My weddings going to be cancelled by a rat virus isn’t it!

EyUpNowThenLass · 07/05/2026 18:17

We tried to get married in May 2020 and after trying for 18 months gave up. Lost loads of money in deposits. We are now finally in the position to be able to afford to get married again and we’re just about to book it for October.

It feels like history is repeating itself with recent news, and the world wants me to be a spinster. Is it going to happen again? I just don’t want to get my hopes up yet again for the same thing to happen!

All zoonotic diseases have the potential to spread human to human but it’s extremely rare.

Its not something like Covid where you can be in a room with someone for a few minutes and catch it.

There are thousands of much more transmissible diseases out there.

True- there are absolutely many viruses that are much more transmissible.

But as a general rule the more transmissible the virus the less deadly. Viruses that are very deadly kill off their hosts quickly which makes transmission harder. Successful viruses are ones that aren't that harmful but transmit easily.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/05/2026 20:18

Unless your wedding is on a landfill site you are probably fine.

On a serious note hanta virus is not particularly transmissible with a low R and as I understand it you are not infectious until you are symptomatic unlike Covid.

XenoBitch · 07/05/2026 20:20

WHO have said it wont be a pandemic.

Shamesame · 07/05/2026 20:26

I had two weddings (same groom though thankfully) cancelled in the pandemic and got married with no restrictions in September 2021, including two holidays abroad straight after so not really sure why you couldn’t get yours done in the last 6 years.

catipuss · 07/05/2026 20:27

No.

You realise you could pop down the registry office and be married in fairly short order? How on earth have you been trying but not managed for six years? You could probably be married within six weeks if you really wanted to!

This.

m1ghtl1ke · 07/05/2026 20:30

You are getting a hard time here op, but I do understand your panic.

Don’t worry it will be fine

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 07/05/2026 20:30

The Hantavirus doesn’t spread between humans very well from what I’ve read.

That’s true but you’ve got to catch it first.

I hardly doubt it’s going to affect OPs wedding.
Its much more likely that she’ll get a different illness or be struck by lighting.

I don't understand why she hasn't managed to get married in six years, however. If she really wanted to be married, they'd have done it (unless she's seen off a series of potential husbands with her obsession...)

MandyMotherOfBrian · 07/05/2026 20:35

Don’t be so fucking stupid.

But there are a lot of these shite threads popping up. In whose interest is it to stir up panic about a non existent risk? Hmmm?

Yep, if it was not for the 24/7 feed of news via the web, you would have heard about it ages after it all kicked off anyway.

icepop2 · 07/05/2026 20:39

I think there will be a lot more cases, according to a Google search you only have to be within 1 metre of someone for 30 minutes, so a number of people on any flight are at risk. I think there could be more people on flights that the KLM flight attendant has been on (assuming she has been on other flights since she caught it from the 69 year old that died).

The 69 year old flew to South Africa so people on that flight are being contacted as they might be affected.

Another man has travelled back to Switzerland and is positive so who knows how many people he has been in 'close' contact with on the way.

Then there are the two British people who are currently self isolating, they got home on a flight too I guess so people are at risk there.

Then there are all the people on St Helena where the boat stopped.

Obviously it's not going to spread with the speed of Covid, but I can understand why people are concerned, especially with the very long incubation period meaning people could feel fine and not realise they're spreading it around.

PersephonePomegranate · 07/05/2026 20:41

Go to a registry office if the thought of being a spinster offends you so much. If you'd really wanted to get married, you could have done that at any time.

Often, it's not marriage that's wanted most though, it's the wedding.

Blahblahblahabla · 07/05/2026 20:43

I don’t know OP. I just read the symptom list for the first time and I swear that’s basically what we have had in this house for the last 10 days. Horrendous headache. Weird stomach and lethargy.

Thats completely ridiculous.

But I remember distinctly autumn before covid working in a care home with so many deaths. So many people ill. Everyone talking about someone with pneumonia and what was going on. And after that we were the only home in the group that never had an outbreak. No deaths. I am convinced it was here before Jan 2020.

Utopiaqueen · 07/05/2026 20:45

I'm another one confused as to how you weren't able to get married in six years. My original wedding was meant to be March 2020 (the week we went into lockdown), postponed to October 2020 and then married October 2021 with no restrictions. I'm amazed you haven't managed it in six years!

estrogone · 07/05/2026 20:45

GuineaPigWig · 07/05/2026 19:03

WW3 is more likely, which I guess could also put a bit of a dampener on any wedding.

My thoughts exactly.

Give over OP.

You actually think your household has had hantavirus for the past 10 days?

You sound like a chap I knew who swore he had Covid 19 on September 2019 before it all kicked off.

Agree, my DS got what we now understand to be classic Covid symptoms in January 2020. He was swabbed for influenza and the doctor was really confused as he couldn't work out what was happening.

None of us got ill and he went on to never have Covid - despite living in halls from Sep 2020 to Aug 2021.

I am also convinced it was around earlier..

LondonSymphony · 07/05/2026 20:50

Do you have any rats on the guest list? I’d probably ask them not to come.

You're right, bat virus, rat virus.. What next.. cat virus? If it's not one it'll be t'other.. We're ALL DOOMED!

YABVU

My wedding dates were
July 2020 (cancelled)
1 Jan 2021 (cancelled)
18 July 2021 (last day of lockdown, also cancelled with about 4 weeks notice when Boris changed opening day to 19 July)
19 July 2021 (1st day after lockdown; married)

I had THREE weddings cancelled by covid and am still approaching my 5 year wedding anniversay!

Userjal · 07/05/2026 21:04

Aren’t people rude, of course your allowed to be worried about your wedding, I was a 2020 bride to be, of corse it was awful that so many people died and are dying this time, but my wedding was important to me, I wanted the big white wedding and to be a bride not spend £150 on a marriage license. I honestly sympathise with you so much, I’m sure you’ll get your day but it’s only natural to worry, it can sometimes feel like the world is against you!
