Pretend you're swallowing a big piece of meat.

Have been to the hospital for a Gastroscopy. Consultant came to have a chat before the procedure, just him and I in the little room.
He explained what would be happening and said " as the tube goes down, pretend you're swallowing a big piece of meat".

I was nervous about the procedure and once it was done, I was chatting to a male friend and mentioned the comment above.
Friend says to report him as that's unacceptable language from a professional and thinks it was a sexual innuendo.

Also thinks it would have been inappropriate to a vegan or someone with eating issues.

YABU : It was an innocent remark.
YANBU: Dirty minded consultant.

If you or your friend think you swallow anything then you guys are doing it wrong! 😅. It doesn’t even make any sense to think it could be an innuendo

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 03/05/2026 04:28

Meat is now so expensive. And would need to imagine what swallowing a large piece would be like.

Many people can't afford to buy it. And rumour has it.Instead of eating it.They just sit gulping and salivating in groups and pretend they have just eaten a really thick juicy steak.

Not in the slightest bit surprised. Comment was taken as sexual innuendo by someone who has Woke or PC Hyper Activity Disorder.

Please get a life.

Kokonimater · 03/05/2026 04:43

This is silly.

FFS get a grip!

What on, the piece of meat?
😉😁😁.

Shudupayaface · 03/05/2026 08:05

Both are tube shaped, go down your throat and you don't chew. 🙄

Students2 · 03/05/2026 08:29

I have had 10 plus endoscopes (I have had so many I can not remember how many) and I find the comment about meat very odd so I am not surprised your friend did too.

SALaw · 03/05/2026 08:30

Jesus

ItsJustMeMyself · 03/05/2026 08:31

Is this some kind of wind up? Are you looking for ways to be offended? Vegans can't even hear the word "meat" without crying? Is that what you're saying? Your minimising true SA with a phrase in a medical profession? What in the world...

AJLOAL · 03/05/2026 11:01

A lot of responses, including OP's focus on the anaesthetic offered not to medical professionals language. 🙄
Such wokeism.

LienekeS · 03/05/2026 11:44

Your friend is totally ridiculous. I worked in that department and yes that is what is being said. People like her are a huge problem in today’s society.

MarriedTwiceOneGrownUpDaughter · 03/05/2026 12:40

Are people here deliberately pretending not to understand, to gaslight the OP? No wonder women are afraid to report sexual harassment or even confide in other women.

And the most ridiculous response! Are you the OPs weirdo mate?!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/05/2026 14:24

"Digestive, suggestive. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean?"

Or as someone once put it: everything's either concave or -vex, so whatever you dream will be something with sex. (I think this may be one of Piet Hein's Grooks.)

The post was about the language, moved on to anaesthetic which I commented on.

True, agree or disagree, there are ways to put one's point across without insults.

I remember at 16 being told by a male doctor to always be vigilant when being seen alone by a male doctor.
He could have been advising innocently, but according to some on here, he must have a dirty mind if that's what he thinks of other doctors.

Hang on….you were awake??!!

Awake as thought it was a light procedure, lesson learnt as it wasn't.

MoonWoman69 · 04/05/2026 12:43

I was awake during mine, just had numbing spray in my throat. Wasn't a problem at all once they'd got the camera down past my gag reflex. It's not exactly open heart surgery without anaesthetic is it?! 🙄

Me too, its fine as long as you stay calm. In fact I actually worked in the department where I had mine and was done before the list started by my colleagues. It was displayed on a big tv screen so I've actually seen inside my own stomach 😅

I've also seen my own cervix, but that's another story 😁

OP, your friend is an idiot and you need to have a serious word with yourself for listening to them.

MoonWoman69 · 04/05/2026 19:54

@Additup I watched all of mine too, up and down! And weirdly, I've seen the inside of my mates womb! All cobwebby, it was weird! Only because she wanted me there, so that she could break my hand, as she wouldn't have an anaesthetic! She was having fertility investigations. And as I wasn't at the business end, I was seated with the screen in front of me! So I saw my godson when he was the size of half a baked bean, because it turned out she was actually pregnant. I told her what I'd seen afterwards, the consultant never mentioned it at the time. And I said I reckoned she was pregnant! Turned out she was!

So because it was ok for you, everyone else who's said it wasn't is wrong?

People have different pain/discomfort thresholds.

MarriedTwiceOneGrownUpDaughter · 05/05/2026 10:05

OP: I think it was a waste of your time posting this on Mumsnet (unless you're studying psychology, as I am, in which case it's an excellent case study into gaslighting, group behavioural dynamics, victim-blaming and how misogyny is enabled by women). Moving forward, you need to report this creep. I wouldn't waste time going to the medical council; it could take years to investigate and meanwhile he could do much worse - the gross sexual innuendo is pervy enough, the fact that he's speaking like this to a random patient with obviously no fear of being reprimanded by his seniors is actually more disturbing: he feels invincible, untouchable (ironically). What is he doing in secret if this is how he speaks openly? What might he do to a very vulnerable patient? Report him in confidence (it's called a Protected Disclosure and there's no risk that you'll be sued, or punished by his colleagues - even if they're enabling him / turning a blind eye, they will quickly distance themselves from him once they know he's under investigation). Go to the police. Just tell them what he said to you, a female patient.

Squirrel60 · 05/05/2026 10:52

You ARE being unreasonable. I've never had a Gastro, have no idea of what happens, but it sounds like the doctor was just telling you how it would feel when the tube goes down your throat. I'd much rather he tells me that, out straight, instead of not saying anything at all, which is what has happened when I'd had to have tubes up my nose, medics not explained what it feels like and just basically shoved them up there, it's soddin' awful!

Your friend is the one who is wrong and was the one sexualizing it. Blame him, not the doctor!
