To think Keir Starmer might resign tomorrow (Monday)

I think he might. But who knows. He must know he can't possibly stay until the next General Election. It's very disrespectful to the electorate to not listen.

No he won't. No matter how much many might want him to. He is committed to his job.

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/05/2026 22:06

Not tomorrow, he’s making his big speech about his hopes and feelings. But could be by the end of the week.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 10/05/2026 22:06

No 😄

Hes doing an alright job, its just his party coming for him

Focussingonme · 10/05/2026 22:06

They were sweeping downing street earlier today which usually means and address is imminent.... Id like to think so but I can see reform getting in which would be horrific. Lesser of two evils currently. No suitable alternative competition.

ACynicalDad · 10/05/2026 22:09

I think he's too arrogant to go with grace. He doesn't get it. Gordon Brown and Harriet Harman should have told him to go not to join him.

HRTQueen · 10/05/2026 22:09

What step down from his responsibilities

Dedicated PM’s do not walk away just because they are not popular

Pearlstillsinging · 10/05/2026 22:11

Of course he won't. He has said that he is staying. There won't be enough Labour MPs prepared to sign whatshernames' (Catherine West) letter, because there isn't anyone ready to stand in a Leadership election.

ilovesooty · 10/05/2026 22:11

I doubt it, despite some people breathlessly waiting for him to do so.

Not to listen to what? 22 months or so ago the electorate gave him a job for 5 years. This week we had elections in about a third of English councils, and about 75% of those eligible didn’t vote at all.

punkhairbrush · 10/05/2026 22:13

What does anyone think will happen if we get a new PM? Seriously!

PoachedSmoke · 10/05/2026 22:13

Of course he won't. He's a stubborn, arrogant flip flop of a man.

Or - alternatively to doing the job that he was voted in for?

Aweekoffwork · 10/05/2026 22:15

Another idiot will take his place such as our friend, Angela

EasternStandard · 10/05/2026 22:15

I doubt he’d resign but he might be ousted.

RunningforSam · 10/05/2026 22:16

why should he? He was voted in for a term so he has a mandate to lead for the full term. There are mechanisms others can follow if they want to oust him. I don’t get why people think he should resign.

I didn’t vote for him and I don’t think he is doing a good job - but he has every right to stay until he is booted out.

Fluffyhoglets · 10/05/2026 22:17

It would be very disrespectful of him to go now - seeing as he was voted in to stay for 3 more years and the country needs stability - to avoid a ref government which would be a disaster similar to Truss.
People were voting last week for who should run their council and the fact that they've voted in a bunch of people who have not got a clue how to run their council is their own look out. Just a shame the rest of us will suffer along with them.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 10/05/2026 22:17

I suppose he might resign. But if he does it won’t actually be a resignation. It will be a strategic reset to allow him to go further and faster…to the benches at the back. Then from force of habit he’ll try to sack someone.

TeaPot496 · 10/05/2026 22:17

Don't be so childish.

Even if she does garner the support, it will be for nothing other than to stand her to take one for the team so Starmer can see her off, claim renewed authority, and carry on until the time is right to hand over the baton.

The Mandleson scandal didn't force a resignation (although it would have in any previous era where being PM came with an expectation of competence and honesty), so I can't see him falling on his sword over a local election in which a third of the seats were in play. They've been in decline in Scotland for decades, so although it's a new low it's bang on trend, and their luck was bound to run out in Wales in a similar fashion, it's just taken Wales 20 years longer to realise what Scotland has.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/05/2026 22:19

He's not going anywhere soon.

Bananachews · 10/05/2026 22:19

The only way that man will leave is if they do a vote of no confidence. I don’t understand the in and outs of politics so I’m not sure if he could even refuse after that point as well. He won’t leave without a fight. He’s a lawyer, they don’t quit unfortunately.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 10/05/2026 22:21

I hope not! I don't see anyone reasonably better to take his place!

This.

The quality of the public is so atrocious all anyone can do, regardless of party, is rearrange the deckchairs on the Titanic.

Dreading the future tbh

Edited

How can you be both stubborn and flip flop?
This is media driven nonsense.

TomatoSandwiches · 10/05/2026 22:23

I'll eat my hat if he does, I doubt he's going anywhere soon.
