to think more people just have zero self-discipline now?

It genuinely feels like self-discipline has gone out the window lately.

So much is instant. Food, shopping, entertainment, attention. A lot of people so are not able to just sit with something uncomfortable anymore or stick at anything that requires effort. If something is a bit hard, boring or inconvenient it’s immediately abandoned. Diet? Too hard. Exercise? Can’t be bothered. Even basic stuff like replying to messages or turning up on time feels optional now.

Before anyone jumps in, yes life is stressful and people are busy, I get that. But that’s always been the case in different ways. It feels like the default response now is to avoid anything that requires a bit of discipline or delayed gratification.

Even kids, and I’m not blaming them, but they’re growing up in a world where everything is on demand. Patience and self-control aren’t being built in the same way.

I’m not saying everyone is like this. But the general attitude feels very “do what feels good right now” rather than “do what’s actually good for you long term”.

How "lately" do you mean? Because I'm in my 50s and I remember exactly the same complaints being made when I was in my teens.

I agree.

I’ve said the same over the years.

want something - order via app NOW!

pay for instant delivery.

Can’t be bothered to cook - Uber eats app!

I’ll be honest I can see why people do the instant gains because it does make life easier but I’ve resisted over the years because I enjoy delayed gratification because I grew up experiencing it.

No shit sherlock.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 01/05/2026 15:47

Yes. Including myself.

DuskOPorter · 01/05/2026 15:50

Is this how you are doing life yourself? It seems very outwardly focused on some ethereal people but I know plenty of people who are very disciplined with sport, personal goals, health etc. obviously plenty of people don’t focus on goals that way too but that is the way of the world.

Is looking up what people have said in the past your only hobby?

I have already name changed.

Where did I say I use deliveroo or ubereats? I have takeaways within walking distance and go myself. Maybe you need to do some more digging,

I agree. Some folk have no job, no routine in their lives. And wonder why they are depressed. It's a vicious circle. Then others are burnt out with everything they try to cram in. A happy medium would be better.

It does seem to be extremes I agree.

Mostly no. There are moments where I do go for the quick option where they have been emergency trips to A&E - a regular thing in my family unfortunately.

Instant gratification is a problem I agree . It leads to selfishness and as n inability to cope when it doesn't happen .

Then there are the dislike of questioning how it's made possible . Delivery people on shit contracts , warehouse operatives the same , poor quality goods produced by dodgy business practices .

And the bigger corporations trawling your accounts for information.

greatvisuals · 01/05/2026 16:18

Whoosh is brilliant though

Agreed. I have noticed people get really stressed when something doesn't happen instantly.

My whole life is navigating difficult things and sitting with being uncomfortable. I also have to be very disciplined or nothing would get done. My kids are instantly gratification hellians but that’s kids!

Because it’s there
Is the short answer

I am sure the rise in nail art is only possible because of dishwashers

In a world where a lot of us don’t have much money I can assure you our kids are having to be patient to have things. My teens get £20 a month and once that’s gone they have to wait and also save for anything bigger. I’ve been waiting years to be able to get to a level of spending I aspire to.
