... not to understand the loathing of Keir Starmer?

So many people who haven't voted Labour, whether they used to or not, say they haven't voted Labour in yesterday's elections because of Keir Starmer. Is that shorthand for 'the current state of the Labour Party' or is it genuinely a real dislike of the man himself? He seems very bland and inoffensive to me, and in some ways is doing an OK job - e.g. in keeping us out of Trump's war without rupturing relations with the US. Maybe his blandness is the problem. Can anyone explain why people have this reaction to Starmer?

He hasn’t that much integrity to appoint Mandelson of all people. Whatever your point of view on that, it was badly handled.

It was a bad decision, as he’s admitted. I don’t think it speaks to a lack of integrity though. Desperate times…

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 08/05/2026 19:27

I’m just waiting for all the Reform resignations when their prior or current misdemeanours come to light.
i just can’t believe so many people would vote for a party run by such a charlatan as Farage but then the US votes Trump in twice.

I've just been assuming that Mandelson was picked to have an in with Trump. It's a gamble that has backfired.

I agree. Starmer messed up badly with Mandelson but on the whole he seems a decent man who is trying to do a very difficult job, and I think he actually handles foreign policy very well.

I also think we need to be honest about how damaging it is for the country to be changing PMs every couple of years. Burnham circling and trying to work his way back into Westminster is a very poor look in my view.

Yes. Burnham has had 2 chances at leadership already. The way he’s approached this has confirmed for me that he’s not leadership material at national level.

BingoWingoForties · 08/05/2026 19:27

Boris was infinitely less likeable in my eyes, horrendous man, with no principles. I'm glad we have a grown up in charge.

Preppyprepper · 08/05/2026 19:27

I think the media are against him, as they want Farage in power. And most people are thick, so if the daily mail writes that Starmer is Terrible, they go around saying Starmer is Terrible without thinking any more about it.

'Nige' is corrupt, racist and awful, not sure why people aren't slagging hi off more. Genuinely hoping someone digs up something in him so he gets out in prison

Puppylucky · 08/05/2026 19:28

I agree I really don't understand where this visceral hatred is coming from . Reading a press article earlier even a Conservative canvasser was shocked and saddened by the personal attacks he was hearing about Starmer on the doorstep. I do know there is a lot of SM poison floating around about his personal life that people are lapping up but even so I'm not sure where this is coming from.

OneTealShaker · 08/05/2026 19:29

The man hates this country.

He is on the record saying that all immigration laws are racist.

His bff, Lord Hermer, who has appointed as the attorney general l, was a known ambulance chaser actively going after Afghan and Iraq veterans trying to prosecute them. Until the whole thing turned out to be a scam against British forces for compo.

Starmer throws people under the bus to save his skin, over and over and over again.

He lies when he’s found to have broken then rules. Mandelson anyone.

He says that anyone questioning uncontrolled immigration is a far right racist.

He thinks women can have a penis.

Need I go on.

Starmer for me. The most honest and with the best record in a responsible job prior to brcoming PM. I don't give a toss about his voice or whether he'd be a good laugh in a pub. I wouldn't accept a job based on criteria like that, never mind deciding who should run the country.

He's not honest. He lies all the time. He said that women could have penises. He goes back on promises. That's why they call him flip flop. You just can't trust a word he says. Not that you can trust the others either, I'm just saying he's a liar.

This is pretty much all nonsense to the point I really can’t be arsed to break it down.

His voice is like nails down a blackboard to me. Also Rachel Reeves has a monotonous drone to her voice. And Milliband.
Don’t really have a strong political stance either way - I’m old enough to have learnt they are all dreadful fibbers, but none of them make me want to listen to what they are saying. Having a bit of interesting je ne sais quoi is very important to a public figure and none of the present government seem to have any. I’d not want to chat to any of them in a pub!

What you are talking about there is populist appeal. Starmer has zero populist appeal. Trump has it in spades, as does Farage. It's incredibly dangerous and people who are not politically engaged fall for it again and again. We don't want someone to have a drink with. We want someone with decency. I believe him to be that.

Preppyprepper · 08/05/2026 19:30

I also think that depite the absolute chaos going on in the world, the Uk has actually been more stable in the last couple of years compared to the tory liz truss years. I'm hopeful that the economy will pick up in a year or two and then the majority of sensible people will vote for another 5 years of stability (accepting that the 'Nige' fans will always vote for him)

Can you point to a lie? An actual lie? (And I’m GC but let’s leave that out of it).

He's a liar - well what the fuck is Nigel Farage then? 300 million to our NHS anyone?

Papoy · 08/05/2026 19:32

He is a human rights lawyer and he supported a Genocide .... I think he is the worst of the worst.... That's not something to be overlooked in my opinion !

I also hate the others too because they are all wet lettuces !!! Have no morals !!

TheZTeam · 08/05/2026 19:32

Hes lied, flip flopped on policies and ballsed up too many times for me.
hes the man in the big chair. He has to take the responsibility that comes with that.

Anyahyacinth · 08/05/2026 19:33

He is without conscience and principle...gave the 'land of strangers' speech.
Has cooperated with private equity circling our NHS, Palantir, Mandleson know as prince of darkness, paedophile associate...he parachutes into a key role.

Presides over a government doing away with trial by jury...just for starters.

What genocide? If you mean gaza that is widely considered not to be a genocide, by anyone without blue hair

And as for ‘flip flop’. No. He changed a few policies in response to changing conditions. I actively want politicians to do that, and more often.
Like I said, not a massive fan, he’s not radical enough for me, but these sort of criticisms aren’t serious in my view

Yellowshirt · 08/05/2026 19:34

Kier Starmer has never had a plan. We are part of the G7. The country should be self sufficient.
He isn't prepared to sit down and make a proper 5 year plan to fix the country. Every decision he makes is just papering over cracks.
If he got a proper intelligent team together it would be extremely easy to tackle the countries debts and get working people out of poverty and able to relax and enjoy life abit. Otherwise why are we working?
Why can't he look at the bigger picture and the mess he is leaving our children and young adults?

If you think Starmer's in cahoots with PE over the NHS, what on earth do you think of Farage then?

It's actually Farage that hates the UK. He continually talks the UK down and wants to be best buddies with Trump. That's terrifying. He'd drag us into any conflict Trump wanted.

It’s a genocide. It fits the criteria. It’s the ‘Starmer supported it’ I have an issue with. He recognised the state of Palestine. We don’t sell arms direct to Israel. We could do more, for sure, but it’s not all cut and dried.
