Am I being too stingy with pocket money?

Helenmum3 · 05/05/2026 13:47

DD is primary age and we give her £80 a month. I was with friends with similar age kids at the weekend and each of them give their own kids a higher amount.

We aren’t particularly well off, certainly not ‘Mumsnet rich’ but I’d say we are fairly average earners for this day and age. I earn about £50,000, DH nearer &75,000 with bonuses.

I thought £80 was fair personally?

£20 a week is exactly what I got for pocket money in my teens, so I would say it's fine BUT that was back in the 90s so, allowing for inflation, it should probably be £30 pw now.

£20 per week in the 90s equates to exactly £55 per week today.

caringcarer · 06/06/2026 23:29

At primary £1 for each year they have lived so 7 years old £7, 9 years old £9. Anything not spent went onto savings.

seven201 · 06/06/2026 23:32

It sounds a huge amount to me. My year 5 child is meant to get £3 a week, but she’s rubbish at doing her chores so she rarely gets it.

However, I buy all her clothes, the odd toy etc. and that does all add up pretty quickly when they grow! So if that £80 is to cover everything, that’s not so scary sounding. £960 a year though! Just be careful they learn the value of money and aren’t just spoiled.

Per week??!

Wherearemymarbles · 06/06/2026 23:38

Blimey!! Thats what we gave our 17 year old!
they got no pocket money at primary!

Brokentoes85 · 07/06/2026 02:38

Here we go with the mumsnetters claiming they aren't well off and earn average.

FYI average wage in the uk is 32k, so between you you're on 4 x that

YABU - £80 is a ridiculously large amount to give a primary school child. Do they earn it or is it just given? If given then you aren't instilling any work values and will raise a spoilt child. Clearly you socialise with similar parents.

If you pay then for doing jobs around the house, you're not teaching them they need to contribute as part of the family because you live there.

Mine get £300/month each and they are 6 and 3. I am not sure if I am being too tight either. It's so tough isn't it!

Surely if the 3 yo is getting £300, the 6 yo should be getting £600.

thinkingaboutipswich · 07/06/2026 05:46

Blimey - my 16 yos get £100 a month and thought that was generous, we are high earners in London. What is your child spending £80 a month on in primary? Sounds mad to me OP.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 06/06/2026 22:47

Jesus Christ £80 a month!!!!!

what do they pay for with this??

do they do their own clothes shopping?
pay for clubs subs?

my kids get nowhere near this!

Why have you quoted my post and asked me all those questions?

Good point! I'll give them £600 going forward. They were struggling a bit on only £300

I think you can do both. Tidy your room and do the dishes because you are a
Human living in a family. Clean the bathroom? Earnable.

Yes per week.

golemmings · 07/06/2026 15:51

At 15 I got the family allowance - about £30 a month. It covered all my purchases including school uniform . It would be £90 a month now.

InterestedDad37 · 07/06/2026 16:03

I think by average standards, you actually are loaded, and so is your DD 🙂

Allseeingallknowing · 07/06/2026 16:08

You are way above average earners!

concertinacornflake · 07/06/2026 16:15

I’d say we are fairly average earners for this day and age. I earn about £50,000, DH nearer &75,000 with bonuses. These are well above average salaries.

Really annoys me when people claim they are average when they are not!

Mama2many73 · 07/06/2026 16:18

As a foster carer we give an amount set by our Local Authority. For a 17yr old that is £15 per week do roughly £60 a month, purely for their own choices. We pay food, clothes, phone etc.

TFMinx · 07/06/2026 16:28

Stand down everyone, the OP just fancies a bit of a boast, and not a very stealthy one at that.

The whole purpose of this is to chat is it not ?

just wondering what they do with £80 a month just seems a lot

why enter a discussion if you don’t want to chat

@Besidemyselfwithworry how could that poster answer all the questions you’ve asked about the OPs children??

MidnightMeltdown · 07/06/2026 17:20

Ionlywentinforafuckingaribaldi · 05/05/2026 13:57

Yeah its loads, we give our 18 yr old £15 a week, and he works. What is a primary age kid spending £20 a week on?'!

Adults still get pocket money at 18? 😮

DopamineDeficient · 07/06/2026 17:28

My child is 13 and gets £20 a month, I pay for his clubs, clothes, activities and if he wants to do anything extra with friends I pay for that too.

But I’m not the OP so why would you quote my post and ask those questions? It looks like you’re expecting me to answer them!?

Sorry, do we make her buy her own presents? What do you mean, she obviously gets presents from us for her birthday and Christmas.

I don’t think I’d describe us as well off, but that’s a different conversation altogether.

Correct me if I’m wrong - I think the poster meant, does she save for birthday presents for others out of her pocket money?
