AIBU to think it was rude they kept my misdelivered parcel?

Was expecting a parcel on Saturday. (Was a small package, in a padded envelope so could easily fit through letterbox, no signature required)

Didn’t get delivered. So I checked the tracking details online Sunday evening. Tracking details said it had been delivered at 09:30am Saturday. It had a photo of the delivery person handing it over. All you can see in the photo is the package, someone’s shoes and their driveway. Which had a particular unique pattern of paving.

It wasn’t my shoes, or my driveway.

I walked up and down my street trying the find the driveway. Found it. About 8 houses down.

Knocked on the door and luckily they answered. I said “Oh I’m just wondering if you have a parcel for number 60 please”. They said yes, and gave it me. No “sorry I was going to bring it round/post it through your letter box”.

I understand people are busy but they had my parcel for 30+ hours. I would have had no idea they had it unless I went out looking at everyone’s driveways.

Was this rude of them?

Because if a delivery driver handed me a small envelope that fits through a letterbox - intended for a different house, 20 seconds down the road. I would simply walk 20 seconds down the road and post it through the letterbox of the correct house.

🤷🏼‍♀️

Really? If I accepted a tracked delivery for a neighbour I wouldn't put it through their letterbox. A misdirected letter maybe, but not a tracked delivery.

lornad00m · 27/04/2026 20:53

I imagine they assumed the courier would have left a card saying where they'd delivered the parcel to and that you would eventually collect it.

People have busy lives.

Surely with common sense you’d think if a courier can post a slip through my letterbox they can also post the actual enveloped package through my letterbox. It didn’t require a signature upon delivery.

Post a slip through my door but leve the envelope 8 houses down.

Can’t believe it’s just me that thinks this is crazy!

I didn’t get a notification.

I searched up the tracking number I received from the sender on Royal Mail tracking

It stated “delivered” and a photo of the parcel being passed over a random driveway and a pair of shoes.

If they didn’t have the drive way paving in the photo I would have had no idea where the parcel was.

I had to search up my street looking for the driveway which matched the photo on the tracking.

And this is your neighbour’s fault how?

But they didnt know if you were away or there was some reason you hadn't picked it up.
They may have been busy. They may have had some bad news to process. They may have simply forgotten. Maybe their cleaner took it in and they didnt realise.
So many possible scenarios. It's just not their fault you didnt get a slip

Aren’t you brilliant? How brilliant you are.

Upsetbetty · 27/04/2026 21:03

and again I ask….if it would only take 20 seconds…why did YOU take 30 hours!?

bevm72yellow · 27/04/2026 21:03

The attitude of expecting them to run around and look for your house and deliver it promptly asap would deter people from doing you a courtesy in future by looking after it and handing it over. Gratitude for their courteous behaviour can have positive future consequences on occasions.

It wasn’t my neighbours “fault”.

It was the fault of Royal Mail misdelivering.

But thought it was rude of the neighbour not to take 20 seconds out of their day and pop it through my letterbox.

It’s not just you. According to the poll results, 1 out of every 10 MNers are similarly self-entitled.

PansyPapers · 27/04/2026 21:08

Why so many angry posters?

Whatever posters’ opinions they are speaking so rudely/ disrespectfully to the OP.

But it's not 20 seconds for all?

I know in my very average sized house street it would take more than 20 seconds. Wrapping my child up/persuading them to put their shoes on etc. Maybe they were home alone with their child, can't exactly leave it home alone?

PansyPapers · 27/04/2026 21:09

MN is such an angry place.

So your problem should be with the courier. Who didn't leave a card. Or could have in fact fit the parcel through the letterbox. Unless he needed a photo of an open door to show proof of delivery.

Your issue shouldn't be with your neighbour.

Arlanymor · 27/04/2026 21:09

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 20:57

I mean I would have rather the Royal Mail driver post it through my letter box.

But to answer your question, yes. I would have much rather the random house 8 houses down refused the delivery. At least then the driver may have double checked the address and brought it round to me.

At least if it went back to the depot, it would be clear on the tracking details. Not a photo of a random driveway that I had to search for.

Hope you told them that when you collected it then? To refuse the next time?

winnieanddaisy · 27/04/2026 21:10

I think that the neighbour probably thought that the postman had put a card through your door saying where the parcel was.
With this in mind they probably thought that you would be along to collect your parcel soon . They wouldn’t know that he hadn’t put a card through door .

hopyou · 27/04/2026 21:10

Stop it now. You’re being ridiculous

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 27/04/2026 21:10

Am I the only one wondering what the hell everyone is on about with the neighbours "doing OP a favour"? It was an envelope that fits through a letterbox. If it's ended up 8 houses down the street, it's because the postie has made a mistake and delivered it to the wrong address - it's not a "will you take this parcel for your neighbour" job.

As for the AIBU - I sometimes accept a wodge of post from the postie or pick it up off the doormat, and then chuck it on the side without looking at it. A letter for a neighbour might not get noticed for days! I take it round when I can, because they obviously have no idea that I've got one of their letters. I wouldn't kill myself to get an envelope to another house if I was busy, and I wouldn't be apologising for the delivery guys mistake.

( And if I ever get another parcel for the neighbour who has the same first name as me, and lives in a house with the second digit of the number the same as mine, I might not bother... her other half was arsey when we tried to take her parcel round 😐)

Upsetbetty · 27/04/2026 21:03

Ah apologies Betty that I couldn’t get round to answering your first question.

I spent Saturday assuming the delivery was delayed. As it can be with Royal Mail. They’ve been shocking recently. Nothing out of the ordinary in my area.

Anyway, I was bored Sunday evening and thought I’d double check the tracking, perhaps it’s still in transit and will be delivered tomorrow (Monday).

That’s when I saw it had been deliver at 09:30am Saturday with just a photo of the postie handing it over a driveway that wasn’t mine. No house number.

Is MY explanation okay now? Or do you need a full play-by-play of my whole weekend?

No sorry. I am no one's delivery person. Come get your parcel 🤷‍♀️

pinkdelight · 27/04/2026 21:12

Can't believe you think anyone else thinks so much about an envelope they get delivered for someone else! They didn't have all these thoughts you're having. They took it in and put it aside for you to come and collect. Which you did. Why you find that so difficult to process is the only thing that's crazy!

I still can’t see why it’s your neighbour who has the problem tbh
if I was waiting on a package on Saturday I would have checked way before Sunday eve also…so now I think YABU for being so lax and then blaming your neighbour..

TeenLifeMum · 27/04/2026 21:16

nevernotmaybe · 27/04/2026 20:26

If you choose to take it in, this is you interrupting the delivery. The delivery has not been legally fulfilled unless the recipient specifically requested it be left somewhere else. So you aren't helping, and then demanding they fix what you didn't help.

If someone delivers to my door I assume the neighbour was out and I’m helping. I’m already inconvenienced once the onus is on the neighbour. Thankfully my neighbours are great.

we had a delivery and I had to track the parcel from the post photo - it’s annoying but it was my responsibility not the kind neighbour who took it in.

That’s on the courier

Surely it’s a bit strange to leave a card through the correct houses door, but then leave the envelope 8 houses down. An envelope that did not require a signature and can fit in the same letterbox that the card was posted through.

Yeah, okay everyone, guilty!!! Maybe it’s just me. Happy to be unreasonable here.
