AIBU to wonder which button people would press to survive?

Everyone on earth takes a private vote by pressing a red or blue button.

If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives.

If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

Red or blue
Red- aibu
Blue-ainbu

Everyone should press red. Then everybody is guaranteed to survive, and they know that from the moment they press the button.
No one would have any incentive to not do it, so you aren’t hoping that enough people press blue that you all survive.

MyWildOliveGoose · 09/05/2026 19:14

Surely it would make more sense for everyone to press the red button. I would be.

Merryoldgoat · 09/05/2026 19:15

Why wouldn’t you press red?

Eskarina1 · 09/05/2026 19:16

Unless you could game it as above and convince everyone to press red, I'd press blue. I have to live with myself and I couldn't if I did that. I also don't want to live in a world made just of red button pushers.

whattheysay · 09/05/2026 19:20

I’d press red. Well, I would actually press blue so that everyone would survive but I would bet that not enough people would press blue so I would press red

Sober23 · 09/05/2026 19:21

What a ridiculous question 🙄

Boxingshibes · 09/05/2026 19:22

Sorry forgot to post my vote.
Id like to think I'd press blue. But I don't know.

ultracynic · 09/05/2026 19:27

My initial thought was blue, because of course I’d want everyone to survive, and the red button people are probably more mercenary and not who I’d want to survive with…

… but, reds survive regardless, so it’d be stupid to press blue, no?

icepop2 · 09/05/2026 19:27

Red because that way I survive. I can't predict other people's behaviour, I can only do what's best for me - and I assume everyone else would do the same.

TheGirlWhoLived · 09/05/2026 19:29

The only option here is to press red. This is the new TikTok trend that my kids were telling me about. For self preservation you press red, and you tell everyone around you to do the same. Why oh why would anyone press blue when we could all save ourselves?

PandaCwtch · 09/05/2026 19:31

Red. There's no incentive not to. If everyone presses red, everyone lives. You can't trust other people to collectively press blue. Blue pushers are the only ones who stand to lose anything at all.

NormasArse · 09/05/2026 19:32

I suppose it’s assuming that not everyone in the world has access to the button. So a village of indigenous people in a far flung land could only survive if people pressed blue?

Although reading it again, it does say ‘everyone on earth…’.

Agix · 09/05/2026 19:32

Red, and hope everyone else's presses red too. You'd have to be pretty dumb to press blue... There's no reason to press blue when everyone can just press red and still survive.

FruAashild · 09/05/2026 19:33

It's a stupid question, if everyone presses red, everyone survives, there's no downside. The only people who die are the blue pointless virtue signallers. But the question is designed to confuse because of the structure of the question which reminds you of questions where there's a choice between everyone getting something or one person getting everything.

Butterme · 09/05/2026 19:34

I voted blue as I’m not afraid of dying but couldn’t cope with surviving whilst so many others died.

However, reading other replies, everyone should just press Red so I’d change my mind and tell everyone that I’m pressing Red and everyone should do the same.

user1471453601 · 09/05/2026 19:34

I think it's quite an interesting question (unlike the poster earlier who thought the question ridiculous).

I think I'd press blue for two reasons. Firstly because I'd want everyone to survive and as I'm just an ordinary person who thinks people, by and large, want to do the right thing, like i do, blue seems the better choice.

And secondly, if I pressed red and a percentage of the population died I'd feel so bad I'd probably kill myself anyway.

dontmalbeconme · 09/05/2026 19:34

No brainer. If you press red you're guaranteed to survive, if you press blue it's a gamble. You have to be utterly stupid to press blue and gamble with your existence. I think everyone would and should press red, unless they're actively commiting suicide. Anyone too stupid to work this out won't be a great loss to society.

SharpPoet · 09/05/2026 19:36

Why are we being asked? What is the context behind the question?

The first statement is 'Everyone on earth takes a private vote by pressing a red or blue button.' You don't need to worry about the 'indigenous people' living on an island.

As you can see, I edited my comment- before you posted actually!

Like others why would anyone press blue? Everyone lives if you all press red so what is the incentive to press blue???

And a third reason I'd press blue is I'm sure I would not want to live in a world populated by people who has pressed red. People who had the potential to kill others. Not a world of be prepared to live in.

Id like to think I'd press blue. But I don't know.

It's an IF THEN statement.

If everybody hits red, there's nobody who pressed blue to die.

If you decide to hit blue, you condemn yourself and similar people to death.

However, as people don't understand logic or programming, there will always be people who hit blue. So the only logical thing to do is hit red and let natural selection take its course.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 09/05/2026 20:07

It depends. If it’s only adults pressing the buttons I’d probably press red. If it’s literally everyone including children pressing them I’d press blue. I wouldn’t be able to control which button my children pressed and I’d want to give them the best possible chance even if it meant that I wouldn’t survive.

You put your own oxygen mask on first.

You don't faff around trying to find Julie from accounts before leaving a burning building.
