AIBU to consider voting Green instead of Labour in local elections?

I’m strongly thinking of ditching Labour & voting for the Green party in the forthcoming local elections because Labour has been such a dismal failure. Do you think this is a good idea or am I being unreasonable?

Im voting Labour. I like the local candidate - he spoke at my daughter’s school, he’s been visible and active and he sent a specific letter to everyone on the estate about a road issue we have complained about and how he’ll fix it.

Also I’m Jewish so wouldn’t touch Green anything now. Appreciate they won’t be doing much to sort the war while talking bins and libraries, but doing well in these elections would tell me I’m not wanted here and I should be seriously considering my future

Sausagenbacon · 05/05/2026 07:58

YANBU. We can’t vote in Bristol this May. But if we could I’d vote Green
I'm from Bristol too. I'm very interested to hear why you think that they,, and our Green MP Carla Denyer, deserve support.

Sausagenbacon · 05/05/2026 08:05

Please look at the ACTUAL record of the people standing
on making your community work better

Yes, check out Tina Ion, a candidate for the party in Newcastle. Her antisemitic social posts are truly vile.

CoffeeCantata · 05/05/2026 08:07

No, you're unreasonable for thinking of voting for the Greens with the current leadership.

Also don’t be too disheartened by responses on this forum. Mumsnet has a heavy right wing bias and a large number of one issue voters who are obsessed with gender politics.

what drugs are you on - Mumsnet is HEAVILY LEFT WING.

OP - depends on how racist you are, and how much you believe that the leader can make boobs bigger by hypnotherapy - 'the evidence of this is growing' he said and this on record. I am a tory supporter BUT if voting for labour (who are absolutely shit) means i keep that psychotic green party out - i will vote for labour.

I honestly think journos are doing the rounds on here at the min, whipping up hatred against the Greens. We had one Reform thread sure but the rest have been anti Green and it’s been going on for weeks. Very suspicious.

People have a view on them, why wouldn’t they?

Parcell · 05/05/2026 08:22

I live in a London borough that’s always Tory controlled and dominated apart from a few wards which are Labour. I will vote Labour although I dislike the national party, because both candidates, though new, are visible and experienced campaigners and Labour councillors locally tend to go above and beyond to sort out residents’ issues.

I haven’t seen the Green candidates at all. Googling brings up nothing except two rather posh linked in profiles nothing about what they believe in or past campaigning work. I also don’t agree with the Green Party National policies.

These are LOCAL elections.

What do your LOCAL candidates have to say about LOCAL issues

What LOCAL Green policies do you like more than Labour

My local councillors, both county and district, are Greens.

I was a bit sceptical about them at first, but they've all turned out to be very effective councillors. As well as being good at getting individuals' casework sorted out, they've been really proactive at things like getting gates and stiles repaired on public footpaths, potholes fixed, prevented our local bus service from being cut, kicked ass re EHCP delays and sorted out a couple of awful neighbour nuisance issues on one of the local estates.

It's a hung council (Green, LD, Labour and a couple of independents), and they all seem to work well together. I suspect because it's pointless any one group trying to outvote the rest, they have to work collaboratively. Whatever, it's the best it's been in all the 35 years I've lived here, despite big cuts in the central government grant.

You should report those posts to MN.

😂oh dear god.

We are real people with real concerns. I am totally against reform and see the greens as exactly as despicable as reform. The same inhumane and manipulative populist tactics. Wrong on all levels.

Having seen Polanski's horrid campaign of stirring up social division, I couldn't be more repulsed.

So for many it's centre parties all the way now.

Polanski has actually done Labour a huge favour.

Hallowedturf · 05/05/2026 09:30

The fact anyone is campaigning for Gaza in a British local council election is beyond stupid.

Particularly damning on the Greens, for even talking about it.

A sign of how depressingly bad UK politics has become.

It’s not even relevant in a national election.

Northernstella · 05/05/2026 09:59

What the greens are doing is simply thuggish.

EdgyNavyHiker · 05/05/2026 10:07

Is your local candidate one of the antisemitic ones?

BIossomtoes · 05/05/2026 10:08

These are local elections. I’ve always voted Labour nationally and LibDem locally, our LibDem councillors do an excellent job. It’s wrong to see this as an opportunity to stick it to the government.

Tell that to the swathes of voters limbering up to do just that.

Can you explain this more please. In which countries is it illegal to criticise Israel? Which countries does Israel 'control'

Riddled with anti-semites, in favour of leaving NATO, giving up all our nukes, allowing in unlimited migrants, legalising crack, letting a load of prisoners out of prison. And that’s before we get onto the economic insanity.

I’m no fan of the current Labour Party but will be voting for them with enthusiasm to try and keep the Greens out of my area.

You missed that they also can't define what a woman is.

NellieJean · 05/05/2026 11:16

JennyChawleigh · 04/05/2026 17:35

How good is your current local councillor? Our Labour councillor has been excellent on local issues so I will be voting for him again despite my disappointment with the the party at a national level.

Edited

That’s the point the clue is in the word local. I actually hope the Greens win a few councils and people will soon see what a bunch of incompetents they are, that’s before we get to the antisemitism.

Patapouf · 04/05/2026 23:23

Gosh since when has MN been such a Tory cesspit? Or is it just overrun with bots?

greens seem to be the only ones working to ensure a better future for our DCs so I know who I’d vote for if we had elections in my areas this year.

Hmm. I am not a bot or a Tory but I have to say that I don't like Polanski. I would vote Green to keep Reform out, but that's it.

MelancholiaOrRaving · 05/05/2026 11:09

Most people don’t factor that into their voting decisions. I most definitely don’t.

CruCru · 05/05/2026 11:18

Honestly? I grew up in Brighton - the council was a nightmare when it was Green. These are local elections - the people elected will not have any control over Gaza (apart from organising protests) nor will they be able to change laws. Pick the people who seem sane and who are likely to make sensible decisions on planning and bins.

TemperanceWest · 05/05/2026 11:19

The bond markets are going to pulverise the UK if the Greens gain the councils as it’s seen as a sign of what’s to come in a GE. That might not matter to many but it will when the cost of living soars and the spending cuts come in.

Utter rot - the bond markets do not care about local elections one jot. In fact very few people in the UK care, given how low the turnout is.
