My weddings going to be cancelled by a rat virus isn’t it!

We tried to get married in May 2020 and after trying for 18 months gave up. Lost loads of money in deposits. We are now finally in the position to be able to afford to get married again and we’re just about to book it for October.

It feels like history is repeating itself with recent news, and the world wants me to be a spinster. Is it going to happen again? I just don’t want to get my hopes up yet again for the same thing to happen!

Let's be a little more precise - if they start snorting Argentinian Rat Shit.

😂😂 I’ll stay away from the Argentinian kind next time I fancy a line

Mapletree1985 · 08/05/2026 19:12

Your wedding is all about you.

This hantavirus outbreak isn't.

Agree, my DS got what we now understand to be classic Covid symptoms in January 2020. He was swabbed for influenza and the doctor was really confused as he couldn't work out what was happening.

None of us got ill and he went on to never have Covid - despite living in halls from Sep 2020 to Aug 2021.

I am also convinced it was around earlier..

there was certainly something nasty and very Covid like around a bit earlier, my dad had it in nov 2019

RumPidgeon · 08/05/2026 19:17

A spinster 😑

Enough said.

Get a grip OP.

The world doesn’t revolve around you.

People have died and you’re worried about a wedding.

This isn’t Covid, it’s highly unlikely to even transfer human to human.

Did you have your wedding cancelled during Covid? If you didn’t you don’t know how devastating it was for her. Clearly, it’s not going to happen again but when you have lived with anxiety over something it’s easy to spiral. I think reassurance is what is required here.

BettyBoh · 08/05/2026 19:23

More likely that trump ruins in than a rat virus

Only if everyone starts snorting rat shit.

Today's winning response!!!😂😂

Yeah, I had something awful Nov/dec 2019. They diagnosed pneumonia and pleurisy. I honestly thought I was a dying. Took me until the following March to be able to walk upstairs without gasping for breath.

I was working at, and treated at Northwick parks hospital in Middlesex - where the first Covid cases were treated. So many patients and us staff with the same illness. June 2020, they asked if I would give consent for them to review my chest x rays and come in for a Covid antibody test to see if it had actually been Covid I had. Test came back positive.

chalkpaint · 08/05/2026 19:32

I think this is more of a kind of how much more can we take reaction ? So I do get it. Since Covid everything has felt so volatile it felt like Covid ended one day and the war in Ukraine started the next. That in turn started a cost of living crisis then everything just spiralled rents, mortgages, food prices etc. Now another war and more price rises and more uncertainty. Now we are getting this new virus constantly on the news. I sympathise with you OP because although maybe it’s a bit of an overreaction and also maybe you were being a bit tongue in cheek about being a spinster. I get that what bloody next feeling too a lot. Deffo get insurance and good luck with your wedding 💒

RachelGreep87 · 08/05/2026 19:34

Yes, it will. Besides, chances are that either yourself or your fiance will succumb to it. Better a spinster than a widow!

Hollybollyhughes · 08/05/2026 19:50

It's not Covid but some numb nuts go bird watching (I approve) but in an Argentinian land fill. What the f were they thinking. Wedding will go ahead, stop worrying and have a brilliant day and more importantly a wonderful marriage.

Yabbadabbadooooooo · 08/05/2026 20:00

One boat. Three people. You’ll be fine. Relax and enjoy your wedding. This is not an airborne highly contagious disease.

It’s not all about you, OP.

Also, isn’t a marriage license about £150? How has it taken you years to save that?

Actually cost me and my dh £56 to get married on a Wednesday in local registry office. Can't remember how much the Banns were but all in under £200 including a lovely for 4 of us. We didnt need all the bells and whistles and it was a fab day. We splurge out on our honeymoon and 4 more holidays that year 😁

Yes absolutely!

mamaE123456 · 08/05/2026 20:23

Why don’t you just get married in a registry office , quick to arrange and cheaper! Then you don’t have all this worry.

kombuchabucha · 08/05/2026 20:36

What are you more bothered about, being married or having the big party? If both are important, do they need to happen at the same time?

Ours was also planned for May 2020. We did the legal bit just the two of us in the autumn of 2020 then did the big celebration with family and friends last summer, kinda like a vow renewal I guess.

You could do the legal bit ASAP if you don't want to wait any longer for all the legal protections/benefits marriage brings, then there's less pressure on the big celebration happening at a certain time!

MsDitsy · 08/05/2026 20:58

Possibly

Fetaface · 08/05/2026 21:02

You could be a married spinster in a few months or an unmarried spinster. Who knows.

Get some rat traps down at the venue and you'll be good!

ImFinePMSL · 08/05/2026 21:42

It feels like history is repeating itself with recent news

I mean, history does often repeat itself in many respects, but hantavirus is completely different to coronavirus and will not cause a Covid-scale global pandemic.

Just relax, and try to enjoy wedding planning.

Stay away from news articles and social media.

jakscrakers · 08/05/2026 22:47

No chance anyone will accept being lockdown again it has been proved it was all a fallacy don’t worry just enjoy it ignore the crud

breakfeastyumyum · 08/05/2026 22:52

This is a fun thread, I want more. When things are stressful it's always lovely to cosy up on the sofa with a ☕and 🍪and read about rats related stuff and such like. On one of the threads someone said hata was spread on the boat as rats also hop in the swimming pools at night and swim in there. Let's hear more such thrilling details and speculations. Birdwatching at a dump was another possible cause, that sounds so beautifully bleak, all that huge pile of trash and watching special birds while circumventing the local rats, slay!

Starburst360 · 08/05/2026 22:58
