My weddings going to be cancelled by a rat virus isn’t it!

We tried to get married in May 2020 and after trying for 18 months gave up. Lost loads of money in deposits. We are now finally in the position to be able to afford to get married again and we’re just about to book it for October.

It feels like history is repeating itself with recent news, and the world wants me to be a spinster. Is it going to happen again? I just don’t want to get my hopes up yet again for the same thing to happen!

What about meningitis?

There’s literally an outbreak in England, has had at least 2 deaths and multiple people seriously ill and it’s transmitted human to human.

That is way more of a threat than this virus.

There is no point being afraid of every single disease.
Just follow medical advice and carry on living life.

You don't need to tell me that.

All I was commenting on was that the OPs fears are not unreasonable.

I did point out they were probably unnecessary.

Some people are grief vultures.

They have to try and make it all about themselves.

It's exactly the same sort of people who hear about other people's children dying under inbelievably tragic or violent circumstances and then making a huge show and dance over how they need to "hug their own kids closer tonight"

ClearFruit · 07/05/2026 19:45

Get over thyself.

The maximum known incubation period for this disease according to the BBC news reports is 80 days.

Well I had a quick Google and can’t find it. WHO advice is to quarantine for 45 days which is what they have been advised to do. I assume because anything longer is EXTREMELY rare.

Booking an October wedding in May is extremely short notice. Doesn't sound like much of a celebration to begin with tbh. How are all the vendors going to be slotted in within a few months?

Only if everyone starts snorting rat shit.

This really made me laugh. Thank you.

Hanta virus is nothing like Covid. They will probably contain it on the ship. Don't worry.

They haven’t managed to, but you’re correct that it’s nothing like covid.

MelOfTheRoses · 07/05/2026 19:51

Just Elope 🤷‍♀️

It's cheaper.

Let's be a little more precise - if they start snorting Argentinian Rat Shit.

isn't it the Andean version?

Get a grip OP.

The world doesn’t revolve around you.

People have died and you’re worried about a wedding.

This isn’t Covid, it’s highly unlikely to even transfer human to human.

"Hantavirus typically spreads from rodents - but in the latest outbreak the transmission between people was documented for the first time", the WHO said.

All zoonotic diseases have the potential to spread human to human but it’s extremely rare.

Its not something like Covid where you can be in a room with someone for a few minutes and catch it.

There are thousands of much more transmissible diseases out there.

I believe that names are given on the basis of where a virus is first identified. The BBC says 'He said the first two people with the confirmed virus had "travelled through Argentina, Chile and Uruguay on a bird-watching trip which included visits to sites where the species of rat known to carry the virus was present".'

This is not the first time it’s spread human to human.
There have been a couple of other outbreaks of it before now.

But the WHO website says this?

Although uncommon, limited human‑to‑human transmission of HPS due to Andes virus has been reported in community settings involving close and prolonged contact. Secondary infections among healthcare workers have been previously documented in healthcare facilities, though remain rare.

NotAnotherScarf · 07/05/2026 20:03

No, unless you're getting married in 1348

Feis123 · 07/05/2026 20:03

Spinster is a technical term and I think you are long past it. Unless you are not living in sin and then I apologise.

Have we moved on from monkey pox and nuclear war?

Looks like it 😁

CatherineRachel16 · 07/05/2026 20:13

Are you getting married on the ship? I'm so confused.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 07/05/2026 20:14

Tell your guests to stay away from long, close and intimate contact with people if they're unaware of their travel history, particularly if that contact includes connecting mucosal membranes or open wounds and you'll be golden. Have a lovely wedding.

BeeDavis · 07/05/2026 20:14

If you were that arsed about being married you’d have done it within the last 6 years…
