AIBU to want politicans to be highly academically successful And have experience in running a business?

I'm so tired of these low grade politicians ruining our lives. They can lie (as Starmer exempifies), they don't need qualifications or experience to get the job. In inexplicable in other areas of life.

What a joke. But I suppose when its politicans like Lammy, Starmer, Reeves in charge, it won't ever change.

It's just another thread to bang on about Starmer and the current government. I'm sure people will be along to support the OP before too long. 🙄

Nope

But they need more people in parliament than just those prom privileged backgrounds which would not have anything in common with constituents

So SAHMs should be precluded from standing for election? Despite the fact that they have lived experience of millions of other people in the country, despite the fact that they might be incredibly bright and politically astute? But if they've never received a pay slip in their lives then they just written off? What a way not to value the contribution of mothers in society. I'm honestly appalled. I made that point about privilege myself further back in the thread and even made a book recommendation!

Someone needs to tell Nancy Pelosi that she never should have become Speaker of the House, given that she was a housewife for 20 years before she ran for congress at the age of 47...

Comprehension issue for you. He was my example of a liar.

No, it's a clarity issue for YOU if all you were saying was you believe him to be a liar - presumably you'll agree he should NOT be included in your 'not academically able' criterion?

You'll agree, similarly, that Reeves and Lammy shouldn't, either...? So your point in using them as examples was incorrect.

Lammy - master degree in law from Harvard and a Barrister - hardly uneducated.

Farage didn't go to University can we rule him out ?

Why do you refer to Farage? I do hope he is never PM, though the way Labour are going, they are certainly driving certain people to think voting Reform will help them.

Lammy was a barrister for about 3 minutes, totally useless. Not a suprise.

Catsandjkr · 30/04/2026 12:53

😂Of course you can't.

Would you care to expand on that?

ChocHotolate · 30/04/2026 12:54

The caliber of people you describe can attract a very large salary in the private sector. Public sector is relatively low paid compared to what these top people can be used to.
If we want the best we have to be prepared to pay for it, but the press kick up a stink at MP salary increases.
Until we pay more we will attract either older / retired individuals who want to give back and do good, or Will will attract substandards who can’t make it elsewhere

I mean Keir Starmer was a barrister and QC and head of some "department" or something not educated at all ! the great Boris Johnston lied through his teeth repeatedly and we won't mention Nigel farages whoppers and dodgy dealings.

Thundertoast · 30/04/2026 12:55

So what 'low grade politicians' were you referring to that are not educated how you see fit? Can you name some for us.

Indeed. It's almost as if 14 years of entirely inept Tory government never happened...

My comprehension isnt in question.

You're the one who wrote the OP, saying you wanted highly educated people as politicians; then derided multiple politicians who are all highly educated.

Kinda throws your whole argument in the fire that the ones youre moaning about are the type youre advocating.

We need high calibre people from all walks of life to be politicians.

However, the “run a business” line gets trotted out all the time, like starting and running a business confers some sort of mystical wisdom.

Some people who run businesses are fantastic. Some people who run businesses are truly dreadful at it.

If a person runs a successful business - they are capable. Business build jobs, opportunities, help build the economy. Without them we have no money. Lots of people just cannot understand this. They don't care where the money comes from, as long as they get it. Hence we're in this current mess - Labour seem to have zero undertstanding of economics.

I refer to Farage as the Title of your thread, the one you started says you want 'politicians' .

Farage is a politician!

Can you name a potential senior politician who could avoid credible allegations of lying?

Rhaidimiddim · 30/04/2026 13:01

Lammy is a Harvard-trained lawyer. Starmer is a lawyer. I don't think an academic background is important.

Being an MP used attract people from.all backgrounds who wanted to make a difference. Nowvit is a career, where you play the game and say/ do what you have to in order to advance in your career path.

Cheesipuff · 30/04/2026 13:01

I think we should have fewer who have only been in politics - I think it’s a degree in economics from Oxford then a low level political advisor then onwards and upwards - just good at being crafty and manipulating.

Plus a few engineers wouldn’t go amiss - HS2, OTT environmental legislation, ‘ooooo let’s make everyone buy electric cars’ ( even if we don’t have the power)🙄

Lammy was a barrister/attorney for 6 years - would you elaborate on your statement that he was "useless"?

Cheesipuff · 30/04/2026 13:03

Business people would at least have an idea how new legislation affects employees and owners

Bless Starmer lovers. Have you seen the poll - that usually gives you the truth about a question. Comments are often taken over by people with motives, like we see here.

And please don't waffle on about scientific polling - no polling is scientific. So I accept the MN one for now. It doesn't fit your narrative but here we are..

We're in "this current mess" because of 14 years of Tory ineptitude - it didn't just pop up when Labour took over.

Nigel Farage used to run a business which made £1.25m in profit last year. Doesn't make a good politician. In the same year he went to the US eight times and didn't hold a single surgery in Clacton. At this point I am not entirely convinced he even knows where Clacton is...

I do remember him allegedly using tax payers cash on a taxi from France to his holiday in Italy, and trying to con the taxi driver in the process.

Running a business will not be like running the country.

I want politicians with vision. With decent principles. Who believe in doing what is best for Britain. Who have good ideas and values. That support everyone. That build hope. Who communicates well internationally and domestically. That would govern for all. People with judgement.

I do not want someone whose experience is say running a hedge fund. They will not know at all how to manage Government. How to run a Department even at Ministerial level. It would be chaos.
