... not to understand the loathing of Keir Starmer?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/05/2026 18:59

So many people who haven't voted Labour, whether they used to or not, say they haven't voted Labour in yesterday's elections because of Keir Starmer. Is that shorthand for 'the current state of the Labour Party' or is it genuinely a real dislike of the man himself? He seems very bland and inoffensive to me, and in some ways is doing an OK job - e.g. in keeping us out of Trump's war without rupturing relations with the US. Maybe his blandness is the problem. Can anyone explain why people have this reaction to Starmer?

I've met him. Twice, in 2014 (just before he became an MP). I'm not a fan.

Winederlust · 08/05/2026 20:36

I strongly disagree. 12 people who, if they so wish, can choose not to convict someone despite finding them to have actually broken the law.
12 people who all have a different interpretation of 'beyond reasonable doubt' or 'satisfied that they are sure', mostly incorrect interpretations.
12 people who do not have to provide any explanation whatsoever for their decision. That in likelihood range from 'she shouldn't have worn that' to 'but think about his reputation'.
At least if a judge has to explain his bias or illogical reasoning and can therefore be challenged. Not sure what input the govt has here either other than perhaps sentencing, but that's not a jury's job anyway.

But anyway, bringing it back to this thread, the move away from jurys has been in train since before labour came back to power so even if you don't agree it can hardly be blamed on starmer.

Edited

This argument that the Tories started it so it can hardly be blamed on Labour is odd. The same was said of the Chagos deal.

I thought Labour promised change from the failure of the Tories. So why are they enacting policies started under the Tories, particularly the ones that don’t make sense?

I agree. It’s really, really weird.

He’s been disappointing but has done nothing to explain the sheer loathing some people have for him.

So you think its ok that people are going to work yet struggling to pay basic bills and put food on the table.
You are obviously not struggling to get through daily life like others.

the80sweregreat · 08/05/2026 20:51

Yep, a good lawyer , but a round peg in a square hole with being an MP/ leader.

Actually It's from my workplace, adjusted by me. But even if it was does it matter, does it make the points any less relevant. Why the sneering?

And that’s solely Keir Starmer’s fault?

Oh come on struggling to pay bills was caused by Brexit and the Tory austerity drive with the “we’re all in it together” push.

How on earth you can blame a party who has been for such a short amount of time is ridiculous.

Su1rlie · 08/05/2026 21:06

Dbank · 08/05/2026 20:48

I loath KS because he and RR squandered the opportunity to fix the economy by pursuing naive socialist policies on a capitalist economy.

They made the mistake of thinking people wanted Labour, they didn't they just wanted anything but the tories.

His reaction that it's the electorates fault that they "aren't seeing the benefits" is delusional. I hope he stays long enough to completely destroy the party.

No you’re delusional thinking you can fix Brexit and 14 years of Tories in two years!

Goldenbear · 08/05/2026 21:07

cardibach · 08/05/2026 19:17

I really am perplexed by people thinking he shouldn’t be PM because his voice annoys them. Politics isn’t a game show or a film.
He’s a decent bloke. Too cautious for me,I’d like him to go for real change with that massive majority but I think maybe he’s aware that a lot of the votes were anti Tory not pro Labour so he’s avoiding being too radical. A mistake in my view.

I agree, politics shouldn't be filtered through a lens of entertainment, it is a distraction from the complexity of the issues that 'actually' should be the main focus.

Maybe not a fix, but least heading in the right direction, as promised in the manifesto. And judging by today's result I don't think I'm alone....

ginislife · 08/05/2026 21:08

I don’t care if he’s a nice man. He’s a liar and a hypocrite. But then aren’t most of them ?

InterestQ · 08/05/2026 21:09

MathsMum3 · 08/05/2026 19:16

I don't understand this either. He was previously a human rights lawyer, so clearly cares about the rights of individuals, discrimination, civil liberties etc. He seems to be squeaky clean in terms of marriage and family, and while possibly a bit bland, he's a thoroughly nice guy. He can only be doing that job because he's interested and caring, unlike many recent PM's.

Seems to be. Everyone should read the wording around descriptions of his family life in some articles very carefully.

I have no objection to him personally but he is generically a politician who is a hypocrite and I’d rather he finished the term he was elected for as I think anyone else in Labour will be worse.

The next GE can decide the next PM, not the seething loons that can’t agree on anything even their own coups.

Su1rlie · 08/05/2026 21:09

Yellowshirt · 08/05/2026 20:46

I'm not talking about food. I'm saying the amount of taxes the country collects should mean we don't have massive debts and massive interest payments on the debts.

Yes all countries have and need debt but uncontrolled spending and wasting money whilst allowing others to avoid paying taxes is ridiculous. Labour just don't have a plan to fix the country.

Oooooo what is Reform’s grand plan?

So, so excited, they’re going to fix the shit of Brexit they lied about and 14 years of Tory austerity. Who knew Nige has got all the answers!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 08/05/2026 21:11

Not everything the Cons did was wrong and we are a poorer nation than we were. Of course we cannot give more and more govt money to everyone. We aren’t earning it. No one honestly tells everyone this. It’s just a list of wants and Labour didn’t get everything right in the previous 13 years either!

