I took redundancy from a very corporate job a few years ago. Very respectable job title with a big company.

I decided to have a go at home dog boarding. So I look after dogs in my home for people who don’t like kennels. I also do a bit of doggie day care. It’s all just in my house.

It obviously doesn’t carry the same respect that my corporate job did! You don’t need any qualifications.

If you had to guess, what would you think I earn a month?

Can we have an answer, I’m about to go to bed.

I reckon £40 per day x 6 dogs is about £60k?

I love my dog but if I turned my house into a boarding home, I don't think there'd be enough Zoflora in the world.

Do you have to purchase the food though? Is there a big difference between gross and net earnings?

IPM Yup. As much as we love ‘em, they smell.

House doesn’t smell really! I keep it clean. I make £4000 a month usually, but summer peaks at £5000. I think that’s pretty good given that I have no boss! I am done waking them by 9am. Then I don’t have to do anything till their afternoon feed at 3pm. I’m free to sit in the garden and chill. I love it!

One of my customers recently suggested I worked for small change. Got me thinking how people probably under estimate what some menial jobs can earn.

Good for you OP, im probably going to be made redundant over the next 12 months but you have given me hope! Do you need any training? Or certification? I have 2 myself so i would hope that helps

You sound jealous! Why would the dogs be random? I love them all.

All you need is a licence from your council and insurance. That’s it!

The last few messages are a real display of the variety in peoples perspectives. Some are genuinely delighted for the op, some take inspiration from it, whilst others are mocking and see the op as boastful. Funny how we see things so differently.

But it isn't a mental job is it?

Cleaning toilets, collecting refuse, and similar are menial jobs. Generally poorly paid and done by people who don't have any other options.

Perhaps being a kennel maid might be in the menial jobs category but your job as you describe it is not menial.

It will definitely smell, but you’ll be nose blind to it!

Jealous? of earning very little (after tax) and having to sit around my own house all day, unable to go and about - and with other people's dogs there? Um no.

You think £5k a month is very little for working 3 hours a day? (It takes me 3 hours to walk and feed them twice a day). Okaaay. If you worked 3 hours a day what would you earn?

But you’re not working 3 hours a day if you’re not free to go out and about and live your life are you? I presume you can’t leave the dogs on their own? So you’re working all day.

I work 7 hours a day for a touch under £90k, so about £40k for 3 hours. But you don’t work 3 hours!

Where do you keep them in your home? If you have several dogs that are from different owners, are they in their crates when you are in bed? Genuinely interested.

I have a small cottage with a lot of outside space so I don't think I'd ever be able to do anything like this if I lost my current job, although it would be a dream.

Of course I can go out! My licence stipulates that I can leave them alone for 4 hours. I go to the shops. I go to the pub. I’m not chained to any conglomerate. I’m my own boss.
