My weddings going to be cancelled by a rat virus isn’t it!

EyUpNowThenLass · 07/05/2026 18:17

We tried to get married in May 2020 and after trying for 18 months gave up. Lost loads of money in deposits. We are now finally in the position to be able to afford to get married again and we’re just about to book it for October.

It feels like history is repeating itself with recent news, and the world wants me to be a spinster. Is it going to happen again? I just don’t want to get my hopes up yet again for the same thing to happen!

Given the crap way it has been dealt with and the 6 week incubation period then it’s impossible to know.

How do you propose its ’dealt with’ then?

I stopped believing the BBC a very long time ago. So make of my comment what you will. Hugely exaggerated and full of fear porn. So yes pretty much. My opinion though.

OK, so there's no conflict in the Middle East, Ukraine and Russia aren't at war, Starmer isn't fighting for his political life after recod breaking elections and nobody is planning to nationalise Briyish Steel.

That's very reassuring, thank you.

Well they are letting potentially infected people board planes and go home - so who knows how many others they infect before they are symptomatic?

As I said. My opinion. Not hear to argue what is true and what isn’t. Or any political argument because it’s designed to cause divides and conflicts. But no, I stopped listening to it and much happier for it. Can you change the world? No you can’t.

I was just thinking, that this year is probably the safest time to take a cruise. The companies will surely be on high alert, and be more cautious than usual about contamination etc. Well that's what I told my SIL who has booked and paid for her cruise and is panicking!

Sensible advice. There is nothing we can do about the worldwide political scene and it’s terrifying so best avoided. My blood pressure is always better when I go a few days without hearing Trump’s ranting

But surely every single day people are boarding planes potentially infectious with a whole collection of diseases? This isn’t a new disease. Anyone who has been to Argentina recently and got on the plane home could have been potentially infectious with it. I used to watch a program years ago called “Help I caught it abroad!” which was about all kinds of awful illnesses people caught while away. Some of which I’m sure were infectious. And most of those people got on aeroplanes home.

Exactly. And can I be bothered to get angry over an orange man the same way can I be bothered to get angry over any politician. Can’t change it.

Unlikely. The R number seems to be a lot lower than for Covid or flu, though the incubation period is a bit of a pain.

You say this, but this thread has sent me on a deep dive and anxious spiral! 7 confirmed cases, 2 suspected and a man that died too early to be tested. That’s potentially 10 cases! If the theory of the Dutch husband and wife picking it up before boarding is correct they spread it to potentially 8 people! That would not be insignificant.

I am just really hoping there was a rat on board! 🐀

Maybe stop doom scrolling and get on with your life. Clearly nobody has learned from the last propaganda campaign. Well a lot have, and won’t be falling for it again.

Over 7 million people died hideously from Covid, and are still dying from Covid, by the way. What part of that was a "propaganda campaign"?

Questioning lockdown policies, censorship, fear based messaging or vaccine mandates doesn’t magically mean somebody thinks the virus was ‘fake. Reducing every criticism to “ people died” avoids actual debate. Discussing propaganda, political mistakes, censorship or exaggerated fear in the news. Two things can be true at once. Government/media still manipulated the public perception during it. Shutting down discussion by acting like any critism is some sort of “Covid denial” is exactly why people stop trusting institutions in the first place. I am more concerned with those person’s mental health and what searching for more doom and gloom might to do them. Enjoy your day. I

Acknowledging propaganda, censorship or political failure is not the same denying Covid existed. Conflating the two is intellectually lazy.

I have every sympathy , my daughter has just cancelled her wedding for reasons I won’t go into on here , it was 2 months away , having to cancel loads and you don’t get your money back do you, as as parents we funded a lot 😭so I know the horrors about thinking it might happen again, but think positive …..it will be fine, if you need a wedding dress size 10 , I know someone who’s selling a brand new one cheap 😉💐💐💐

Here's you calling me "intellectually lazy"! After you posted such gems as:

"Being healthy has nothing to do with wearing masks and living in some kind of constant fear. You can be thoughtful to others without doing all that crap, but honestly switch off the TV and I can tell you there would be no need for masks, just general common sense."

