AIBU to consider voting Green instead of Labour in local elections?

I’m strongly thinking of ditching Labour & voting for the Green party in the forthcoming local elections because Labour has been such a dismal failure. Do you think this is a good idea or am I being unreasonable?

YANBU. We can’t vote in Bristol this May. But if we could I’d vote Green.

Also don’t be too disheartened by responses on this forum. Mumsnet has a heavy right wing bias and a large number of one issue voters who are obsessed with gender politics.

What appeals to you about the party of rabid Jew-haters?

Errr just a bit. Have you seen how Reform are imploding and unable to even manage roles at a local level.

How has Labour been a failure?

Loungingbutnotforlong · 04/05/2026 18:40

Labour are a sorry disappointment, but the Greens are a disgrace. They are not about the environment- they have some crazy policies- open borders, closing prisons down (?!) not to mention the anti-semitism. Really- they are not a serious option.

Being anti trans doesn’t protect women. It just stigmatises a marginalised group.

see above re drug legalisation. IMO people who at least aren’t open to the well researched and studied debate about drug legalisation generally have contempt for drug users. Which isn’t a view that I hold, no.

So if pro women’s rights is being “anti-trans”, does that mean the trans rights movement is misogynistic? If not, why not?

And you think reform care about women’s rights! 🤣😆🤣

Did I say anything remotely like that?

Clue, if you have to make up complete shit, it's because you don't have a point.

Sadly, both left and right leaning parties will cheerfully sell womem down the river.

Labour always poll badly here (from the 1 in 5 that can be arsed to vote).

However keeping the reform rabble from the door is the key here. If that means Green (who have no chance of winning) then so be it.

Hmm. Racists or antisemites? You don’t HAVE to vote for either you know.

Lunalara · 04/05/2026 18:42

The Green Party isn’t as good with environmental policies as before, but people are delusional if they think Reform are a better option. If we ever considered voting Reform in for the GE, we would have Trump 2.0 in the UK. As for Labour, they have done pretty atrociously in domestic issues, and have done somewhat ok with foreign policy. Take of that what you will.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 04/05/2026 18:45

I used to like the Green party and consider them a viable alternative, but I think they've lost the plot, sadly.

Zack Polanski is a very skilled communicator, but I don't find him a credible leader and I don't see him as offering any workable solutions to the problems that we are facing as a nation.

They know what a woman is, which is the very lowest bar for being able to protect women’s rights. Greens, SNP and Lib Dem’s fail to even reach that lowest of the low bar. The jury’s out on Labour until they publish the ECHR guidance.

Great news, we don’t have to vote for either of the utterly abhorrent Greens or Reform.

Let’s be frank, these parties are popular as they offer easy solutions to complex problems - the cost of living, inequality etc. Greens blame the rich, Reform blame the immigrants. Both are spinning an equally ludicrous lie. Don’t be gullible and fall for it.

You're insane if you vote for Reform if you care about women's rights. Knowing what a woman is doesn't seem to have stopped the Republicans from eroding women's rights in the US.

To be fair, thdemocrats would also habe eroded women’s rights. The Americans were damned either way

Um I think you need to get out and read up on Reform a bit more. 🤣

Ways Reform threaten women’s rights :-

Scrapping the Equality Act 2010: Reform has pledged to replace the Equality Act 2010 and eliminate "diversity, equality, and inclusion" measures. Critics suggest this would remove crucial protections against sex discrimination in the workplace and in public life.
Reproductive Rights and Abortion: Reform leader Nigel Farage has described the current 24-week abortion limit as "utterly ludicrous," raising concerns about restricting access to abortion. Some members have argued against an "absolute right" to bodily autonomy.
Workplace Rights: Proposals to replace the Employment Rights Act have caused concern over the potential loss of protections for maternity leave, job security, and discrimination protections.
"Pro-Family" Policies and Tax: Some proponents associated with the party have suggested a "reverse child benefit" or tax increases for childless individuals, aimed at encouraging a traditional, "family-friendly" structure that critics say would push women into the home and limit their choices.

Rhetoric and Representation
Gender Gap and Misogyny: Reports indicate that Reform UK has struggled to attract women voters, with a significant gender divide in support. The party has been accused of fostering a "nasty thread of misogyny".
Offensive Remarks: Multiple candidates have been accused of making sexist or offensive remarks about women in public life.
Andrew Tate: Farage has referred to misogynist influencer Andrew Tate as an "important voice for men," attracting criticism for appearing to endorse such views.

The Lib Dems are a viable alternative in my area. This is their policy and while not perfect, at least they don’t insist that trans women are women.

Councils run Leisure Centres - do they prioritise safeguarding of women and girls

Councils run LEA schools - do they ensure that safeguarding is key to all policies

Councils run local transport - do they prioritise buses and trams that can be used by those too young or old to drive

Councils deal with potholes - do they prioritise repairs over legal fights

Councils fund adult social care - do they try to keep offshore private equity companies from taking profits

Councils fund SEN education - are they trying to keep private profiteers out

Councils handle bin collections - is the recycling system in your area working

Councils DO NOT build homes
Councils DO NOT control where asylum hostels are placed
Councils DO NOT set Whitehall policy
Councils DO NOT report to local MPs

Of course I’m not voting Reform. Or Green. And I judge anyone who thinks it’s a reasonable thing to do. It’s as reasonable as smacking a small child. You don’t have to do something so vile. So don’t.

If you’re thinking of voting Green, you are almost deranged enough to not be entitled to vote at all.
Please read their policies. They are nut jobs. And dangerous ones at that.

At a local level it is about what their policies are for the locality. Our green councillor is the most active one we have ever had, taking up local causes and helping people.

Ed Davey thinks a woman can have a penis. He says it all the time. He hasn’t even pretended to roll back on this at all.

Labour need more time. Was never going to be easy given what they inherited.

I said Reform know what a woman is. And they do. And the Greens don’t. How can you think if protecting women’s rights when you don’t know what a woman is?

I think you should read there manifesto and up on them. There politics are seriously scary and I dread to see the state the country we will be in if they get in power.

Not goading, just curious. What policies do you find scary?

As many people have pointed out, I’m not voting for the parliamentary party leader. My local Lib Dem councillors are actually far more sensible and have been doing the job well for years.
