AIBU to think it was rude they kept my misdelivered parcel?

Was expecting a parcel on Saturday. (Was a small package, in a padded envelope so could easily fit through letterbox, no signature required)

Didn’t get delivered. So I checked the tracking details online Sunday evening. Tracking details said it had been delivered at 09:30am Saturday. It had a photo of the delivery person handing it over. All you can see in the photo is the package, someone’s shoes and their driveway. Which had a particular unique pattern of paving.

It wasn’t my shoes, or my driveway.

I walked up and down my street trying the find the driveway. Found it. About 8 houses down.

Knocked on the door and luckily they answered. I said “Oh I’m just wondering if you have a parcel for number 60 please”. They said yes, and gave it me. No “sorry I was going to bring it round/post it through your letter box”.

I understand people are busy but they had my parcel for 30+ hours. I would have had no idea they had it unless I went out looking at everyone’s driveways.

Was this rude of them?

Your neighbours would have assumed that the delivery company had left you a card telling you the address where they had delivered the parcel. I would always go and collect my parcels if delivered to a neighbour. Your thread title implies that they have kept your parcel for themselves. I don't think your neighbours were rude at all.

Giraffeandthedog · 27/04/2026 19:37

Did you at least thank them OP?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 27/04/2026 19:38

They probably assumed you knew it was there and was waiting for you to collect it. I sometimes take things to a neighbour or they bring something of mine to me but in most cases it is the person whose parcel it is that comes to collect it. They have been nice to you, they took your parcel in. You should be annoyed at the delivery company for not telling you where it was, not the neighbour.

Friendlygingercat · 27/04/2026 19:38

So far as I am concerned if a neighbour agrees to accept your parcel its up to the intended recipient to go and claim it. I dont take in parcels for neighbours because I dont want randoms knocking at my door. The misdelivered package cited upthread was literally left outside my gate by the Evri driver and handed to me by the gardner. I did not notice it was not for me until after he had left. If any more mysterious parcels are left outside my gate they can stay there until someone claims them or they get nicked. Im not a delivery service.

TwelvePinkDolphins · 27/04/2026 19:38

This annoys me too OP. When I lived in a flat my parcels would often end up at various other blocks and more often than not I had to go looking. If it’s been misdelivered how on earth am I meant to know where it is!!?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/04/2026 19:40

As others have said, @FrostedCandyAngel, they probably thought the delivery driver had left a card telling you where the parcel was, and were waiting for you to come and collect it.

I don’t think either you or they were at fault, but the delivery driver should have left a card.

Annie834 · 27/04/2026 19:41

No, I feel I’ve done my neighbourly deed by accepting the parcel. It’s up to the neighbour to come and collect it.

Isabelle70 · 27/04/2026 19:41

Being 8 doors away I would have popped it through your letterbox or knocked on your door if it was too big. I don’t want to have someone else’s post in my house.
My neighbour 5 doors down has a similar house name to mine so post gets muddled, either of us just posts it in the right letter box or knocks.

Agreed. Busy life and definitely dont agree to take in anything. Would have no time to act as an ungrateful neighbour's delivery service for free and am amazed at her lack of insight.

The title also had me thinking the neighbour was using/eating/ reading her parcel

Snooks1971 · 27/04/2026 18:38

Eh? It wasn’t a neighbour and the OP had no idea where it had been delivered!

That’s between OP and the dodgy delivery company then.

StripyHorse · 27/04/2026 19:43

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 18:55

I had no idea where it was!

I was left no slip. No text message. Nothing.

I had to search up and down the street looking at peoples driveways that matched the photo on the tracking details.

The neighbours didn't know that though.

You don't know their routine- they may have been put most of the time themselves, or have been working. They may simply have forgotten about it.

If they are 8 houses down, they may not have known when you were in or not.

moderate · 27/04/2026 19:44

Snooks1971 · 27/04/2026 18:45

Ok! Not a NDN then! 8 houses down or up your road, over the road or on your side means checking with a lot of neighbours when you don’t know where it’s been delivered…being pedantic then that’s up to 32 houses (neighbours) to knock and check.

It’s not the neighbour’s fault that the delivery company didn’t leave precise details of which neighbour took it in.

igelkott2026 · 27/04/2026 19:44

Nopenott0day · 27/04/2026 18:37

The onus is on you to collect your parcel and thank your neighbour for keeping it safe.

This. I took in a parcel for my neighbour last week and 24 hours later they hadn't been round to collect it so I assumed they'd not had a card or email to say I had it and took it round. But the onus is very much on the recipient to go and get it in my view.

And somehow this is the fault of your neighbour rather than the delivery company?

How did you get to be this self-entitled?

Or in my case, 13 miles away 🤣

Op its on you to keep tabs on your parcels..thank youself lucky they took it or else it would have been returned to.sender

But they were not to know that!
I once had a parcel sitting for a week in my house. I got it, realised the address was wrong and contacted the delivery company. They promised to collect. A week later an aggrieved woman showed up on my doorstep with all sorts of accusations. Wish I tossed it in a bin to be honest. I am not a delivery person and, as far as I was concerned, I dealt with the matter by alerting the delivery company of their mistake.

sunflower85 · 27/04/2026 19:46

Have you really got this little going on in your life that you felt the need to make a Mumsnet postabout this?? Good God!

Namechangerage · 27/04/2026 19:47

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 19:00

Because they live 8 houses down from me.

The parcel was a small envelope that can fit through any letterbox. It had my full correct address on.

I’d have thought the neighbourly thing to do would be to quickly nip down and post it through my letter box.

It’s what I do. If I get posted a letter or something that fits through a letter box in error I will always take it round.

But then again this is Mumsnet where being nice to neighbours doesn’t exist.

But it’s quite usual to get deliveries for other people nowadays. So how were they to know you didn’t get a slip and didn’t know where it was?!

SylvanMoon · 27/04/2026 19:49

We live on a street with a name that's similar to 3 other streets nearby. We frequently get our deliveries misdelivered or occasionally get someone else's. We usually bring them round to the correct address, but once we were too busy and put the parcel to one side to deal with the next day. But life intervened, and it got forgotten, until about a month later. We could see that it was a fancy house number from Amazon, which, given the time that had elapsed had most likely been reported as not delivered and replaced or refunded. Embarrassed to have held onto it for so long, we were reluctant to show up with it. So we drove past the house and saw that indeed it had been replaced, so we binned it. You don't know what your neighbour's situation was and whether they had the time or capacity to bring you your parcel before you'd collected it.

It's been a day. You don't know what they have got going on in their lives to decide that they aren't nice to their neighbours.
Why do you want to think the worst of them?