"The spread of so called rat virus would stop if everybody turned off the TV and just got on with their lives. "

Yes. You’ve already proved my point. You are buying into the fear of it already.

If you think healthy is by watching the news, staying in a constant state of fear go ahead. You shutting down any kind of debate by saying ‘people died’ is lazy. How many people did you know personally that died? Just a thought. Or do you just get your sources from the news and believe everything. It’s worth being skepticticsl about what you are being told. As far as I can tell people are already scared. That’s enough to make me question. Now yes there is more to being healthy than wearing masks, and fearing everything around you, I can’t see how that is intellectually lazy at all.

peppermintfizz · 12/05/2026 07:58

About 20 people I know died of Covid. Horribly. Before their time.

I fail to see where I "shut down debate" by responding to your dismissive comment about Covid by mentioning the fact that (at least) 7 million people died (horribly), and are still dying (horribly) from Covid:

Clearly nobody has learned from the last propaganda campaign.

Telling people they are being ridiculous is not a debate. Nor is saying:

The spread of so called rat virus would stop if everybody turned off the TV and just got on with their lives. I still can’t believe how much people buy into it.

Sounds like you pick up your health "information" via a tinfoil hat acting as an antenna.

This isn’t a new disease

The human to human variant is relatively new, previously it's only been possible to catch it from rats.

No they’ve known for ages this particular strain can be transmitted human to human. It is not new to this outbreak I promise. Here’s a link and screenshot of an article detailing at human to human transmission in 2014.

You say “ telling people they are being ridiculous is not a debate “ whilst calling people “tin foil hats”. So thank you again for demonstrating exactly the kind of shut down tactics I was talking about.

Also “ About 20 people I know died. Horribly. Before their time.” Is an emotional anecdote, not evidence. And forgive me if I’m skeptical of anybody who says or claims they know an entire small village lost to COVID.

And repeating” 7 million died” as if it ends all discussion isn’t critical thinking either. Those figures include huge variations in reporting standards deaths with vs of, assumptions in excess mortality across countries. Statistics are not sacred because they are repeated on the news.

Questioning narratives, media fear campaigns and headline numbers is called “debate” ( look it up if you don’t believe me ). Calling everybody who questions or wants to debate a “conspiracy theorist “instead of engaging with the point is called “ propaganda” Again there are dictionaries you can look this up.

Some of us have learned from the last few years of blind trust.

You can have your opinion but repeating headline statistics while calling anybody who questions “ tinfoil hats” isn’t debate . It’s dogma.

Have a lovely day. To be honest none of my original post were about Covid. You bought that up. I hope my posts have enlighten you a little. You can discover research and even realise that governments, media and even drug companies rarely have your best interests at heart.

peppermintfizz · 13/05/2026 08:58

The people who I know who died off Covid were real people, talented, funny, well-loved people with plenty of years to live left.

Sad you are so ignorant, as well as rude and churlish.

Off you trot. Go buy more tinfoil.

Is that really the best you can do?

you’ve listed insults, not counterarguments. Saying “ I know people that died” doesn’t automatically mean that very statistic, policy, or narrative should be accepted without question. Some of us actually looked into data rather than just repeat slogans.

Either you are exaggerating for effect or you experienced odds so extreme they are quite frankly unbelievable. Neither changes the fact that questioning statistics is the same thing as denying reality.

Don’t bother replying again - every response you give just proves my point. You don’t want to humiliate yourself further.

oh I’d rather be an intelligent so called ‘tin foil hat’ who questions things, rather than a blind sheep who repeats and does whatever they are told.

To be honest I feel sorry for you. You clearly have absolutely no critical awareness whatsoever. Just proves that watching the news constantly- really does to people.