Goldenbear · 08/05/2026 21:07

That’s not why people dislike him though.

Su1rlie · 08/05/2026 21:14

It beggars belief that people
are whining about being hard up and think the parties that caused it are going to fix it for them!!!

You're just going to get more!

Kay00 · 08/05/2026 21:16

I also think Kier Srarmer is alright, and I think the Labour party have done an ok job so far given the circumstances too.

They obviously tried to drive for bigger changes and make 'difficult decisions' but when it came to it they were put under pressure to I turn.

Essentially, the press is run by the right wing mostly, and ANY left leaning leader would struggle against the constant negative news stories. I think he's managing to keep his head down and crack of with the job despite the bad press, but the downside is that the party haven't been successful in celebrating their wins in the media.

The man hates this country.

He is on the record saying that all immigration laws are racist.

His bff, Lord Hermer, who has appointed as the attorney general l, was a known ambulance chaser actively going after Afghan and Iraq veterans trying to prosecute them. Until the whole thing turned out to be a scam against British forces for compo.

Starmer throws people under the bus to save his skin, over and over and over again.

He lies when he’s found to have broken then rules. Mandelson anyone.

He says that anyone questioning uncontrolled immigration is a far right racist.

He thinks women can have a penis.

Need I go on.

These are some of my issues - the army one particularly disturbed me to be honest.

He seems to actually hate the country

Then we get into the Chagos Islands

For his staff, they admitted they didn't really understand the hospitality sector and how the changing rates would affect them

he welcomed Alaa Abd El Fattah with so much excitement, that he felt the need to post on X on Boxing Day

He didn't seem to give two hoots about attacks on Jewish people until Golders Green

he wants to introduce digital ID without explaining what the benefits might be

Wasn't concerned about farmers affected by the inheritance tax on what is after all a business

Initially rejected calls for a grooming gang inquiry

Talks about smashing the gangs when in reality I'm not sure he even understands what's going on

I can live with the fact that I'm going to disagree with politicians. A lot of the time I do disagree with politicians.

Also, I wasn't paying a huge amount of attention to politics so this is on me - at the time of the Southport murders, his talk of the far right made me genuinely wonder if we were back to the days where I would feel threatened because of the colour of my skin. It took me about a week to realise that that isn't what he's saying at all. Actually, he's just smearing a whole bunch of people who have legitimate concerns - riots are obviously not the correct way to express them but he handled that the whole situation very badly

I'm not a devoted anybody voter. I have voted in a range of ways.

It's nothing to do with his personality. It's just he seems to be handling everything really badly.

but underlying it all is this feeling that he doesn't really care about the country.
Which might have something to do with how he's created such a mess

I know he inherited some problems. But in less than two years he seems to have made things worse.

I know one person who was genuinely upset that he stood by Angela Rayner. That was ridiculous. It is extremely clear that she needed to pay second home stamp duty.

no politician is perfect but he seems to have accumulated a hell of a lot of problems in two years. His judgement is not good.

I tend towards something sinister rather than thinking it's incompetence. He's obviously not stupid so what the hell is going on?

I'm not thrilled about having a Reform govt in the next election but here we are.

Word has it? What word’s that then? Honestly, this is utter nonsense.

this bunch have been inept beyond belief, it’s almost as though they weren’t prepared for government. McSweeney and Mandelson had a plan. Starmer wasn’t it. I thought more people knew the behind the scenes stuff.

Coming across well to the British public isn’t superficial if you’re are the Prime Minister.

Coming across well to me doesn’t involve having a fun voice or a cool persona

You’ll be more than not thrilled if Reform get in!

How is Brexit going for you? Looking forward to the NHS being privatised, enjoying the austerity the Tories gave us for 14 years, the depleted services?

I don't like or dislike him, he's just a bit...bland, and his personality doesn't really come across when he talks. If he was a colour he would be grey. If you contrast him to Kemi ( who's growing on me although I've never voted conservative) she is on point, has good come backs and is just generally easier to watch.

It's not about 'come backs', or being easier to watch. It's about policy and values. Fuck me. We're in very dangerous times. Stop thinking about what colour people would be, and wake up to the reality that voting the wrong people in could mean carnage for the UK, economically, constitutionally, societally... dire, dreadful times with an abysmal impact on your quality of life. Young people especially will be fucked.

previouslyknownas · 08/05/2026 21:33

He is a liar and a shit one at that
every time he opens his mouth he lies about something

he has had many opportunities to to good stuff and it’s like he is trying to break up the uk into small chunks

digital id was not in the manifesto
but he is doing everything to bring that in and you have to ask why

he would like to be an authoritarian ( but he has no real power in labour ) as seen many times by the huge flip flops he’s done over just about everything he’s announced

him and Rachel fucking Theives are a pair of cunts who have basically made anything good about the uk shit in the past 2 years

they have hiked up just about everything they can and don’t give a shit as it won’t affect them one bit

I hope they are both gone asap

he is a terrible judge of character - Peter Mandelson

and sacks his staff for shit that he won’t answer to

Horrible horrible man not a decent bone in his body
