SHE LEAVES GAS ON REPEATEDLY FOR YEARS

heygirlsitsme · 29/04/2026 19:29

Hey guys I am asking about a close relative

what the hell could this be??

they for decades have been leaving gas on like every month, every few months. Sometimes even few times a week.

their daughter has bad ocd because she remembers since age 13 having to check gas after her

and it’s not just gas. Hot tools, plugged in iron, fire on.

like person living with them comes home, no one is home, that woman left for work and gas is on.

30 years they nearly burned down staff kitchen room in old workplace

when you tell them off about it they go, oh yes, sorry. Sorry. I’ll be more careful. Or quietly nod. But they keep doing same thing.

I don’t understand why it’s so hard to double check and be more careful if you know this about yourself.

what the hell could this be. I am starting to wonder if this is done on purpose because it’s so ridiculous

Rather than nagging, perhaps explain to them that if the house explodes/sets on fire due to THEIR negligence (if they’re not deceased, god forbid), then their home insurance will NOT pay out and they’ll not only be homeless but also likely left with tens of thousands of pounds to pay out for damage to neighbours’ homes/street damage if an explosion/loss of earnings for neighbours/heck, even the fire service sometimes invoice you for their services if it happens as a result of negligence (lived experience as similar happened to a family member). Perhaps the thought of losing everything, along with their home itself AND being slapped with a bill 10k+ might snap them back to reality???

l’m old and not really sure what a stove is, presume the oven? Is stove American?

You know very well what it is 🤨 Don’t be facetious

xxxlove · 29/04/2026 20:14

i would doubt such a person could keep a job, by the same means, she would forget to press send to an email or finisher her excel sheet or change the bed linen in the care home

purpleme12 · 29/04/2026 20:14

Has something happened recently?

It's a long time to only just be investigating this if it's been going on for decades...

Slightyamusedandsilly · 29/04/2026 20:17

they for decades have been leaving gas on

Are you saying that they have left the cooker/stove on for 20 (or more) years, without ever turning it off?

20 years of the stove on. Never off.

I think you're using exaggeration to create some sort of effect.

That’s the most bizarre thing that makes no sense

she is a teacher

Gas hobs. I call my (electric) hobs 'the stove'. I was born and raised in the UK. I hear a lot of Americans say cook top instead of stove though.

No you've said it three times.

😆

I see I’m getting very unserious and trolling replies

i don’t understand why. I understand this is very bizarre. This is a very disturbing situation.

if anyone has serious suggestion what this can be.

Some kind of mental illness or???

I would be very grateful

I am married to a super intellectual teacher. He leaves the kitchen kabinets doors open all the time, after using the kitchen all in a mess, leaves his keys and phones around and loses them 100s of times...might have left the gaz once or twice but I also have seen him having OCD in checking ....your teacher however is another level

AgentJohnson · 29/04/2026 20:27

Don’t waste your time trying to diagnose this person. I would just replace sockets with smart sockets. Then set up a routine so that when she leaves the house, every thing but the fridge is turned off automatically. The routine is geo fenced and triggered when her phone disconnects from the wifi. If I lived with this person I would insist on it.

She obviously doesn’t care change or she would have.

Lilmrsac · 29/04/2026 20:27

So in the 30 years this has been happening no one has thought to perhaps have a medical evaluation done for this person?

you seem overly involved yet not doing anything at all for the situation… whole thing seems a bit off

I mean I don’t know. this person lived abroad most of my life, I didn’t know them and they only been a close relative for only like few years to me. I learned about this recently.

i guess people tried getting them help but you can’t force them against their will? Or people just get the hell away from them thinking they are crazy. They also don’t really have any family or friends left

No-one can do anything if your relative doesn’t give a crap about it. I don’t know why you assume it’s an illness.

tbh if they’ve done this for decades without blowing up the property or starting a fire I suspect it’s not as bad as you think.

I don’t know why people are posting ideas to solve it, the person is hardly going to take advice

There’s definitely some mental illness going on somewhere.

Bluebells81 · 29/04/2026 20:37

My sister does this kind of thing all the time too. She is also a respected professional.
She tends to always do more than one thing at a time so it's always distracted and just moved on to the next task before finishing the first.
Always been a high achiever and had a thirst for knowledge. She just doesn't have any systems to finish tasks and switch stuff off.
Has her own house and lives on her own so it's her problem.

They started a few fires.

and They only haven’t blown up the property because relative living with them monitors them and checks

i believe it’s an illness because it’s not normal.

It’s my own curiosity what this can be and also maybe i could get this person help and treated if it’s something undiagnosed

I don't know what it could be as if it was adhd or dementia then she wouldn't be able to teach. I use to always have a fear id left my hairstraightners on so I use to take a photo before I went to work so I could look back and know I had unplugged them. Would post it notes or a leaving the house checklist work

youalright · 29/04/2026 20:48

I think rather then worrying about a diagnosis you need to focus on solutions
