AIBU to think it was rude they kept my misdelivered parcel?

Was expecting a parcel on Saturday. (Was a small package, in a padded envelope so could easily fit through letterbox, no signature required)

Didn’t get delivered. So I checked the tracking details online Sunday evening. Tracking details said it had been delivered at 09:30am Saturday. It had a photo of the delivery person handing it over. All you can see in the photo is the package, someone’s shoes and their driveway. Which had a particular unique pattern of paving.

It wasn’t my shoes, or my driveway.

I walked up and down my street trying the find the driveway. Found it. About 8 houses down.

Knocked on the door and luckily they answered. I said “Oh I’m just wondering if you have a parcel for number 60 please”. They said yes, and gave it me. No “sorry I was going to bring it round/post it through your letter box”.

I understand people are busy but they had my parcel for 30+ hours. I would have had no idea they had it unless I went out looking at everyone’s driveways.

Was this rude of them?

I WFH so often take in packages for neighbours.

I've always (correctly it seems) assumed the delivery company let the parcel owner know who took the parcel in and it's always been collected.

Same on the odd occasion a neighbour has taken a parcel in for me. I go and collect.

Size is irrelevant, I'm happy to help by saving a delivery being taken back to the depot but it wouldn't cross my mind to then post it into neighbour, especially if it's not a direct neighbour.

Imagine if it then goes missing / neighbours doesn't recieve it? Who becomes liable for it then?

TwelvePinkDolphins · 27/04/2026 19:54

I also don’t think it’s that usual for parcels to be delivered to a neighbour anymore?? Maybe I’m in the minority but I’ve never had one go to a neighbour in the almost 3 years I’ve lived here - they get taken back or left by my back door or in the shed. I’ve never been asked to take any parcels either. And I work from home so I’m in literally all day every day, I’d be a prime parcel taker 🤣

Snooks1971 · 27/04/2026 18:38

Eh? It wasn’t a neighbour and the OP had no idea where it had been delivered!

But the delivery company should have put a note through saying where it was. It’s not the neighbours fault

moderate · 27/04/2026 19:57

The poll response [is] amazing to me.

I wouldn’t be particularly annoyed with the neighbour

The poll was about whether she was reasonable to be annoyed with the neighbour.

It was an error on the part of the delivery company: they thought they'd delivered it to the correct address. The OP only discovered where it had been delivered to because the delivery person had posted a photo of it being delivered (which must be happening more and more since they all now take photos to prove the delivery was made).

Because they live 8 houses down from me.

The parcel was a small envelope that can fit through any letterbox. It had my full correct address on.

I’d have thought the neighbourly thing to do would be to quickly nip down and post it through my letter box.

It’s what I do. If I get posted a letter or something that fits through a letter box in error I will always take it round.

But then again this is Mumsnet where being nice to neighbours doesn’t exist.

To be fair, I would do the same as you and drop it down. Especially if it fitted through the person’s letterbox. But I wouldn’t necessarily expect other people to do the same for me because everyone has their own idea about the correct protocol. I do find it hilarious that some posters are saying that nobody has time to walk 8 doors and stuff a parcel through a letterbox. It would take a minute or two, provided you’re fit and able of course.

Imagine Royal Mail delivering my parcel 8 houses down from me. To then post a red slip through my letterbox which the parcel could have fit through 🤣

It doesn’t make sense.

What annoyed me is that I believe the neighbour should have looked at the name and address and then said to the courier “Oh this is the wrong house. They’re further down!” Or they could have just walked 20 seconds to my house to pop it in my letter box.

Just baffling.

Royal Mail are horrendous in my area. I’ve received another houses letters on 3 separate occasions. And I’ve always popped straight out to post it through the door.

This is the first time it’s happened where my post has gone elsewhere.

But yes this thread has opened my eyes that not everyone would do the same as I.

lesson learnt 🤣

Maybe the neighbour was in the middle of something in their own life and found the delivery person interrupted them, and didn't look?
Why do you think your item is of any importance to anyone else? This is between you and the delivery company.

I don’t look at the name and address of a parcel until after it’s been delivered, especially if I’m in the middle of something by when the postie knocks.

What’s baffling is why you think this neighbour’s life should revolve around you.

Yes. I agree with you.

PigletJohn · 27/04/2026 20:08

Your complaint is with the delivery company.

ChampagneLassie · 27/04/2026 20:10

Well complain to the courier company! Honestly, your neighbours did you a favour, they’re not at your beck and call, why on earth should it be their responsibility to deliver your package to you?

CharlieEffie · 27/04/2026 20:11

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 18:55

I had no idea where it was!

I was left no slip. No text message. Nothing.

I had to search up and down the street looking at peoples driveways that matched the photo on the tracking details.

But thats not their fault, how were they to know

Vaxtable · 27/04/2026 20:14

I don’t deliver if I take in parcels. I ask if they have dropped a card or notification to the people then they come and collect.

I go and collect when I am notified

i am not a postman

Slightyamusedandsilly · 27/04/2026 20:15

If you want to collect your parcel, go to the house it was left at. If you don't know which house, contact the delivery company. If Evri, accept it's gone and report it missing.

It isn't for the person taking a parcel in for you to deliver it / chase you down. I'd ONLY go out of my way for my direct neighbour. Anyone else needs to collect. I'm not a paid delivery service.

dannyufcfan · 27/04/2026 20:17

Keeping it for 30 hours is not out of order or weird. They probably thought you had a card to tell you.

They probably would have given it to you in the next few days.

Miyagi99 · 27/04/2026 20:18

I’d be apologising that my parcel was delivered to their house!

Why would they assume that it was misdelivered instead of delivered to them because you were unavailable

Hoardasurass · 27/04/2026 20:20

Because the parcel fits through a letterbox.

It didn’t require a signature.

There was absolutely no reason or logic why it needed to be delivered 8 houses down.

Upsetbetty · 27/04/2026 20:24

If it had been my mums house for example she would have been at work on Saturday through til Sunday morning (yes a full 24hours!) and then home for 6 hours and back into work. Not everyone is sitting around on the weekend!

People don’t give things like this that much thought, tbh. I’d have assumed you were unavailable, had a slip and would be along to pick it up at some point.
