My weddings going to be cancelled by a rat virus isn’t it!

EyUpNowThenLass · 07/05/2026 18:17

We tried to get married in May 2020 and after trying for 18 months gave up. Lost loads of money in deposits. We are now finally in the position to be able to afford to get married again and we’re just about to book it for October.

It feels like history is repeating itself with recent news, and the world wants me to be a spinster. Is it going to happen again? I just don’t want to get my hopes up yet again for the same thing to happen!

OP posts:
MissMoneyFairy · 07/05/2026 19:14

Why wait till october, just have a small registry wedding in a few weeks.

LightYearsAgo · 07/05/2026 19:15

Are you holding it at a rubbish dump in Argentina, if so possibly, if not stop being ridiculous

ThisIsMy · 07/05/2026 19:17

It’s not all about you, OP.

Also, isn’t a marriage license about £150? How has it taken you years to save that?

Tekknonan · 07/05/2026 19:20

Hanta virus is nothing like Covid. They will probably contain it on the ship. Don't worry.

TeaPot496 · 07/05/2026 19:22

You're right, bat virus, rat virus.. What next.. cat virus? If it's not one it'll be t'other.. We're ALL DOOMED!

TeaPot496 · 07/05/2026 19:24

Also, extremely foolish to pass up the financial benefits of marriage for six whole years, just for the sake of throwing a bigger party.

Changednameagain999 · 07/05/2026 19:28

Much more likely to be cancelled for world war 3. And insurance doesn’t cover that.

tanstaafl · 07/05/2026 19:28

How did you lose the deposits?
Surely the venue had to cancel due to lockdown restrictions?

The world is always balanced on a knife edge. We were so naive before COVID

Bubonic plague (you know the thing that wiped out half of Europe in the 1600s) has always been alive and well in Madagascar, a popular tourist destination with over 150,000 international visitors a year. 🤷🏼‍♀️

America has cases of the plague every year. I imagine as do many other countries. I remember watching a documentary years ago about awful illnesses and one couple were on holiday in New York and caught the plague! The woman said when the doctor told her she was like “THE PLAGUE?????!!!!!” 🤣

ohyesido · 07/05/2026 19:32

No it isn’t, the media are just trying to scare people.

I was supposed to get wed in June 2020 so I feel your pain

JanuaryBug · 07/05/2026 19:33

You know a wedding and a marriage are different? You can get married in a registry office, and no longer be a spinster.

Quine0nline · 07/05/2026 19:33

Romping allatollah-itis is more likely to put a porker in the works.

It isn't contained on the ship.

There are people with it in several European countries and two people who flew into the UK from that ship who are currently voluntarily in quarantine at home (we hope, and we hope they can keep that up for the 80 days it takes to be sure you're clear)

I'm frankly amazed at the result of the poll and can only assume that people aren't hearing or reading the news that this is likely a human to human transmission version of the disease and that it kills 30-40% of people who catch it.

Your fears are hopefully unnecessary but certainly not unreasonable.

SilenceInside · 07/05/2026 19:34

I’m sure you can’t be serious about this?! You could have been married at any point over the last few years. What you want is a wedding that costs x amount of money and needs a lot of arranging. That’s a choice that you’ve made.

Regardless, this small outbreak of hantavirus on a cruise ship is not going to derail your wedding plans for October in the UK.

Fraughtmum · 07/05/2026 19:35

You just want a big party

80 days? I thought the maximum (and unusual) was 8 weeks?

Unicornrainbow3 · 07/05/2026 19:37

OP I joked the same, baby born in lock down and pregnant again. It does feel like history is repeating itself.

However I don’t think it will happen, the chances are very slim

XenoBitch · 07/05/2026 19:38

The virus is not a novel one like Covid-19.

There were threads worrying about the recent meningitis outbreak. Are we in lockdown for that now?

It will be fine.

User765342 · 07/05/2026 19:40

A handful of people are dying from a rare virus that has existed for centuries and has always been dangerous.

It has fuck all to do with a bride living thousands of miles away. It's not always about you. This is possibly the most self-centred bridezilla way of making everything about yourself.

The maximum known incubation period for this disease according to the BBC news reports is 80 days.

What about meningitis?

There’s literally an outbreak in England, has had at least 2 deaths and multiple people seriously ill and it’s transmitted human to human.

That is way more of a threat than this virus.

There is no point being afraid of every single disease.
Just follow medical advice and carry on living life.

The human to human transmission version is a recent strain.

Extremely unlikely and, to be honest, if hantavirus did turn into a pandemic your wedding would be the least of your worries - it kills about half of the people who get it, compared to 1-2% killed by Covid.

Some people are grief vultures.

They have to try and make it all about themselves.

Where is this wedding taking place? Do you need a boat to get to it?

Cost of travel to destination wedding yes

unless you are planning on snogging the 5 sick people - no ?
