough to spend large chunks of time with them!

Don't you play with them?

Flatandhappy · 13/05/2026 01:25

Good on you! What a great way to make a decent living totally dictated by you, not anyone else. Lots of jealous folk on here.

Fatiguedwithlife · 13/05/2026 01:34

Good for you OP.
i really don’t understand the snotty responses here? It’s like you’re directly taking money off them! So what if you’re boasting, it is boast worthy and you love it.
I don’t particularly love dogs so couldn’t do it but it sounds perfect for dog lovers

Jasminealive · 13/05/2026 00:00

Eh. You said

Of course I can go out! My licence stipulates that I can leave them alone for 4 hours. I go to the shops. I go to the pub. I’m not chained to any conglomerate. I’m my own boss.

So are you in the pub, or stuck in the house? You’ve said both?

If you’re happy, why do you also feel in competition with me over what I earn?! I love my job too! What was the point of this thread? To boast?

Eh. No, she said she doesn't leave daycare dogs ever.

She leaves dogs which are boarding.

bornwithhorns · 13/05/2026 01:42

I would love this job 0P , mine are reactive so not something I could do currently but adore dogs so would love it !
you’re worth your weight in gold ! when it comes to time away , knowing that your dog is with someone who is going to care for them and make them feel welcome and happy is priceless

Aloealoealoe45 · 13/05/2026 01:46

Good for you OP but I think you’re underplaying how much work it is looking after other people’s dogs - from someone who also works in this industry.

Bookloveruk · 13/05/2026 01:55

£75k

Starbright102 · 13/05/2026 02:01

Thats great. Do you need a van? Could I do this as a side hassle? Do you do walks or just boarding?

Catsandcwtches · 13/05/2026 02:17

Happy for you. There must be a lot of cleaning up poop? Do the different dogs always get on together or do you need to break up fights sometimes?

Totally agree.

Well done for escaping the rat race. 😎

Interesting isn't it?
I think some people gain a lot of satisfaction from corporate type jobs and the status it gives them without realising if they take risks, they can earn a lot more for doing a lot less. Very well done.

pinck · 13/05/2026 02:50

I also dog sit, but very part-time and only take up to two dogs at a time. I usually make somewhere between $800 and $2k a month, but if you do it full-time and take multiple dogs at once, it can easily turn into $7k+ a month.

timeserved · 13/05/2026 03:04

Sounds great. If this is an AMA I would like to know:
How many dogs you accept at one time, whether you brush them and what if your guests don't get along?

Good on you. That is so awesome and you are right many would not even consider the true value of that job. Hope it keeps up for you.
