AIBU to consider voting Green instead of Labour in local elections?

I’m strongly thinking of ditching Labour & voting for the Green party in the forthcoming local elections because Labour has been such a dismal failure. Do you think this is a good idea or am I being unreasonable?

YABU. They are anti-Semitic and racist.
(And Communist, if that bothers you - a Green Government would completely destroy the economy).
They are the most dangerous political party we have had for a very long time.

I believe so yes.

A growing sense of anti immigration sentiment, largely focussed on “small boats”.

A focus on “gender critical” beliefs in the guise of protection of women.

Largely mocking the greens because of their position on drug policy.

I’d categorise these stances as right wing, and they are widely held on this site.

Being a sex realist/GC has absolutely nothing to do with being right wing Grin

You've fallen for some absolute nonsense there.

VoiceFromThePit · 04/05/2026 23:03

well nobody else is going to vote labour, do you want to be the only one 😂

I absolutely believe this. Thankfully, they will never come to power.

Dont blame you for not voting Labour. But dont vote for the Greens. They are awful. Nothing like they were when they started out.

Patapouf · 04/05/2026 23:23

Gosh since when has MN been such a Tory cesspit? Or is it just overrun with bots?

greens seem to be the only ones working to ensure a better future for our DCs so I know who I’d vote for if we had elections in my areas this year.

Skinnysaluki · 04/05/2026 23:26

To all those people claiming that the greens are ‘nothing like when they started out’, have you read any of their manifestos ever? Because the positions haven’t changed.

So what is the change you are so cross about?

the only change I can see is that they look like getting over a fifth of the vote

The point of drug legalisation is to prevent harm to users.

@ForCyanGuide How will drug legalisation work? Will we be able to walk into a shop and buy cocaine or heroin like we can buy lip salve or vitamin C supplements?

SlumChum · 05/05/2026 00:52

In local elections you should vote for the people who have and will make an actual difference. Look at their history, have they campaigned to save a community centre? Worked in public services? Volunteered or raised money for charity? Set up a local art or music event? Regularly asked questions to the Council? Whatever is important to you, see if their actions match it.

Villanousvillans · 05/05/2026 02:35

The point of drug legislation is mainly to reduce crime.

By making it not a crime anymore. Not a crime anymore = technically no crimes.

The point of drugs being illegal is to try and stop people doing them. What benefits to society are there from people being able to take crack cocaine on mass? Is that something you are happy for your children to do? Have you ever met a crackhead?

There is nothing right-wing about thinking women's sport, prisons, refuges, rape counselling group therapy, breastfeeding and menopause support, loos and changing rooms, women's officer roles and all the other things reserved for women and girls only for our safety, privacy and fairness should be for females, not males.

hattie43 · 05/05/2026 06:28

The greens are barking mad so why on earth would you support them , especially as a protest vote against Labour . Personally I would abstain rather than vote for a party I don’t believe in .

Oh, it's that simple?

Just think of how low we could get the crime stats if we legalise rape, theft and murder!

I'm sure there will be no unintended negative social consequences of no longer punishing undesirable behaviour.

I have voted green in the past in the local elections when they stood for environmental issues. I could not give them my vote now- they have turned into devisive populists. I grew up around sectarianism, and cannot vote for any party that plays that card.

💯

Northernstella · 05/05/2026 06:36

Labour Lib Dems and Tories all seem like excellent choices these days.

Green and Reform go in the bin

Upstartled · 05/05/2026 06:37

The prospect of a Green led council is just about the only thing that could get me to vote Labour.

That’s pretty much what it was like 200 years ago

Sartre · 05/05/2026 07:35

I honestly think journos are doing the rounds on here at the min, whipping up hatred against the Greens. We had one Reform thread sure but the rest have been anti Green and it’s been going on for weeks. Very suspicious.

Is drug use equivalent to rape and murder? Really?
If there was some decriminalisation maybe it would tackle the actual rapes and murders that are currently part of county lines gang activities.
in any case, it’s worth having the discussion- many other countries have. It seems that in other places people can have a normal conversation about changes that could be made to improve lives and services. Shame that doesn’t happen in the UK

So you support the greens then? Which of their policies do you like? Does all the racism bother you, or were you already racist?

Because some people are only now beginning to see that a party they had filed under 'harmless environmentalists' are actually antisimitic, drug pedalling, women hating, fiscally incontinent tit-whisperers.

There have been zillions of anti reform threads . I think there is a huge left wing bias on this forum but the Greens need to be called out because they’ve gone from a gentle eco friendly party to harbouring racist antisemetic candidates and just dangerous policies .

angelos02 · 05/05/2026 07:45

I am more afraid of the Greens getting in than any other party. The current party are happily throwing tax payers money around. The Greens would be even worse.

Do you think drug use is completely unrelated to other crimes, including rape and murder? Really?

If it is legal, will addicts suddenly gain the ability to earn the money to pay for their fix? Will they stop being vulnerable to exploitation and assault? Will drug lords just pack up nicely and go home, or continue the murders, raping and offering of even cheaper and more dangerous drugs than the legalised ones?
