I’ve just seen that the Hantavirus is in Liverpool?! They’ve been brought to Liverpool? I’ve got a 2 day work conference there and now I’m worried 😢 I suffer terribly with health anxiety. AIBU?

I’ve not seen what type of transport they’ll be using though? It’s very blazayyyy

But it doesn't concern you. Stop focussing on the very few posts that feed into your unreasonable fears.

If people are being expected/asked to quarantine at home, the powers that be are hardly going to say "right, off you go to get the bus back to wherever it may be", are they?

No theyre being taken home. THEN theyre left to do.as they please

Also for.all.thw mocking 'dont lick.a rat' comments i would say THIS strain of Hantavirus does spread reasonably easily. The outbreak in Argentina in 2018 showed that. 1 person who was infected literally passed the index case in the toilet at the party. Now obviously the OPs fear about catching it in Liverpool is mad but the potential for spread is absolutely there once they have been left at home tomorrow and 'asked' to.isolate. they are NOT being forced. And does nobody else see the parallels with 2020? A government distracted by nonsense - then it was Brexit means Brext, now its Starmer fighting for his job. The UK is AGAIN being the outlier (along with the US, yay!) In how this is being handled. Also the junior health secretary just quit (an ex surgeon, so understands actual health as well as politics) and Wes Streeting the health secretary is meeting Starmer today. Is he going to quit too? If so who's taking charge and WHY? Does nobody want ro be the next Matt Hancock?

I’m here and I don’t feel any better. It feels so close on the map. 11 miles away from me.

Think about it. If you had to walk 11 miles say, to go shopping, would that feel close?

Remember they are also in close quarantine, i.e. not able to move outside the accommodation they're placed in.

Oh and no before anyone accuses me of it im not 'salivating' for lockdown. I want to avoid it. Thats why I want the small number of people who are potentially infectious now to be quarantined rather than the potential for a massive problem later.

If I had to go up north Hantavirus would be the least of my worries.

Please stay down South.

lljkk · 13/05/2026 07:55

Health anxiety makes people very unhappy no matter what is going on in reality. There's urgent health problem in OP's story but it's not to do with an isolation unit in Liverpool.

GenialHarrietGrouty · 13/05/2026 07:59

Focacciaisyum · 13/05/2026 06:22

Im not sure why everyone is so relaxed here really. Frankly the OP has a point. No, she is no more likely to be coming into contact with them in Liverpol than anywhere else BUT they are being sent home tomorrow and asked to stay indoors for 6 weeks. Thats it. As far as I can tell there is no legal requirement for them to do so. No civid style £10k fine. Just 1 phonecall a day which as most people dont have a landlines will be to their mobile probably and they can answer anywhere.
So the only protection to the country AGAINST the potential for future lockdowns is just trusting these guys to do as theyre asked for 6 WHOLE WEEKS. No popping to the shops for some bread, no I'll just go for a quick coffee since I feel fine and its been 3 weeks etc.
I dont feel reassured at all to be honest
But OP you wont see them.on ymtheir way home. They're not allowed to use public transport to GET home. After that, there's nothing to stop them though.

Where do you get your understanding from? Mine is that they will have to have trackers on mobile phones and may be checked up on by an in-person visit at any time of the day or night. Steps will be taken to get shopping etc delivered to them, which is another opportunity to check them.

In any case these are, in the main, elderly people who have been away from home for much longer than they planned, don't need to go out to work, and simply want to relax in their own familiar surroundings. We have no reason to believe they will be anything other than cautious and completely law-abiding.

So why, after getting home for the first time in several weeks after the cruise from hell, would they immediately leap on a train back to Liverpool?

And gatecrash a conference?

sittingonabeach · 13/05/2026 08:08

If you have been stuck on a boat for a long time wouldn’t you want to walk about on dry land and not be cooped up like you were in the boat. I’m assuming most people who leave a normal cruise don’t then stay inside for weeks on end (even if retired and elderly)

If I had been on that boat and been told to isolate. I would because I'm not an arsehole.

Well thats great. But it's for 6 weeks. A lot of people.wouldnt. especially if they 'feel fine' and people are MOST contagious in the prodromal phase (so.when they might just have a headache and wouldnt necessarily realise it was related)

sittingonabeach · 13/05/2026 08:31

@RampantIvy I would too but I was responding more to posters’ comments along the lines of when the elderly get off a cruise why would they want to get out and about

Lins77 · 13/05/2026 08:35

Basically I don't think we know precisely how these people will be monitored at home. Standard infection control procedures would involve daily check ins and symptom reporting. If more details have been published, I haven't seen them. But this will be down to public health.

However, there is no likelihood whatsoever that they will be wandering around Liverpool city centre.

Well exactly why would them being elderly make.them.more compliant than anyone else? Thats a nonsense

Edited

All that will be available, but I have read that they are legally not required to self-isolate once released from their 72-hour quarantine and assessment.

They'll be asked to isolate for 45 days.

No.

Read the post by the PP who has experience of being in an isolation quarantine for swine flu

Her family were not allowed home. They will be monitored with multiple calls during the day and night, told they face prosecution if they break isolation . Any medical attention will come to their house rather than them travel.

Yes.

Read the gov. statement:

"All British passengers and crew on board the MV Hondius will be asked to isolate for up to 45 days upon returning to the UK. UKHSA will closely support and monitor these individuals, with testing as required. "

UKHSA update on the hantavirus cruise ship outbreak - GOV.UK

Voluntary UK isolation: Evacuated Britons will be asked, but not legally required, to isolate at home for 42–45 days after hospital monitoring.

Global policy contrasts: France, Spain and others have imposed mandatory quarantines in secure facilities for returning passengers.

"British passengers on the cruise ship struck by hantavirus will not be legally required to self-isolate when released from hospital in the next few days, it has emerged.
The 20 passengers who returned to the UK on Sunday after being evacuated from the MV Hondius are being asked to isolate for six weeks, but this will be “voluntary” rather than mandated by law, say health chiefs.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has a legal power to enforce quarantine and it is understood that UK public health officials have been debating for days whether they should activate this power under the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984, the same legislation used during the Covid-19 pandemic."

This.

A lot of posters are being incredibly naive to think isolation will be adhered to or closely monitored. They will be free to leave the house and have visitors as no one will police it. We’ve literally been here 7 years ago. Luckily it doesn’t look like the contagion is in the same bracket as covid but it’s still concerning and to try to act like you know how this will pan out and minimise the risk of infection, transmission and mutation is both naive and dangerous.

No. You're wrong actually. They are being ASKED they are not legally required to follow that orders its not the same as 2009.

Contagion not the same but fatality much higher. Up to 50%.

HarriaHen · 13/05/2026 09:01

None of those asked to isolate, none of them will do so fully for 45 days, no chance.
