Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

1000 replies

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 13:40

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

Those and the Californian Corn Chips...God I miss both so much!

Spiras were good..and Mint Wispas!

Potato Puffs

Yes! Someone else who remembers them!

I would also like to add, boddingtons and pickle flavour cheddar to the list

I'm sure when Pot Noodles first came out (mid 80s maybe?) there was a cheese and tomato one. Bloody lovely!

And I still mourn the red Bounty bar...

Also, was there a cereal consisting of little balls? A bit like Golden Grahams, maybe a precursor to those.

Edited

Was it Golden Nuggets? Can you still buy Golden Grahams? I’d forgotten those!

My Sainsbury's stopped selling Florentines in their bakery, I had one every time I went.
Sainsbury's fragrant Thai base, I used it to make pork mince Thai style which my 7 year old loved as it wasn't too spicy.
Lidl steak seasoning
Asda wholegrain mustard mayo

> Sainsbury's fragrant Thai base
My sainos still has it, and you can get it if you order online

Viscount biscuits,yo yo,club biscuits thick chocolate to be nibbles and biscuit to munch.
Jaffa cakes with the proper orangey bit in the middle
Burtons puffs all flavours. All 70s memories.

My mum used to keep a tin of biscuits for snacks when we got home from school, and there was a definite hierarchy - Wagon Wheels were like winning the lottery, and Viscounts, Yo Yos and Clubs were elite, as were Tunnocks caramel wafers (or more usually the Sainsbury’s dupes).

Blue Riband were next, but they barely touched the sides so you’d always be trying to wrangle another one. And sometimes it’d be the Biscuit Tin of Sadness if you opened it and the only things in there were Penguins (nicest thing about them was the coloured foil) or, worse, custard creams 😭 - such a sinking feeling of disappointment!

Spangles - they were a roll of square fruit hard boiled sweets that looked like Tunes cough sweets. I had them in the 70s as a kid. Similarly, fruit polos.

when I was a teenager I worked in McDonalds at weekends and they used to do a chocolate glaze ring doughnut and root beer. I miss those!

bumblebee3122 · 04/05/2026 20:21

I bought some Feasts on our shopping this week and theyve changed the recipe so it doesn't even taste like a feast anymore. They swapped the layer of choc ice cream with vanilla ice cream.

Not quite the same as missing discontinued items but frustrating

Whenever there is a thread like this I go straight to pining for ready salted potato triangles. Think last had them about 20 years ago then they just disappeared. And original recipe original lucozade. They ruined it about 10 years ago.

OMG Yes!!!

TheBookShelf · 04/05/2026 20:24

Gutted at the sneaky discontinuing of Gentleman's Relish while my back was turned. The sadness.

SantiagoShaming · 04/05/2026 20:25

Spira, Secret and red Bounty.

Salt and vinegar Quavers.

M&S chocolate covered cornflakes that came in a bag on the till end caps, haven’t seen those since 2002ish but I ate loads of them!

Thornton’s bags of chocolate covered Special Toffee.

And Morrison’s used to do a pasta ready meal that was a chicken/cheese/red pepper Alfredo sort of deal that I used to buy for work lunch once a week back in 2004 or so. I’ve got a close-ish homemade replica but it’s not quite the same.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/05/2026 20:26

ConstanzeMozart · 04/05/2026 14:51

Romany biscuits. Chocolate cream sandwich things. Rich as fuck.
Biarritz bars. Chunky chocolate with crunchy mint bits. Think they did an orange one too, but the chocolate ones had my heart.
Piglets. Crisps that were just basically a bubble like you get in ordinary crisps, with a tiny pig's head, feet and tail. Obviously bacon flavoured. You could stand them up on the sofa arm.

Anyone remember those chocolate sweetie things, I think you used to get them as part of a 10p mix, in tiny foil cupcake-style cups? The cups came in different shiny pastel colours and the sweetie was a lump of chocolate in the shape of a mini cupcake, and had a really odd but delicious 'cold' feel and taste to it (if taste is the word; it's hard to describe – I just mean they seemed cold when you ate them). They weren't called iced gems, but it was something like that.

Much more recently, in Whole Foods, gluten-free (I know gf is usually horrible but these aren't) millionaire's shortbread type things, but with (I think) dates in the filling as well. Seriously addictive, and you could kid yourself they were healthy.

You can still get the chocolate cups in traditional sweet shops.lve seen them in Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe.

Dark chocolate bounty- the red one 😭

Came here to say exactly this!!

Was literally just looking online for them today and they're nowhere - they were so, so, good I WILL NOT BE TAKING QUESTIONS AT THIS TIME.

Wiseplumant · 04/05/2026 20:34

'Tobacco' it came in a pouch and was brown strands, I think it tasted like coconut. Jubblies', Mintolas, they maybe still make those though, penny wafers, and those packets of sweet, multicoloured rice crispy like things, I think they were called Rainbow drops?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/05/2026 20:34

FadedRed · 04/05/2026 15:32

Tesco’s have the proper chip-sticks at about £1 for a large bag, my favourite.

Edited

Theyre the shard of potato style crisps. The maize ones are only available in salt and vinegar

godmum56 · 04/05/2026 20:35

@ConstanzeMozart I think the "cold" thing was because they had glucose powder in them. I had a phase in puberty when my blood sugar used to drop like a stone, no idea why and docs never found anything but for a couple of years, I used to have to carry glucose tablets around with me. They have the same coldness thing.
On from those little cups, does anyone remember a sweet in a tiny coneshaped plastic cup/glass....by tiny I mean around an inch and a half high with a tiny spoon linked to the cup. The cup was filled with a solid creme in laters, chocolate pink and white. I am doing up an old dollhouse now and collecting miniature things....wish I had kept some of the cups....
