Well, not long to wait guys!

keepswimming38 · 03/05/2026 08:04

@Hallowedturfi voted Labour in the last GE, I will vote Labour next week and in a few years time I will probably vote Labour. Not everyone’s political views swing about like pants on the washing line. I won’t be voting Green because their leader seems inexperienced and flimsy, he’s pushing Hannah whatsername at any opportunity and as smiley as she is she’s also totally inexperienced. Tories are dust, they did that to themselves. In a trillion years I would never vote Reform, however I’m happy to watch a few get in in other areas and have meltdowns. We need that before the next GE.

You do realise these are local elections for councillors not MPs and only some of the country are involved. 😆

FinchiePink · 03/05/2026 08:09

I'm sure there will be Labour losses, but I don't think it's going to be the bloodbath many seem to be hoping for. Turnouts for local elections are notoriously low. Maybe I'm wrong and lots of non-labour voters will turn out in fury, but we'll see

Absolutely this. Reform showing how awful they are at a local level and imploding further will be beneficial to all other parties including Labour long term. The Tories don’t even factor long term.

The issue here is that Labour voters may stay at home if they're disillusioned. A low turnout doesn't mean Labour can't suffer huge losses.

Of course.

And you do realise that a drubbing in both the local elections, and the devolved regions, will doubtless have wider consequences for Starmer and this government?

Theolittle · 03/05/2026 08:27

MsGreying · 02/05/2026 19:23

Councils are toast.

Gold plated pensions for the top dogs means bankruptcy sooner or later.

They have too many bills and not enough money.
Adult social care costs a fortune. Our council has tried shutting a service to outrage from the people who send family there.

I can't pay more tax and I don't want to.
Something has to give.

This is the real crux of the problem. Everyone wants better services but most don’t want to pay more tax. The cost of state pension and nhs is going up and up because the older population is getting bigger and bigger

Councils and government are having to take really tough decisions, they’re not doing it to annoy people!

Because there's nothing in the post to say that poster isn't well aware of that. She is clearly saying we won't need to wait long to see the results of the '26 local elections. (And the Senedd and Scottish Parliament elections)

Not to the extent some seem to believe. Also experiencing the nonsense and lies from Reform close to home will be most beneficial for Labour long term. We’re some way off a general election.

The Tories are history and don’t even factor long term.

ACynicalDad · 03/05/2026 08:28

Our place has been laboured for 50 years they have almost all the seats on the council, sadly I think they’ll just scrape it, but hope not.

In which case why are you going on about the Tories’ time in office at Westminster?

(Although, since you’re going back 24 years of ‘terrible’ government that includes much of Blair and all of Brown.)

Absolutely but they can’t be honest as the majority don’t want to hear it

I am not certain how you can make such assertions, but, as I say, we will not have long to wait.

Evidently, the political chess pieces are falling rapidly - this is data and news flow-led, not wishful thinking.

Theolittle · 03/05/2026 08:32

I’ll be voting labour to support Kier Starmer because he’s the only sensible, adult, non-populist PM available, in his party or any other. If the left get in it’ll be a disaster, if the right get in it’ll be a disaster. We need centrist and practical decisions. Loving the green push too- hope for the future for cheaper bills and energy security. He’s not perfect but he’s not as bad as our mainly right wing press are constantly pushing

It isn't always about a change of political views; people vote tactically as well: https://electoral-reform.org.uk/why-are-voters-switching-parties-more-than-ever/

I'm not sure that blindly sticking to one party is much of a badge of honour really. It's funny that I've seen Labour voters on here use it as a way to insult Tory voters ('they'd vote for a pig with a blue rosette' type comments). Yet, apparently, it's a good thing to always vote Labour without considering their, and other parties', manifestos.

Why are voters switching parties more than ever?

We recently published our in-depth report on the 2024 General Election, A System Out of Step. Our polling during the General Election not only revealed the extent of tactical voting und

Why not to the extent predicted? Some on here thought Labour would win G&D too.

Wales looks particularly bad for them.

Labour are the incumbents, so I do not understand the obsession with Reform and the Conservatives.

The voting ‘delta’ is most notable for Labour (in terms of losses) - in Scotland, Wales, and England.

I can link YouGov or others, or you can search yourself.

God yes, if Labour get more than 14% of the vote share in Wales, I'd be amazed.

Who doesn't have time to vote when you can make a postal votes if you can manage to make it to a polling station for 2 minutes between 7am and 10pm?

Edited

Time to think ahead perhaps as you know you will not be at home on polling day and can choose a postal vote. PS I will not be voting reform - would vote for labour if a general election but as it is bins, potholes and sports centres I vote for people who live locally

I think you have misunderstood my post there. I've always voted.
