Whoever you are voting for today, it's probably not Labour - they might loose 2,000 seats.

How long exactly will it be before he resigns?

What tactic could that possibly be? Please enlighten me.

I’ll let you return to your long-running Starmer thread.

A tactical vote only.

What is it Smiley said about fanatics - ‘the fanatic is always concealing a secret doubt’.

Ah. So you have doubts about Reform? That is understandable. There is lots to be doubtful about.

No, I’m intrigued - what tactic did I employ and why?

On another note - how was your day?

My day was excellent. Reform hasn't done as well as predicted in the polls. Sadly they took Suffolk, but there'll be new elections in a couple of years due to the boundary changes - comfortably long enough for Reform to show themselves for what they are. Senedd and Scottish Parliament elections - good results, Reform won't be in any coalition that's formed in Wales and they came nowhere.

Did Labour get a bloody nose? Hell yes. I'm fine with that too, because contrary to what your lot think, I'm not a Labour fan at all.

It's a lovely quote but I'm not that convinced. I've seen plenty of fanatics, from religious ones to Trump superfans, who have no doubts at all or are employing Oscar-winning acting skills to conceal them.

Predicted 1500 - what are they now 1450? Hell of a prediction!

It’s a great day for the nostalgics among us. Labour’s about to descend into a Healey-Benn style scrap, but on steroids. Control of the party is up for grabs.

The left of Labour will never forgive Starmer’s clumsy (if sensible) campaign to stamp on them, and there’s no real working class Labour right wing left. They’re nearly all ex-public sector employees or party lackeys.

How the vicious fight between former charity, NGO and trade union time servers v Starmer and his depleted band of apparatchiks will go, who knows. But it’ll be fun to watch. And will finish Labour off.

TransportNerd · 08/05/2026 22:47

Starmer announced earlier he's not quitting.

Immediate result of that was a drop in the cost of government borrowing, and a rise in the value of the pound. My pension fund value has gone up as well.

Stability matters.

TeenagersAngst · 08/05/2026 20:05

Labour lost 291 seats in 2009 so not sure how PPs are concluding this is a better result unless using a different metric.

Edited

I can't even remember what I said!!!

Why should he quit just because of the local election results? We’ve got a culture of people quitting at the first sign of any turbulence (Miliband and Clegg in 2015, Cameron in 2016, Truss in 2022) and that doesn’t help anyone.

Starmer might not be great and he makes a lot of the wrong decisions, but he needs to stay in post and face up to the consequences of them. He needs to get rid of Reeves and get someone a bit more intelligent in the post, perhaps Thornberry. He needs Rayner back too. Maybe she could replace Lammy.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 08/05/2026 23:51

He should quit for Labour’s sake. If he doesn’t, Labour’s dead.

Kirbert2 · 08/05/2026 23:52

My area has been Labour forever. Labour lost ALL of their seats today.

Reform didn't gain enough to take overall control but gained 29 seats.

Fruitbatdancer · 08/05/2026 23:56

I think they are all shit, but heard a great quote today “if Starmer quits now it’s the equivalent of soiling yourself and changing your hat”
if he’s out, it’s just another numpty. Anyone who wants to be a politician should be immediately disallowed.

True, but there were only 469 Labour-held seats being contested in 2009, so losing 291 meant they lost 62% of their seats. They also finished third in 2009. This year they were defending over 2,300 seats, nearly 5 times as many. That difference means it is pointless looking at the absolute number of seats lost. This year, they have finished second and their net loss is running at 59% of the seats they were defending. There are still around 300 results to come so the figures will change a little, but not much.

Your pension fund would show EOD not live pricing, and it’s probable that your pension fund is more exposed to equities and cash, so please be serious.

You will have continued volatility in the bond markets, as the Labour psychodrama plays out, so buckle up.

What I love about this is - Labour are focusing on who should replace Starmer.
The amusing part is - they’ve failed to govern under Starmer, and will fail to govern under whoever replaces him.

Quite simply, they’re a waste of time and space - the socialist experiment has failed (again).

Funny how the people who were devastated that Labour won with a landslide are now desperate for them to replace Starmer. He needs to stand firm and get on with the job. Those on the left have been dying to get rid of him from the start and now being egged on by the right.

It’s likely more people than that. Look at Wales, near total wipeout.

Get on with the job, you say.

How’s it going for him, so far?

Vetting failures, u-turns, back bench rebellions, anti-growth, other policy failures.

Many of us would rather he stepped away from his laptop and didn’t do any more ‘dumb shit’ until he’s put out of our collective misery.

Yep, Labour supposedly won the GE in a landslide (in reality voter turn out was dire, and many of the ones that did, only voted Labour to punish the Tories). And now Labour have just lost Wales - for the first time ever. They’ve only been in power 1 year and 10 months. That takes some doing 😂

Yet if the markets went the other way you lot would be posting it in outrage for sure.

MNLurker1345 · 09/05/2026 08:15

@unistress, you do know that the landslide came from one of the lowest turnouts in nearly 25 years.

The sentiment in the UK now can be seen as a reflection of the fact that the win was not a popular vote.

They were always on thin ground and then it quickly became very clear that they had no plan on how to govern. They are amateurs, learning on the job.

Yep after 100 years, that takes some doing by Starmer.

Quite an ode to his namesake.
