How much would you guess I earn?

I took redundancy from a very corporate job a few years ago. Very respectable job title with a big company.

I decided to have a go at home dog boarding. So I look after dogs in my home for people who don’t like kennels. I also do a bit of doggie day care. It’s all just in my house.

It obviously doesn’t carry the same respect that my corporate job did! You don’t need any qualifications.

If you had to guess, what would you think I earn a month?

Is that for cash?:)

stayathomegardener · 12/05/2026 23:21

I see you and raise you £4k a month for a pretty much hands off dog field, it’s a huge industry.

We used to offer boarding in addition but I found it pretty stressful, dogs are just so sad the first few days without their owners no matter how much attention you give them and then there’s a high risk you send the dog back coddled.

We just look after DD’s dog now and going away tomorrow, I already know she’s going to fret poor thing.

Of course I can go out! My licence stipulates that I can leave them alone for 4 hours. I go to the shops. I go to the pub. I’m not chained to any conglomerate. I’m my own boss.

I actually hadn’t considered dogs in care being left alone actually.

Surely the point of doggy daycare is that they’re not?

Dogladyloveswine · 12/05/2026 23:24

jasminealive. So I really earn more than you and have zero stress. Tomorrow morning I will give the dogs breakfast and walk them, then I’ll get a coffee and sit in the garden with my feet up watching the boats bob by. 🤷‍♀️

I think it's great and good on you! I'd do the same but I think my cat would find it an issue :-)

Shelaydownunderthetable · 12/05/2026 23:27

God, there are some miserable people on this thread. Good on you OP! We are eternally grateful for our dog boarder. Sounds similar to you perhaps. Nothing menial about it - she gives us the gift of being able to relax and have a break ourselves. Thanks for the insight. I’d be happy to know our dog boarder was earning similarly! She deserves it.

TedMosbysWife · 12/05/2026 23:28

My dream job 🥺
can I ask how long it took you to get to that point of earning around 4k?

Fibrous · 12/05/2026 23:29

This is useful info. I was thinking of offering this service but specifically for sighthounds because I love them all. I’ll have to wait until my cat dies first, though.

How often do you walk them?

TheGoodOnesAreAllGone · 12/05/2026 23:31

£60k p/a

UncharteredWaters · 12/05/2026 23:33

Given what my pal has just told me the cat sitter costs to visit her cats…I’d guess a fortune!!

Sorry, I'm so clueless about this stuff- how many dogs are you minding?

Bigcat25 · 12/05/2026 23:35

That sounds amazing op! Do you have a large fenced in yard?

No we never leave daycare dogs alone. I’m there 100%. The only time we might pop out is if all the dogs at home were boarding.

How many dogs can you have boarding & what do you charge?

How many do you do 'daycare' for? & what do you charge?

it's something I've been considering. I wasn't sure about giving up my job, but I've had a health issue that has forced me to, so I need a new direction.

mjf981 · 12/05/2026 23:40

How many dogs do you board on an average day or week?
Also how many do you have for daycare?

ReadingSoManyThreads · 12/05/2026 23:44

How much do you charge for daycare? How much do you charge for boarding?

Glad you've got something that you love and that pays very well!

A friend cat sits in London. She gets £100 per night. For one cat. She then visits and feeds 2 other cats and gets £60 per cat per visit. She’s earning mad money!!

What? Is this true?

I earn £80 a night for looking after elderly people.

Random321 · 12/05/2026 23:50

Fair play - I think it's brilliant.

I think there's a huge misconception that you need qualifications to earn decent money.

Really interesting thread OP! Ignore the haters…

How did you get customers? Listings via council and so on?

Eh. You said

Of course I can go out! My licence stipulates that I can leave them alone for 4 hours. I go to the shops. I go to the pub. I’m not chained to any conglomerate. I’m my own boss.

So are you in the pub, or stuck in the house? You’ve said both?

If you’re happy, why do you also feel in competition with me over what I earn?! I love my job too! What was the point of this thread? To boast?

shuggles · 13/05/2026 00:05

Jasminealive · 12/05/2026 23:14

But you’re not working 3 hours a day if you’re not free to go out and about and live your life are you? I presume you can’t leave the dogs on their own? So you’re working all day.

I work 7 hours a day for a touch under £90k, so about £40k for 3 hours. But you don’t work 3 hours!

Edited

Personally, I'm shocked that someone on an extremely high salary thinks that having to be in a house all day is classified as "work."
