Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

'Tobacco' it came in a pouch and was brown strands, I think it tasted like coconut. Jubblies', Mintolas, they maybe still make those though, penny wafers, and those packets of sweet, multicoloured rice crispy like things, I think they were called Rainbow drops?

yup, sweet tobacco. I hated coconut so never bought it.

GellerYeller · 04/05/2026 20:37

In my youth I loved a can of Britvic lime Citrus Spring. And Schweppes blackcurrant cordial like the pubs used to use!
Does anyone remember bacon Fries? In a pink newspaper printed pack. With the texture of chipsticks?

I third potato puffs! Also Mars Delights, Chicago Town lasagne that was chilli con carne mince and had nachos on the top and Asda used to sell (it wasnt Asda branded but I can’t remember the brand) Thai noodles in the freezer section in foil bags that were absolutely delicious!

Sainsbury's did a chilli con carne lasagne with nachos on top back in the 80s, it was delicious.

You still get rainbow drops my 20 year old son loves them and I got him some for his birthday

Toasted coconut Toblerone bars - especially the giant ones you buy in duty free.

Tesco’s smoked hummus - there are other brands doing smoked hummus, but none as nice as the Tesco one - I could have lived on that.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/05/2026 20:44

Oh - and Boots Catarrh Cough Mixture - basically sugar syrup that tasted of creosote - I know it sounds atrocious, and I’m sure it didn’t really do much, but I loved the taste.

AInightingale · 04/05/2026 20:45

Anyone remember a chocolate bar (80s) with a pale yellow honeycomb-like filling, a bit like a Crunchie but far lighter and nicer, and quite cheap. The wrapper was blue, yellow and red I think. Loved those.

momtoboys · 04/05/2026 20:47

I remember those!

Sweets made to look like tobacco products
Sweetie fags with the red tip
Chocolate fags that came in a soft pack and looked like a real cig.
Can't imagine that now somehow.

Timbrelltime · 04/05/2026 20:48

I have been trying to remember my favourite and it’s taken me to page 17 - Phinneas Fogg again but mine were the Pastrami Bagel Chips ….super savoury tasty treats that were so rock hard my dentist was extremely happy🥴.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/05/2026 20:51

I loved the chocolate cigarettes, @JoyLoveJoyInOrbitNsoul!

God, I could go for a Secret Bar. Or a Sprira. I don’t know why having chocolate in different shapes makes it taste better but it just does.

Not sure if this counts as discontinued but I wish they would bring back the old Feast ice creams with proper chocolate in the middle. I bought some recently on a whim and whatever that is in the middle isn’t chocolate. You used to to be able to eat all the ice cream and still have solid chocolate in the middle, now it’s just chocolate flavour mush.

Exactly. On all fronts. That spiral choc bar was special. Just as a flake is special. Shape seems critical.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 04/05/2026 19:24

Oh yes! They were little puffy things but not like rice crispies.
I saw a quote about Thorntons. Just about everything. Boxes of toffee in different flavours with.random sized chunks. Do you know they are uniform sized and individually wrapped? And taste awful. Cream mice. And continentals...I'd buy a quarter on.a friday night, eat some on.the bus then the rest id share with mum and dad. I used to be given the continental casket for special occasions- solid chocolate base, nougat walls and filled with continentals.

I remember that casket from Thornton, it was delicious.

Was it Golden Nuggets? Can you still buy Golden Grahams? I’d forgotten those!

Yes!!!! Golden nuggets!! That's what they were!

Ooh ice magic the stuff which went onto ice cream as a thick chocolate sauce and went solid as soon as it hit the ice cream.

The same happens if you pour melted chocolate onto ice cream

LuckyManifestations · 04/05/2026 20:56

Raspberry Angel Delight

Dairy Milk before the palm oil.

You also used to get "smokers sets" made of cheap chocolate moulded into pipes, cigars, ashtrays and so on and wrapped in printed foil.....unthinkable now. This from X

The Scottish version was Fergusade. It was worth being ill just to have a glass.

I'm so glad someone else remembers this !!! DH is English and thinks I made this up and couldn't possibly be real. ! It was great.

Unicornrainbow3 · 04/05/2026 21:04

Ready salted chip sticks im still fuming

SpanglesPacersandFruityPolos · 04/05/2026 21:07

Lilt.

Screwballs I think they were called - a plastic cone with a ball of chewing gum on the bottom and ice cream on top. Only from an ice-cream can. The last time I saw one of those was in the 1990s, when I spotted a poor squirrel with one of the cones stuck on its head.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/05/2026 21:09

Previous posters mentioning Thorntons have reminded me of their chocolate toffee - not ordinary toffee coated in chocolate, but chocolate flavour toffee - I loved it, and they haven’t done it for a decade now. Probably for the best, given my waistline is more of an equator now! 😂

mummy3uk · 04/05/2026 21:10

I enjoyed fruit allsorts. I HATE licorice so the fruit ones were amazing to me. I was born in 91 but theres been a few things that have gone that I once enjoyed.
Dark chocolate bounty - I love the bounty from the christmas chocs!
The snowy flake I think it was.
Some one mentioned laughing cow squares - that was only recent wasnt it? Knowing my way of viewing passing of time it was probably 10-15 years ago though. Seriously strong used to make them too but not seen those for years either. They were handy instead of opening a big tub.
