what is the craze for taking y our young dc to the shops in their pyjamas?
bad enough that they drive there but walking down the high street in pyjamas,
it looks appalling.
i just saw a man going past my house, he had been to the shops, and i thought, i bet he didnt wash before he went to the shops, next thing a woman coming up the road with 3 dc in their pjyamas

"smelly" is just an adjective, isn't it?

Yep it’s lazy and common.

If they can’t be bothered to be dressed in public, I wonder what the inside of their houses are like.

What a bizarre comment. I don’t wear pyjamas, I sleep in slouchy t-shirt. If I am having a day in the house, I wear a slouchy t-shirt. I shower at night so it may or may not be the same slouchy t-shirt, depends how dirty it gets in the day/night. If I’m nipping to the shop, I’m not about to go and get “properly” dressed for a ten minute trip. My house is clean and tidy because my dressing habits have absolutely nothing to do with my ability to do housework.

Loulou4022 · 04/05/2026 09:50

I live near a school and every morning one mum always walks past in her pyjamas and dressing gown!
For what it’s worth I wear leggings and a t shirt instead of pyjamas so if I can’t be arsed to get dressed it still looks like I have! Throw on a rather trendy looking changing robe and I actually look cool 🤣 that’s a personal joke as someone I work with calls people who wear them anywhere but the beach ‘changing robe wan&ers’ 🤣

Bananalanacake · 04/05/2026 09:51

When I fly first class with Lufthansa they give you pyjamas, these are plain black trousers and a maroon t shirt so more like every day lounge wear. I wear the trousers all the time, elasticated waist and pockets, very comfortable, I'm a SAHM so no office to go to. I wouldn't get away with blue fluffy Percy pig pyjamas for the supermarket shop.

plsdontlookatme · 04/05/2026 09:51

As long as people aren't rude, obnoxious, or smelly, I really don't care how they look or what they're wearing.

@BH90210
a nasty bitch now?
wow,
just stating facts, he does smell, that is the truth,

you are very judgmental

Poor guy, what else do you know about him?

NoahVale · 04/05/2026 09:17

i wasnt sitting, i was standing, doing the washing up, i grow plants so people can't see to pass judgement,

Edited

Ah ha, sensible. You can judge them but not the other way round.

Honestly I just don't pay attention to this type thing. Clothing is to stop people from indecently exposing themselves. As long as it does so I don't care if it's pyjamas or a Donald duck costume.

PistachioTiramisu · 04/05/2026 09:53

It's just laziness - pure and simple. Another example of how our country is going to the dogs with standards dropping everywhere. Whatever happened to pride, self-respect and manners?

plsdontlookatme · 04/05/2026 09:53

I don't really understand the problem with looking common. If I go to the supermarket in PJs then people might not be instantly reassured that I'm actually very well-spoken and have a degree - I'm sure I can live with that.

GimmieABreakOr3 · 04/05/2026 09:54

I detest people who go out in their pyjamas, children included.

We went on a hike last week and me and the smallest took a tumble and ended up in the river.

We had a hrs drive home so when we were back at the car I changed them into some pj's from the charity shop bag that was in the boot.

We stopped at the shop on the way home and the child was not only in pj's, they were also way too small🤣

It was not a fun day.

At least you know you were judged.lol

ForeverTheOptomist · 04/05/2026 09:55

A dr/consultant friend told me the other day that her partner regularly tells her off for going to the supermarket in her PJs. I have to admit that it's not my thing, and I think it slovenly. However, I will hold my hand up in shame and say that I did go to the (very close by) garage recently in my pjs (but with a big coat over them, and I was clean!).

Great to see the results of the vote coming in OP! Enjoy your BH Monday! And look out of the window as much as you wish. I don't know why people are picking on you for doing this when they seem to be spending their lives on MN.

mixedcereal · 04/05/2026 09:55

I take my 3 year old to the shop on a weekend morning in her PJs to do the “breakfast run”

how sad that people have nothing better to do than be judgemental

NoahVale · 04/05/2026 09:57

these particularly dc were older than 3,
i wouldnt pass judgement on a 3 year old

You seem to be over-invested in what other people are doing.

That's right. Its called building a decent society.

PollyBell · 04/05/2026 09:58

So they could have slept in their normal clothes and gone to the shops or go to the shops in pyjamas?

Or wear a sloppy tshirt and stained tracksuit bottoms or clean looking pyjamas?

Who are we to judge what is acceptable or not?

Yes it is just an adjective. But when you look at it in the context of the OP it is very unkind.

She saw him walking past her house “and thought, I bet he didn’t wash before he went to the shops. “

Which was irrelevant to the PJs question anyway.

just shows the type of person OP is though

plsdontlookatme · 04/05/2026 09:58

I'm genuinely baffled by the strength of feeling around this! I can't imagine feeling anything other than perhaps very light amusement at the sight of a family in pyjamas in the supermarket? I presume to some extent it's a class thing.

Pyjamas aren't even dirty - outside clothes are much more likely to be dirty!

WhatAMarvelousTune · 04/05/2026 09:58

YABVU to call it a “craze”.

How young are the children? I have a 3 yr old and while I’ve never taken her out in actual pyjamas, her pyjamas are not really different to her daytime clothes in any meaningful way - soft leggings and a t shirt. They’re sold as pyjamas but tbh if she got dressed and chose a pj top instead of a regular one, I’m not completely sure I’d notice. TBH even my 6 year old is the same - last night she wore a short sleeved Frozen pj top. She has similar looking things sold as daytime clothes.

Owly11 · 04/05/2026 09:58

So many questions, so few answers. What is the breakfast run, why do people go out in their PJs and why is it not ok to describe someone as smelly and unclean. Are we all supposed to pretend we don't notice other people? It's polite to be dressed and clean in public as far as is possible.

MermaidofRye · 04/05/2026 09:57

How does mandating the wearing of outside clothes to the supermarket better society?

That is rather unkind of you.
You don't know what is going on in his life or anything. Honestly you don't exactly come across as a nice person at all. Also who knows that what that mum went through this morning. Maybe they ran out of milk and she just was over it all. Im actually disgusted you took the time to shame others on here.

I 'm sorry I don't agree that outdoor clothes are more likely to be dirty. People wear pyjamas next to their skin, most likely with nothing underneath. To me that is much 'dirtier' than wearing a coat/jacket over your normal clothes. Ugh - not nice.

plsdontlookatme · 04/05/2026 10:00

If someone smelled, I'd describe them as smelly. I probably wouldn't cast judgement on someone for wearing pyjamas or assume that someone wearing pyjamas was smelly just because they were wearing pyjamas.

CinemaDressing · 04/05/2026 10:01

Is it just our country whose standards in every area are lower than low? Or is this going on everywhere?
