AIBU for leaving a cafe after my baby was sick?

Angrycafe · Yesterday 19:50

I was out with DD (2m) and DH earlier at a cafe. DH had to leave 5 minutes before I did with DD because he was running late to meet his friend to watch football.

As I was getting my belongings together, DD was sick everywhere, including on the floor. I was really flustered and quickly left, making sure the immediate area (the table) was clear but admittedly didn’t clean the floor.

A woman (staff) hurried out of the cafe after me and started ranting about a lack of respect and that I wouldn’t be welcome back. I just burst out into tears.

I wish in hindsight I had cleaned it, by I was flustered and in a mess. Am I terrible for doing this?

Basically the message you gave to the staff member by leaving it was you’re to important to clean it up but they are not.

Sonato · Yesterday 20:26

Yeah that's not acceptable OP.

Well done that staff member.

Thank you.

I told DH and said that I don’t think the staff member has been in that position before. He said that judging by the size of her he’s surprised she managed to catch up with me! That gave me some much needed light relief amongst the tears.

Ah, you're married to a man who fat-shames women.
And you thought his comment was amusing.

Charming.
Hmm

She spoke to you like that because you behaved badly.

This. I’m sure it was really stressful but to just leave it and rush out isn’t adult behaviour and I’m not at all surprised that the member of staff was angry and disgusted at you. Taking responsibility and behaving like an adult is to go back and face the consequences by apologising.

You and your husband really aren't coming out of this well at all. In fact, you both sound thoughtless and rude.

You both sound deeply unpleasant quite frankly.

You and your husband both sound awful.

he left you to watch football with a friend showing exactly where his priorities are.
you left a load of baby sick in a cafe and legged it because oooh stress.
you (quite rightly) got called out for it.
and the only thing that cheered you up was your husband making remarks about the cafe workers appearance.
and then you’re so tone deaf you come on mumsnet for what - faux sympathy?!

get a proper husband, some real friends and a mop.

This. OP, you and your husband seem well
matched (and awful).

Oh gosh, that’s really unkind. I hope you and your DH are not really like that OP.

Of course they are, otherwise he wouldn't have said it and she wouldn't have laughed.

She also wouldn't have repeated it here, like we're all going to find it hilarious too.

How much sick can a 2m old do? It's just milk surely. Try not to worry x

You'd be surprised. I had a reflux baby and honestly it was like something from the exorcist. The sheer distance a baby's projectile vomit can reach would surprise you. Happened to me in a cafe once too. Tried my best to clean it up but was also very flustered/sleep deprived/mortified and covered in vomit myself.
Actually owned a cafe at the time too and yes it used to piss me off when people left their kids food all over the floor and didn't even attempt to clean it up.
A baby is different though, can't exactly stop them vomiting and all can be forgiven in that situation, that staff member was rude, there was no need to come after you. Just forget about it, not worth stressing over.

I am wondering if the OP will find a reason to ask MN to delete this thread..........

it’s so rare stuff like that happens.

what’s worse is spilling drinks and not telling anyone that’s the dangerous stuff.

everyone’s being absolutely mean to the OP here. Think she was just on the receiving end of someone having a bad day :(

Of course its rare because most adults would inform the staff its really odd not to and just leave

cloudsinmycopy · Yesterday 20:30

That’s a really shitty joke your DH made about the woman’s size.

You left her to clean up puke, and then laughed at her being called fat. Lovely behaviour 👍

SwatTheTwit · Yesterday 20:30

The issue likely wasn’t the baby being sick and you leaving, the issue is that you didn’t even have the courtesy to let them know.

Withthe2Ls · Yesterday 20:30

I was ready to say it’s not ideal but 2 months pp your still finding your feet first public issues (with which there will be many with children) give you the benefit of the doubt but tbh fat shaming the worker your left to clean up your baby’s sick? Postpartum or not your just a nasty person

Maraudingmarauders · Yesterday 20:31

I used to run a cafe and I’d never have chased
after you. It’s frustrating when it happens, but especially with such a young baby I’d assume you were flustered and probably at the end of your tether - I’ll never forget a lady with a newborn who vomited everywhere and she just burst into tears. My Colleague held her baby whilst we made her a hot chocolate and another colleague cleared up, and another customer called her husband for her and gave her some wipes to freshen herself up with. It was a very touching scene.
I got far more annoyed with the half grapes littered everywhere by young kids (we didn’t sell grapes) left as trip hazards all over the floor for my team whilst carrying trays of hot drinks.

Honeypickle · Yesterday 20:31

I’m hoping this isn’t real. But if it is, as a cafe owner, you were completely in the wrong. Tell the staff about the mess you’ve made, offer to help clean up, and never ever think it’s acceptable to look down your nose or laugh at someone serving you purely because they happen to be larger than you.

Plus I'm assuming they name changed anyway just for the shits and giggles.

That is an utter cunt comment from your OH.
And you aren’t much better for laughing at it.

slashlover · Yesterday 20:32

My oldest was sick at a pool once (in the changing cubicles next to one of the pools) when I was pregnant, and I nearly threw up myself, so I do sympathise. I offered to clean it up once I'd got him dressed, but the staff said they had to for HS reasons, and wouldn't let me, so I would guess this would apply to any business? Because most of us wouldn't carry satisfactory sanitisers in our bags?

So you did tell someone and didn't just leave it for someone else to find?

Leaving the place covered in vomit was bad enough but to be taking the mick out of her weight because she dared called you out for it takes the biscuit. Cheek of you. Especially given there's not too many that are back being skinny minnies when the bairn is 2 months...

Usernamefuture · Yesterday 20:32

Blimey no one called her fat, she was a slightly ‘rotund’ lady that’s all!
