AIBU to mention weight loss injections to an overweight male colleague?

Worked previously with this colleague in our early twenties and he was well built, but tall so not obviously overweight. We’ve now been working together in the same company for about 3 years and in the time I can’t help but see that he had put on considerable weight and is now probably in the morbidly obese range.

I know his wife to see but not really talk to (not that kind of work place). She has the look of a sporty fit slim type. He, like me, early 50s, teenage kids etc.

I know that speaking about weight issues to a spouse is mired in difficulty; from reading on threads here too that’s very much a no no. However I’m now on WLI myself after really struggling with my menopausal weight gain that led me to a bmi of over 30 and finding it so so hard to reverse the upward trend.

The reason I started? Speaking with female work colleagues who are also on mounjaro and had normalised it, plus coming on here and joining one of the many WLI threads.

This colleague is such a sweet guy, and I would just mention in passing that I’m on them - I would be subtle and kind but make it clear I’m available for advice without pushing it.

Reading the healthy life expectancy report out yesterday is prompting this.

or AIBU and only bring it up if he mentions his struggles (which he never does)

How rude.

YABU. How do you know he hasn't tried them and they didn't agree with him? I tried them, they were fine initially but the side effects were too much on both Mounjaro and Wegovy (I could just about deal with the constipation, but not the cripplingly painful frequent gallbaldder attacks out of nowhere, even after not eating any fatty food at all) so I had to stop them. Wish they worked for me like they seem to for others, but they don't. It might be similar for him.

Editing to add: the hairloss on Mounjaro was also horrendous, I lost what felt like half my hair very rapidly and it's growing back but it takes a long time!

Edited

Gosh, that’s unfortunate for you.

I don’t understand how so many people rave about them. I have tried everything and several different types yet my health is worsening! How is it that everyone on MN who tries them instantly snaps to a size 6 with no loose skin or stretch marks (which is always how it sounds!)

It’s not instant, it took me about a year to lose over 6 stone. BMI 32 down to 20, side 18 down to 8. And it took hard work, gym 5-6 days a week, watching what I ate, making sure I ate a clean and healthy diet, consuming my protein, protecting muscle. Been maintaining over a year and I went straight into body recomp to ensure I was fit and toned and rebuilt any muscle I lost along the way,

I did feel immediately better on them and irs sad the drugs didn’t agree with you, but that’s rare.

however, I’m not sure about your post, as it’s not possible to try several different kinds, there are only two.

Ozempic back in the day and now Mounjaro. Max doses and taken every week for several years. No result. So it’s not that it didn’t agree with me. It’s that it didn’t work.

I'm doing OK on ozempic but mounjaro did nothing for me. I had plateaued on oz so tried mj to see if I could trigger weight loss. Ha!

LoverofGladioli · Yesterday 03:00

Sorry havent time to RTFT, but i am cringing at what you are suggesting!
Please, no do not say this!

How would you have felt if someone in the office you didn’t know well came up to you and dropped that into the conversation, implying you could be a candidate for WLI? I’m sure you’d feel hurt and offended. Please don’t. He will be very aware of his size, he doesn’t need your judgment.

Several means more than 3. And ozempic is not licenced for weight loss in the uk it’s only diabetes. And mounjaro only came to market late 23. So just over two years.

nicewarmmess · Yesterday 07:05

I think the thing is, you don’t know if he struggles. He might be perfectly happy.

Did you really pick through my post to fact check and argue semantics? 🤣

I was prescribed Ozempic (as a diabetic) and was told it was for weight loss. Then it became hard to get hold of due to non diabetics being prescribed it for weight loss (which GPs were permitted to do) .

I took that for several (there’s that word again) years (it was licenced in 2019) until 2024. I was then moved onto Mounjaro and have taken that for the last 18 months.

Him- ‘Have you filed that report?’

You- ’WLI have saved my life’

Him- ’What is the next meeting about?’

You- ‘I’m feeling so much better on WLI!’

The only time to talk about it is if he asks!

Do not!!!! I found a lovely new hairdresser recently who was set up independently on her mothers property. Great conversation, fabulous cut, very reasonable price. Almost finished my blow dry and her mother came in and introduced herself, told me how she had lost 6 stone, using injections, and proceeded to interogate me on my height, weight and bmi. She didnt stop when I told her that I wasnt intetested and said she sounded like a rep for the company. Needless to say, I felt so uncomfortable that I will not be going back. Such a shame

Lostallhistory · Yesterday 17:03

Jesus op , have a word with yourself. You wouldn't go up to someone and suggest a different hairstyle for them just because you've had your hair cut.

CassandraWebb · Yesterday 19:56

I gained weight rapidly when I was prescribed steroids.
I thought some pretty murderous thoughts about the people who tried to gently hint things about diet /exercise.

You never know why someone has gained weight and it's none of your business

MyCottageGarden · Yesterday 19:58

People like you and attitudes like this (“trying to help”) are why so many overweight people commit suicide

How awful! It's beyond insulting when people assume anyone they perceive as needing to lose weight will be grateful for dieting advice. I do often wonder if some people on WLI who do this are chasing referral discounts, but it's obnoxious whatever the reason.

Like he hasn't already noticed he's obese?

Why is everyone so obsessed with jabs for weight loss?

If he mentions his weight to you, then gently tell him you're on injections, but if not, let him be. He's obviously seriously struggling to control his weight, probably feels bloody awful about it, and might well be trying to lose some.

Just leave him alone unless he asks your advice!
