SHE LEAVES GAS ON REPEATEDLY FOR YEARS

heygirlsitsme · 29/04/2026 19:29

Hey guys I am asking about a close relative

what the hell could this be??

they for decades have been leaving gas on like every month, every few months. Sometimes even few times a week.

their daughter has bad ocd because she remembers since age 13 having to check gas after her

and it’s not just gas. Hot tools, plugged in iron, fire on.

like person living with them comes home, no one is home, that woman left for work and gas is on.

30 years they nearly burned down staff kitchen room in old workplace

when you tell them off about it they go, oh yes, sorry. Sorry. I’ll be more careful. Or quietly nod. But they keep doing same thing.

I don’t understand why it’s so hard to double check and be more careful if you know this about yourself.

what the hell could this be. I am starting to wonder if this is done on purpose because it’s so ridiculous

Second post wrote in the same strange way this evening I recognise the OPs writing. Must try harder....

TheDehumidifierNeedsEmptying · 29/04/2026 20:53

I know you said you wanted serious replies however at a point you have to seriously consider the fact that this person might just be an idiot.

heygirlsitsme · 29/04/2026 20:25

I see I’m getting very unserious and trolling replies

i don’t understand why. I understand this is very bizarre. This is a very disturbing situation.

if anyone has serious suggestion what this can be.

Some kind of mental illness or???

I would be very grateful

Edited

You're getting trolling responses because your post is all over the place. You've written in a bizarre style that requires readers to do a lot of work to understand what you mean and it comes across as disrespectful (or drunk) and pisses people off.

Take a moment to think about what you're trying to ask and, separately, what we might need to know to provide you with more sensible answers. And write in sentences. Then you'll get better responses.

We can't really guess at why she's doing it based on what you've told us. What does she say when you sit her down and ask? Does her behaviour on this tie in with other behaviours - either memory/attention based ones or selfishness?

(Also, on here, shouting in the title is basically the same as pinning a "kick me" note to your own back)

Butterme · 29/04/2026 20:55

It’s very worrying and I know a few people like this but are all undiagnosed.

If there are young kids in the house then I’d report her to adult social services but if not, then apart from trying to persuade them to get help, there’s not much you can do.

And the fact that she’s a teacher is irrelevant. I know many people who are incredibly professional and hard working but cannot cope with home life.
I don’t know if they burn out from work and so the home life drops or if the home life is too chaotic for them.

I’m similar to it.
I could easily work 15 hour shifts but having to tidy my room is like torture.

I remember reading about a head teacher of a private school who had years of professional experience and was one of the best.
He lived in a massive, expensive home in a really expensive area.
But he ate, slept, read etc all in his car on the driveway because he was a massive hoarder and couldn’t live in his home.

Papyrophile · 29/04/2026 20:56

I am happy that I am not paying for the gas bill!

Butterme · 29/04/2026 20:57

I’m not sure why you’re getting silly replies.

Your thread does not seem fake and it’s easy to work out what you mean.

Fireside10 · 29/04/2026 20:57

Why do you keep mentioning they're a teacher?

If you're genuinely concerned you should take them to a doctor. If a child is within the home you should report them to social services.

Recently?! That show started in 1987!

Are they pissed?

Some posters appear to be trying to be deliberately obtuse, pretending they don’t know what the OP means, presumably because of the way the post is written. I hate it when MN is like this.
Of course it could be written by AI, and yes, that’s annoying, but sometimes a poster may not be using English as their first language.

Backedoffhackedoff · 29/04/2026 21:01

youalright · 29/04/2026 20:48

I think rather then worrying about a diagnosis you need to focus on solutions

Solutions for the teacher? She isn’t going to listen to OPs bright ideas

I completely agree.

I don’t understand why some are being deliberately obtuse, as all it does it make them look stupid for not understanding.

OPs thread is easy to understand.

If they’re confused then why not just ask a question sincerely, instead of trying to bully OP because they’ve got nothing better to do with their lives.

Do you honestly believe people with ADHD are all the same??

CruCru · 29/04/2026 21:05

I’ve known a couple of people like this. One left her hair straighteners on overnight. Another was just … careless. She didn’t have any conditions that contributed to it, she was just careless and thoughtless. She set fire to an electrical kettle by putting it on the stove, wrecked a steamer I had by cooking rice in the water part, would cook and then leave pans / plates / cutlery for days. She would take cups of tea up to her bedroom but then, when we went to find some mugs, they would be there covered in green mould. She would wreck other people’s stuff and her own and then say that she didn’t care about “stuff”. But she’d never been taught to look after her stuff.

GingerBeverage · 29/04/2026 21:05

Can you talk to her family and find out if she was like this as a child/teen?

You are naturally focused on the dangerous things she is doing but have you noticed her leaving other things forgotten that aren’t dangerous?

Does she forget to lock her car or the house, lose objects, or miss appointments?

This or abusing drugs

MrsBoyTom · 29/04/2026 21:09

Someone in my family had this kind of behaviour and I was confused for years until I discovered that they were secretly drinking.

I would contact your local Fire Service for advice.

MaCheCazzo · 29/04/2026 21:15

I think I know what this is. Are they by any chance a teacher?

Loses stuff constantly!

lost thousands worth of stuff over the years

OP posts:
LizzieSiddal · 29/04/2026 21:21

I do this with the gas oven and hair straighteners. I’m not an alcoholic, on drugs or an idiot. Im dyslexic and think I have other issues, maybe ADD, but at 60 can’t be bothered to find out. My memory is atrocious and always has been.

So Ive changed to an induction hob and hair straighteners that switch themselves off if left on for too long. They’ve been a life changer.

I now just have to sort the other numerous things I get wrong every day. 🤔
