AIBU to think it was rude they kept my misdelivered parcel?

Was expecting a parcel on Saturday. (Was a small package, in a padded envelope so could easily fit through letterbox, no signature required)

Didn’t get delivered. So I checked the tracking details online Sunday evening. Tracking details said it had been delivered at 09:30am Saturday. It had a photo of the delivery person handing it over. All you can see in the photo is the package, someone’s shoes and their driveway. Which had a particular unique pattern of paving.

It wasn’t my shoes, or my driveway.

I walked up and down my street trying the find the driveway. Found it. About 8 houses down.

Knocked on the door and luckily they answered. I said “Oh I’m just wondering if you have a parcel for number 60 please”. They said yes, and gave it me. No “sorry I was going to bring it round/post it through your letter box”.

I understand people are busy but they had my parcel for 30+ hours. I would have had no idea they had it unless I went out looking at everyone’s driveways.

Was this rude of them?

I had no idea where it was!

I was left no slip. No text message. Nothing.

I had to search up and down the street looking at peoples driveways that matched the photo on the tracking details.

How would they know that though?!

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 27/04/2026 19:02

You say it fits through any letterbox, so why not yours ?
I'd complain to the delivery company.
I often take in parcels for neighbours, but I expect them to collect.

Ginnnny · 27/04/2026 19:03

Absolutely your responsibility to pick up a parcel delivered to a neighbour. Rude to expect them to bring it unless you’re pals

How is that the neighbours fault? They would have reasonably expected the courier had left you a card.

Because they live 8 houses down from me.

The parcel was a small envelope that can fit through any letterbox. It had my full correct address on.

I’d have thought the neighbourly thing to do would be to quickly nip down and post it through my letter box.

It’s what I do. If I get posted a letter or something that fits through a letter box in error I will always take it round.

But then again this is Mumsnet where being nice to neighbours doesn’t exist.

Its not a mumsnet issue, it’s your issue with your neighbour 8 doors down.

I don’t expect much of neighbours anymore and you shouldn’t either. They probably presumed you’d call for it, just be grateful they didn’t lie.

itsmeits · 27/04/2026 19:07

Only person I give parcels to is NDN as I see them most mornings.
The parcels live by the front door.
Anyone else I expect to collect. Not my issue if they didn't card you.

They also didn't keep it they gave it to you when asked. They just didn't try to redeliver.
Keeping was the neighbour at no 73 that told me they hadn't taken the delivery. Then her child was wearing the exact same coat I had ordered and never received!

I love the don't delivery to option with some delivery services 😂

Perhaps their lives are a little busier than yours.

Had you not picked it up within a few days they might have. Not that it's their responsibility, though.

YABVU.

Middlechild3 · 27/04/2026 19:15

Nope, they did YOU a favour taking the parcel in. Its up to YOU to get off your arse and collect it from them, not for them to bring it to you.

Nope. They’ve looked after your parcel for free. They did you a favour saying yes. They may well have been busy when they got the knock on the door from the delivery person. Did you give the company you bought from/the courier permission to post at a neighbour’s? If not them it’s them you should be annoyed with. If it was me who received the parcel I wouldn’t mind but would expect you to come and get it. I might get round to bringing it round in a few days otherwise, but wouldn’t be in a big hurry.

SapphireOpal · 27/04/2026 19:17

Snooks1971 · 27/04/2026 18:45

Ok! Not a NDN then! 8 houses down or up your road, over the road or on your side means checking with a lot of neighbours when you don’t know where it’s been delivered…being pedantic then that’s up to 32 houses (neighbours) to knock and check.

I would be 90 percent sure that the recipients assumed the courier had popped a card through OP's door.

30 hours is hardly ridiculous - it's the next day. I can well imagine things being so busy here with the kids that it would get to the next day before I noticed OP's car was back in the drive or whatever.

But then again this is Mumsnet where being nice to neighbours doesn’t exist.

Mumsnet is also the place where entitled people think other people should do stuff for them. 30 hours is laughable - it was a day late. These people have their lives to live too - if you don’t know them then you also don’t know their availability to drop what they are doing in their daily life to either enable or prohibit them from delivering a package to you.

You could be grateful they took it in for you - you’re not. You could be grateful they kept it safe for you - you’re not. You’re moaning about them and putting expectations on them which is really unfair. Choose the right people be cross at if receiving your parcel a little over a day later irks you so much.

Being neighbourly works both ways - gratitude to people who kept your parcel safe for you is one of those ways. They did you a favour you ingrate! When I picked it up I would have apologised for the inconvenience to them… did that even occur to you?!

Balloonhearts · 27/04/2026 19:19

They probably assumed the postie had left you a slip and you'd collect it when you were in. It's not their responsibility to deliver it. Complain to the post office.

But you found the house so where’s the issue? You had tracking information and a photo which helped you find the house.
It’s not up to the neighbour to fetch you your parcel it’s for you to collect. They didn’t know you’d not received a card.

Arlanymor · 27/04/2026 19:21

And also 30 hours is such a misnomer when you expected it on Saturday but couldn’t be arsed to check until Sunday night! I guess you were busy… like other people can be.

Friendlygingercat · 27/04/2026 19:28

Im mobility impaired and can only walk short distances. I had a misdelivered parcel for the other side of the estate and no way of getting it there or letting the owner know I had it. A relative visited me 3 days later and he kindly ofered to go somewhat out of his way and drop it off. The woman who opened the door was quite rude and did not give him a chane to explain. She berated him for not bringing it sooner. Eventually he was able to tell her the package had landed with his disabled aunt who had no way of deliverting it and that he was only visiting. When she did not apologise he told her "You are very ungrateful. My aunt is not a delivery service and nor am I. If this happens again I will throw it in the bin."

The trouble is, not all couriers put a card throng the door, and even when they do it may not be clear. I had a card saying my parcel was at number 6 - there are three number sixes on different roads!

LattePatty · 27/04/2026 19:30

Nopenott0day · 27/04/2026 18:37

The onus is on you to collect your parcel and thank your neighbour for keeping it safe.

This is my expectation too. If they hadn’t collected after a few days I’d start to think maybe they hadn’t been told where it was and go knock.

Nopenott0day · 27/04/2026 18:37

This. Whatever next.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/04/2026 19:33

The poll response and some of the replies are amazing to me.

Where I live there would be no question the receiver would get the parcel back to OP; they’d either drop it down or post on the neighbourhood WhatsApp group (large estate in Dublin).

However equally I wouldn’t be particularly annoyed with the neighbour but would definitely complain to the courier / delivery company.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/04/2026 19:35

IMO it’s the delivery service you should be having a go at, for delivering it to the wrong house when you say it could easily have been pushed through the letterbox at the right one.

Thehandinthecookiejar · 27/04/2026 19:36

Not really, no. It was the fault of the courier for not telling you where they left it.

I recently had to track down a parcel based on a photo of what looked like a shop. My main clue was a poster, just visible, on I could just make out the word sale in red letters
Turned out to be the opticians across the road.

They did the neighbourly thing by taking it in.
Its your job to collect it from them, its not their responsibility to deliver it to you. The fact that the shitty delivery driver didn't leave you a note is not your neighbours fault or problem. Take your anger and point it at the delivery driver not your neighbours or next time they might refuse to take your parcel and then you wont get it
