AIBU to plan a 90s-style birthday party with traditional party food?

Is a 90s style birthday party really that bad of a idea?
ds will be turning 7 soon and we have plans for his birthday but he still wants to play with some of his friends etc.
So I thought we would host a mini party at the house for 20
Party would include
party games pass the parcel, duck duck goose etc.
Party food ( which has caused the biggest fuss)
sandwiches (ham, chesse, egg mayo)
cocktail sausages
mini sausage rolls
mini pizzas
party rings
faiy cakes
animal biscuits
onion rings
chesse puffs
salt and vinegar sticks
juice in a cup with straw
Basically junk food but very 90s kids party.
Would you let your kid come?

Just to add mn ai suggested the title

@Onetimeonly2026 they've complained about the food have they?

One of my friends had this. Only one parent though. Their DD was only allowed to eat super healthy food. And had a limit on fruit, I think. Can't remember what happened.

I'm a bit confused why the parents know the menu in advance?

I don’t see anywhere the op has indicated this which might explain your confusion?! She hasn’t actually said why the parents are causing a fuss.

i think it sounds like a great party and I’d like to come please! With a request for finger rolls (my mum used to call these bridge rolls?), some with ham, some with egg mayo please.

We had our dcs first couple of parties at home before it all got a bit manic and easier to book something elsewhere, much more fun in some ways than having it out of the house although a lot more work obviously!

Totally agree, I think it sounds great. Just can't fathom why parents would be complaining about a party menu in advance. Surely the kids just turn up. My kids are older, maybe things have changed

PatsFishTank · 08/05/2026 21:10

Isn't this just a standard kids party? It's very similar to what mine had (food and activities) ten/fifteen years ago.

How do the parents know what the food is in advance?

Onetimeonly2026 · 08/05/2026 21:11

So people are aware of the menu as they wanted to know what a 90s kids party would be like etc
For context kids party's round here are very planned and full of healthy food so the only sweet thing would be the actual birthday cake. The food also tends to be homemade.
The fact I have made the party menu full of sugar and frozen food( pizza etc) has made some parents concerned that feeding such will harm their kids and make them a bit hyper. As little child's name aren't used of such foods.

These children are 7 yes? Not 7 months?

I'm honestly wondering where on earth you live that this isn't completely normal party food? What healthy food do they all eat?

You can change the title. AI only suggests it if you press the button anyway.

The food sounds standard where I am. Are you good at corralling children? I always do traditional party games and get many compliments on them but I'm a teacher which I think helps massively. My kids have never been to a party with more than one party game, usually pass the parcel, and I honestly think many parents would struggle to get the children to take part.

So I still need to ask ndn but we also plan on a bouncy castle for the garden. I've already brought some cheap outdoor toys from Asda as well. There will be prizes with the games so hopefully that might encourage the kids the join :)

This is basically a list of normal kids party food. I’d add some skips myself. And jelly and ice cream. The jelly should be in a rabbit shape.

Gowlett · 08/05/2026 21:21

Sounds like normal kids party food to me.

Gowlett · 08/05/2026 21:24

But, having read what the parties are usually like round your way, I wouldn’t bother. The kids will be happy, 90s theme or not. Not worth upsetting the other parents.

OhBuggerandArse · 08/05/2026 21:24

I would add fairy sandwiches, otherwise have at it!

BarbiesDreamHome · 08/05/2026 21:30

It's only 90s style party if you do your pass the parcel without a prize in every layer, not everyone gets a turn and you don't let the birthday child win.

You also need musical chairs for the obligatory scrap and tears.

@Onetimeonly2026 well it’s about time these 7 year olds find out what a party is supposed to be like!

They are going to love it. And it will be the best party they have ever been to!

AgnesMcDoo · 08/05/2026 21:34

We did those parties in last decade

not sure why this is 90s style

Where do you live that this isn’t standard party food?

And I stand by my comment that these parents are being really rude. If they don’t want their child attending, because god forbid they have a slice of pizza, then politely decline the invitation. Don’t complain to the host that their food isn’t up to scratch.

For gods sake it’s a party and if they’re that concerned don’t come!

mindutopia · 08/05/2026 22:11

Is this not just a kids party? This is literally every child’s party at home I’ve ever been to. Not exactly all that retro.

I think you have an odd social circle. Are you somewhere really instagramy new money in Cheshire or something? 😂

selondon28 · 08/05/2026 22:21

This is why I love mumsnet. You’ve described what is a totally normal party in vast swathes of the country as if it’s revolutionary, applied some rather try-hard branding to it (sorry!) and managed to cause consternation among whatever bizarre sub-section of parents you live along. I love these insights into the different worlds we all live in. It sounds like a great party, hope you manage to go ahead with it, the kids will love it and they might all start asking for one.

Sorry, I missed the bit early on where op says it was about the food 😂

but yes, it’s basically the kind of food soft play places used to offer when mine were small if you booked a party package.
Obviously it’s not what you’d feed your kids every day but that’s kind of the point, it’s a PARTY and it’s EXCITING. Those parents really need to unclench.
And when I was a parent of small children I never bought things like squash or fizzy drinks for home, made sure they ate oily fish, they didn’t eat or know of the existence of McDonald’s until they were about 8 blah blah blah. And I certainly wouldn’t have batted an eyelid about this kind of party precisely because as part of a balanced diet it’s all absolutely bloody fine and kids enjoy it!!

Endoadnowarrior · 08/05/2026 22:30

Surely this is just the timeless classic "at home" kid's birthday party rather than specifically a 90s themed party?

My kids both had these sort of parties up to the age of about 9,.throughout the 2010s!

Why would anyone have an issue with this
Unless they've got the wrong idea and think youre gonna be handing out Es, whistles and glow sticks whilst the kids play musical chairs to happy hardcore 🤣🤣
(Although glow sticks- the sort you can fastem together to make bracelets/glasses etc would be a good party bag addition, if you want cheap tat! No judgement meant - theyre fun and kids love them!) ally

And how rude are parents to make a fuss about it? CFs! What sort of parties do they do for their precious offspring?

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 08/05/2026 22:31

Are you doing a cheese and pineapple hedgehog?

I'd maybe have sausage rolls or cocktail sausages but not both

Don't forget pin the tail on the donkey!

cariadlet · 09/05/2026 02:09

As many others have said; I don't understand why you're calling it a 90s theme.
It's standard children's party food. It's what I remember from my childhood way before that and it's what was served at the parties my dd went to way after that.

Maybe the moaning parents are worried that their dc will start demanding proper party food once they find out what children usually get to eat at a party.

Expecting a similar response, for my son's birthday I just made sure there were a few healthy options, knowing full well that the kids would avoid them and dart towards the party food...

But it made the parents feel happier, and if they want to battle with their child over salad vs pizza then fine...

CypressGrove · 09/05/2026 02:56

You are missing frog in the ponds, fairy bread and honey joys. Other than that it sound fine. Stick some carrott sticks and mini cucumbers out for the crunchy parents.
