Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 13:40

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

It's a bit specific and boring - but Tesco used to do, in their prepared veg section, a thing called "chef's base". It was very finely chopped up carrot, celery, onion and garlic, but very fine and fresh, not frozen.
I loved that stuff because as well as using it in cooking, I used it mix it into all my kids sandwiches and wraps to get more veg into them and because it was so fine, you could eat it raw.
I miss it. I know I could just make it myself, but its a faff to get the pieces that tiny.
They also used to do spaghetti made of butternut squash that I haven't seen for ages.

Do you mean Ices?

They’re mentioned in a book called The Glass Mountain by Martina Evans in Ireland in 70s, Ices.

Burger King's mushroom double Swiss
Cabana bars
Panda pops

Phileas Fogg Mignons Morceaux - the tiny, crunchy garlic bread rounds. They were gorgeous and I think about them all the time 😂
Heinz curried beans and barbecue beans, in the small tins.
The Zabaglione-in-a-box kits my mother used to buy.
Cheese Footballs! Every childhood Christmas. Hope someone will tell me they are still available somewhere.

Ovaltine bars. Think I last had one in the eighties. Was thrilled to discover Milo bars are really similar and stock up if I’m ever in Asia for work

Ovaltine chocolate was so good.

I'd forgotten about it.

I'm nearly 68. I really miss Amazin' Raisin chocolate bars and the legendary Aztec bar (both available in the early 1970s).

And oh, the chunky dairy milk bars we got then- and the Milk Tray bar!

"It's amazin' what raisins can do,
All that goodness and it’s all for you
You just have to do what you've got to do
It’s amazin’ what raisins can doooooooooi!”

Would a food processor make the same sort of thing?

Lindt Crispy. DH tracked some down for me online for Christmas but I have finished them now and need to get back on the dark web for another fix.

Not sure whether it was Yoplait or Muller, but it was a split pot yoghurt, with strawberry yoghurt in one side and mini digestives in the other. I have tried to replicate it, but it just isn’t the same.

Quorn used to do plain fillets in both white wine and red wine sauce and they were gorgeous. A bit of mash and some peas and they were an easy, lazy meal. They disappeared around the time that hydrogenated oils were being removed from food, so maybe they couldn’t produce anything similar with other oils.

Beanfeast lentil casserole. I think that was the name of it. Not the bolognese one anyway. I used to chuck potatoes and carrots in and it was delicious. The spicy root vegetable stew on BBC Good Food is along the same lines. It’s lovely too.

The Brannigan's crisps - beef and mustard flavour. GORGEOUS.

murasaki · 04/05/2026 15:01

Dark chocolate hobnobs are sadly missed.

Heinz tinned potato salad and vegetable salad.
Smedley's ready to bake sausage rolls, in a tin.
Campbell's tinned meatballs in onion gravy.

Yep - I've remembered that entire jingle ever since, too!

Morethanthis71 · 04/05/2026 15:03

And Entemanns cakes. Any of them but in particular the carrot cake, sorely missed at every event.

Proper Ribena and old school panda cherryade.
cannot get anything that doesn’t taste fake anymore!

You can buy proper Ribena from Denmark. Expensive but so worth it. I treat myself to 6 bottles a year and make it last!

Weirdconditionaltense · 04/05/2026 15:03

Has anyone yet said the Texan bar. Chocoltae covered nougat bar. Surely is a mighty fine chew,

Fuse bars. Why did they get rid of them???

Did you ever have a Fuse Easter egg? The egg was entirely Fuse. 🤤

A quick search on Amazon brings up results but probably expensive and not like the OG...love me a cheese ball though mind, readily available (but I know not the same!!) Yes those garlic bread things were amazing, even if they were for the "grown ups" haha
