My weddings going to be cancelled by a rat virus isn’t it!

EyUpNowThenLass · 07/05/2026 18:17

We tried to get married in May 2020 and after trying for 18 months gave up. Lost loads of money in deposits. We are now finally in the position to be able to afford to get married again and we’re just about to book it for October.

It feels like history is repeating itself with recent news, and the world wants me to be a spinster. Is it going to happen again? I just don’t want to get my hopes up yet again for the same thing to happen!

There was a horrendous flu/norovirus going around in November - early December 2019 - I was running the First Aid/Medical room at school at the time - it went from 1-2 kids who had tripped at breaktime or in PE to 30-50 kids all puking, fainting or a sweaty, grey colour unable to stand and all needing to be sent home (and the worst ones did end up in hospital).

However, the same kids who had the flu one in November were then off either straight after Christmas or by early March with respiratory symptoms/Covid as they and their siblings came back from Italian ski trips just outside what became that lockdown area. I think that whilst it had definitely got here by just before Christmas for them to get ill again, that was not the same illness that came in Autumn 2019.

It was November and over Christmas. And it wasn’t flu. The residents are pretty much all vaccinated. I know it can breakthrough the vaccine but it really wasn’t flu, or noro. We had to notify and the doctors were confused.

Honestly I will never forget it. Having so many residents die so suddenly and in quick succession is really shocking. I am 100% certain it was Covid. It was a blessing that for us at this time we didn’t have people in masks, lock downs to rooms and family visits banned. Staff weren’t in fear. From other homes that went through it in Covid I don’t believe the measures made a significant difference to the death rate but I do think it made a significant difference to the residents that in their last moments it was a humane atmosphere.

Don't be ridiculous, try educating yourself about it from proper sources, such as the media statement from the WHO yesterday, not scare mongering social media or tabloids, and quit adding to the misinformation.

A total inability to cope with life, combined with a desperate hankering to be at the centre of “drama”.

I agree.
I have just got back from the Canaries, as often happens with me, I get a bug either onboard or at the airport, I have felt like shite since Monday.

Is it Hantervirus, norovirus, a rogue strain of Covid?? Nope....it's because some selfish bastard was coughing on me for 4 hours sat in close proximity....all will be well in a day or two, no drama/panic needed.🙄

Indeed! The merest suggestion of a rare virus that originates in the southern hemisphere and people forget that there are viruses and infections with similar symptoms around us all the time!

YABVU

My wedding dates were
July 2020 (cancelled)
1 Jan 2021 (cancelled)
18 July 2021 (last day of lockdown, also cancelled with about 4 weeks notice when Boris changed opening day to 19 July)
19 July 2021 (1st day after lockdown; married)

I had THREE weddings cancelled by covid and am still approaching my 5 year wedding anniversay!

Poor old Boris, his handlers kept on telling him to move the goalposts, didn't they?
"Three more weeks."
"We can turn this virus around in twelve weeks."
"Normalish by Christmas."
"It would be inhumane to cancel Christmas - oh, I've just done it, how did that happen?"
"Significant normality by Easter." (Which year?)
"Irreversible roadmap to freedom in June 2021."
"Oops, I meant July."

@HelpMeGetThrough "Uptick" is one of those scary buzzwords which the media loved in 2020. I'm sure the "next slide please" saga while Saint Boris was three hours late for the briefing was part of a plan to keep people glued to their televisions, instead of going out trick or treating (it was 31st October). I had a pumpkin with a big sign saying "Boo for Boris", and only one family came to see it! Angry

But to the OP: step away from the news. The media is always telling us that disaster is just around the corner; always has done, always will.
"People will burn their eyes out looking at the eclipse."
"The roads in Cornwall will be totally gridlocked, because of all the people flocking to see the eclipse." (Remember flocking in 2020?)
"Foot and mouth."
"Your mobile phone is frying your brain."
"Terrorists are around every corner."
"Paedophiles are around every corner, lurking at bus stops outside schools."
"Cancer from your shoes, from your dog, from your pen top."

The world is always balanced on a knife edge. We were so naive before COVID

Bubonic plague (you know the thing that wiped out half of Europe in the 1600s) has always been alive and well in Madagascar, a popular tourist destination with over 150,000 international visitors a year. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Plague is present in many countries (including the US) but we have antibiotics now so much less likely to be the reason your wedding is cancelled.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Legsahoy · 08/05/2026 18:00

I really don’t think so.

Remember swine flu circa 2009? I wrote a whole load of policies and protocols when it first came out…then it just disappeared before anyone got to read them 🤓

Isinglass20 · 08/05/2026 18:00

just as likely to be cancelled as consequence so many lemmings voting Reform 😣

I'm a 100% more horrified and worried by today's irrational, counter productive and naive local election results than I am concerned about another possible pandemic! 🙄😡

YABU. I wish you well. Make sure to have insurance.

Concerning your comments about what the world wants, take comfort with the thought that the world is indifferent.

I suspect any insurance will exclude cancellation due to pandemics. Travel insurance certainly does nowadays.

Aah I’m sorry.you will be fine xx

Sliverfish · 08/05/2026 18:12

Are you a spinster if you're living in sin?

Supergirl1958 · 08/05/2026 18:13

Absolutely not 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️😂😂

Sliverfish · 08/05/2026 18:14

Maybe you should pop to the registry office asap.

Oldtigernidster · 08/05/2026 18:16

What’s wrong with a quiet, low key wedding?

GinaandGin · 08/05/2026 18:36

Your derogatory use of the word 'spinster ' makes me think you want a wedding more than a marriage
You want to play princess for the day
You have had 6 years To get married
Could have had a small wedding

HayfeverComethAndThatRightSoon · 08/05/2026 18:44

You need to stop reading the DM and other sensationalist press @EyUpNowThenLass.

MyDeftDuck · 08/05/2026 18:50

The WHO have stated that hantavirus is NOT a repeat of the pandemic so please stop fretting OP! Go ahead with your wedding plans and enjoy your long awaited day 💐💐🥂

Bellasmellsofwee · 08/05/2026 18:50

I’m just waiting for all the people on this forum, who are chomping at the bit to be able to type STAY THE FUCK AT HOME again.

Just go to a registry office and then have a party. job done. You could probably do it next week.

Totemoneru · 08/05/2026 18:51

Of course it isn't. Don't be so dramatic. Hantavirus is a completely different virus to COVID and not nearly as transmissible. Stop panicking.

eastegg · 08/05/2026 18:51

If your wedding is going to get cancelled because of Hantavirus, then that’s a lot more worrying for plenty of other people than it is for you. Sorry if that sounds heartless, but actually it isn’t.

cantbebothered101 · 08/05/2026 18:52

Sorry but stop being so dramatic and don’t use the word spinster it’s so derogatory

Dawnintheageofaquariams · 08/05/2026 18:56

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 07/05/2026 18:19

Only if everyone starts snorting rat shit.

That's the BBC out then...

Wooky073 · 08/05/2026 19:01

Why would rats affect your wedding?
About as likely as Trump affecting your wedding (probably more likely)
Or Farage effecting your wedding
Or the Alievs exist amongst us forthcoming announcements

Just crack on and try and tune out the noise
Unless of course you are actually having second thoughts about wedding and are looking for a reason to cancel - in which case there are many options

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/05/2026 19:09

Personally I would have got married anyway as soon as you could after COVID. The pandemic made lots of people reassess what is important in life. A fancy wedding isn't important, it's the marriage part that's important. What have you been waiting FOR? A few nice photos of you in a dress and a nice cake?
