Pretend you're swallowing a big piece of meat.

Have been to the hospital for a Gastroscopy. Consultant came to have a chat before the procedure, just him and I in the little room.
He explained what would be happening and said " as the tube goes down, pretend you're swallowing a big piece of meat".

I was nervous about the procedure and once it was done, I was chatting to a male friend and mentioned the comment above.
Friend says to report him as that's unacceptable language from a professional and thinks it was a sexual innuendo.

Also thinks it would have been inappropriate to a vegan or someone with eating issues.

YABU : It was an innocent remark.
YANBU: Dirty minded consultant.

Ridiculous! Nothing about that is offensive, your friend is seeing innuendo where none exists, just to stir up drama.

TheLemonLemur · 01/05/2026 18:47

I wish consultant had told me that before mine it would have given me an idea what to expect. Why are you asking are you doubting your opinion or wondering if you can make a complaint?? If you weren't bothered about the comment trust your judgement and tell your friend to stop being ridiculous

youalright · 01/05/2026 18:49

Insulting to a vegan 🤣🤣🤣

properidiot · 01/05/2026 18:50

Upsetting vegans 🙄 Bloody hell I sometimes despair with the world and some people within it ...

Your friend is an idiot

Alittlefrustrated · 01/05/2026 18:51

I presume you are male too OP. Bored?

MosquitoFace · 01/05/2026 18:51

Imagine the resource and time responding and dealing with these types of complaints (absolute morons)!

KilkennyCats · 01/05/2026 18:51

Stop your bloody nonsense, op. Seriously 🙄

Beachtastic · 01/05/2026 18:53

Yeah, right...

MrsOni · 01/05/2026 18:56

Report it. I am 100% sure he meant for you to think about swallowing a massive, massive cock.

Use those exact words when you report it.

choccytime · 01/05/2026 18:59

🙄

Statsquestion1 · 01/05/2026 19:00

Hang on….you were awake??!!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/05/2026 19:02

LaburnumAnagyroides · 01/05/2026 17:29

Your friend is the one who sexualised it. The consultant was just trying to explain the action he wanted you to replicate.

This. The woman who prepped me for my recent gastroscopy used precisely the same phrase.

desperatemum1234 · 01/05/2026 19:06

Your friend is demented.

CurlewKate · 01/05/2026 19:08

Probably better if he’d said a big piece of apple, or potato or something… I’m a carnivore, and I think I’d find the “big piece of meat” a bit yuck. But the sexual interpretation is bonkers.

StephensLass1977 · 01/05/2026 19:09

Report?

Way to try and ruin someone's life over absolutely nothing.

What a couple of drama queens you both are.

Mumandcarer80 · 01/05/2026 19:11

BiteSizedLife · 01/05/2026 17:36

Going against the grain here but it could be a bit sleazy... it depends who says it if you know what I mean.

Why meat? Why not big piece of food?

Plumbers and Physiotherapists have definitely said "innocent" things to me before that were sleazy from them but would have been totally innocent if anyone else said them

Edited

probably because the texture of meat is quite chewy it’s different to swallowing something like mash potato with chewing.-The tube will have a similar texture to meat.

inickedthisname · 01/05/2026 19:15

Your friend has a dirty mind… and appears to be a member of the “let’s take offence on behalf of minority-groups” brigade.

I’m a vegetarian and I wouldn’t think twice about this analogy - he’s trying to explain you’re going to feel like you’re swallowing something quite big and chunky. Of course, on top of being vegetarian I chew my food but I can still understand what he means.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 01/05/2026 19:15

🙄

Zanatdy · 01/05/2026 19:15

Oh FFS. What would be the point in reporting, my friend thinks he was being rude. Doctor - I meant a piece of steak. End of.

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 01/05/2026 19:15

Drip feed alert, not NHS but point taken still.
I was doubting myself as friend said imagine him saying it to a young girl.

It did make me think twice hence asking.

As a veteran of multiple endocopies, the texture is nothing like meat. It's like exactly what it is - having a plastic tube put down your throat, which is bloody horrible.

No doubt the doctor thinks the 'just like eating meat' idea will relax and reassure patients. It might if they've never had one before, but the moment that tube gets in there, they'll be unpleasantly disillusioned.

Krevlornswath · 01/05/2026 19:16

Your friend sounds like an idiot who enjoys the drama. Offensive to vegans to reference that meat exists? laughably foolish. OP it sounds like whatever was used to support the very necessary action of swallowing the camera required for the procedure, your puerile minded friend would have found fault with it.

SmashThePatriarchy · 01/05/2026 19:20

For God sake.
